I have a G1 that I bought new a longtime ago. It has recently suffered the G1 death, ie...DC charge fuse problem. Cost these days to fix is $175.

Question is based on the current value of the camera and the "improvements" made in the last 4-6 years in digicam's which way would you go ??

Put the money toward another new camera or fix this one ??

TIA

For $175 you could get the A540 or a recent G5, G6. Just depends on your needs.

Does this fault simply stop you charging the battery in the camera? If so, can you not get an external battery charger for very few $? I remember having to charge my BP511 battery in the camera when I had a G2.

Or does it cause some other problem?

Yes, it effectively shuts down the whole camera....quote:

"It was a 3.15A surface mount fuse (little orange package) on the power reg/memory card PCB. "

Something to do with the DC/DC PCB circuit board. I think this was written about quite a bit in earlier forum threads.

A630 for $250? For $75 more than the repair you'd have a new camera with a warranty, 8MP, all the advances since your G1 was made. it has very good IQ according to the reviews. No RAW, though. I would not bother repairing a 6-year old digital camera - perhaps the week after you repair it, something else will fail (the swivel screen wiring, for example)
