I am having problems with a new 400d, straight out of the box.

I am upgrading from a IXUS500 and currently I am very disappointed with the image quality.

Whenever I use any of the creative mode the camera reports Err99, with F > 5.0 or shutter speeds > 0.5 - <1/3 Sec.

I am using two lens from an old SLR about 10 years old. Sigma 70-210mm 1:4-5.6 and 35-80mm.

Please can someone help?

Older Sigma lenses don't function properly on newer Canon cameras. Canon never released the EOS/EF lens communication protocolds ao Sigma had to reverse-engineer them, and they weren't able to do a complete job, so the lenses can't stop down properly. Sigma may be able to re-chip these to function properly, but you'll need to ask them.

DSLR pictures typically haven't had all the in-camera sharpening, contrast boosting and saturation boosting that P&S cameras routinely give their pictures. Check the available parameters and you may find some that you'll be happier with. But most of us do some post-processing to control sharpening, contrast and saturation.

Hey thanks so much - I thought I had bought a dud. I guess I will just have to invest in a new lens. I quite like the look of the Tamron 28-300....Do you this will be a good pairing?

I was so dissappointed when I first got my 350D - after being used to a Fuji Finepix.

After learning the camera I went on to purchase the 30D (same image quality) and still love the both of them.

I'm sure the 400 will produce some fine images for you in a short time to come.

I'm not a big fan of the large range zoom lenses like the 28-300. It's hard to design a good zoom; when you try to get a long zoom range it gets even harder. Unless not changing lenses is really important to you, consider getting a couple of shorter range zooms. You will get better IQ and may even get better aperture and/or weight.
