Anyone know of any reviews comparing these two ?

Thinking about weight when I am travelling. Will be carrying 30D + big lens for birds anyway, carrying another body and all those lenses is getting beyond a joke.

I handled both in the store the other day, and the G7 feels SO much more superior to it. Build quality wise.
The S3 is very plastic feeling and really not that much smaller than a SLR. Definately not as portable as the G7.

the S3 wont be all that portable compaired to the G7. also, since you are already carrying a telephoto, the extra reach on the S3 is a null point. G7 all the way.

the S3IS did look plastisky, and was too tiny to be mistaken for another touristy Full AUTO kodak/sony....

the g7 has that ol skool sexy black look...also looks more professional..hehe..(poser!)

any reviews image quality wise?

Yeah guys, that's all clear from the tech specs. So is their limited range of apertures, so I guess I'll be carrying my 10-22 <s>

I am looking for reviews with direct IQ comparisons - particularly high ISO performance but also IS performance.

I'd guess the G7 will be ahead as it is newer technology, but not so sure on high ISO performance.

Does anyone know of any reviews comparing these two ?

Cheers, Mike.

the s3 is a bit more point and shoot friendly, you get the better zoom, IS etc

the G7 is really a toned down slr/rangefinder. Sure it can be used in dummy modes, but it has a lot more advanced features

Mike,

GNMick posted just a week or so ago the exact info you are looking for, with images from both cameras at different ISOs, you can judge the differences there:
G7 vs S3 IS vs S80...... ISO comparison

Thanks Rafa,

Thought for a mo the G7 had the worst resolution at ISO 100 till I realized the focal lengths are significantly different.

Can anybody point me to any properly controlled reviews with direct comparison ?

Cheers, Mike.

I recently bought the S3 with ALL the extras (Wide and Tele Lens, Macro Lens, soft case, etc.) and I'm not pleased with the quality of the pics one bit. Way too grainy. Just ordered the G7 after extensive research on the net and the S3 is going back to Circuit City. Bought the S3 to replace a Sony DSC-H5 which also shot marginal pics. I think the whole ultra zoom concept really hurts these cameras as far as picture quality.
Hopefully the G7 will be the one to keep.

If you're getting too much "grain" (by which I take it you mean noise) and you're shooting in low light conditions, I suspect no compact is going to give you ideal results. The larger sensor of a DSLR means that the inherent signal to noise ratio is much better; the individual pixels are much larger, so more photons strike each one.

If I have to shoot in low light, I'll definitely be using my DSLR. Modern compacts are good, but they only get the results they do at high ISO with heavy in-camera noise reduction algorithms. My 20D produces what are often very acceptable results straight from the RAW file with no noise reduction at ISO 1600, and if I wish, I can use Noise Ninja on the results. No compact can manage that kind of performance.
