So I've decided to get the G7 today. Does it matter what type of SD card I get for it?
Does the write speeds really matter with the G7? I can get regular Sandisk or Lexar 2GB cards for cheap.
Thanks

isn't the 32mb card that Canon include with the G7 sufficient? :P

i cannot say as I do not have the g7, but i know the origianally included G3 compact flash card (supplied by canon) makes playback VERY slow when used in my 350D. Ok, it is slowed down a LOT, but this fact does not justify/answer anything really in your question as several flaws:
1. different type of card (compact flash as opposed to SD)
2. no idea what the speed of the canon card is
3. different camera for testing..
there are not too many g7 users around here just now to ask, so I imagine you will be answering a lot of questions posed by others : ) great huh? :P

If you plan on using the continuous shooting feature at all, get High-Speed!
80X or more.
Also to note, I was using a standard card and the pictures were transfering ever so slowly to my pc. Then upgraded to the Sandisk Ultra II and speed improved dramatically with shots and tranfer speeds. Now that I got my G7, I also ordered a 4 GB Transcend 150X High Speed SD card and it is "stupid fast compared to the previous two!"
Also, refer to page 44 in the G7 Advanced Camera User Guide for more SD card info.
You can view the user manual on powershot.com

Set it to 6mp (M1) fine and then get a fast inexpensive card (for video mainly). Transcend or RiData are what I recommend. I have both and have taken tons of pictures on my 350D. I stay way from Lexar, but that's because I had a card that was not compatible. They did eventually fix it.
I recently got two RiData cards for weddings, and they are troopers.
