A few weeks ago, out of the blue, my G6 decided it didn't feel like letting me set the AF frame manually in macro mode any more. This is a feature I use (used) a lot. What gives?

Check your settings, especially digital zoom:
However, the AF frame is fixed to center-point when an image is shot using the viewfinder with the LCD monitor off or when the digital zoom is used, even if you previously set the AF frame to the position you desire.
Check pg. 89 to 91 of the G6 user guide for more info.
Please also note that the AF frame can be moved on macro mode but NOT in supermacro mode

Thanks for your reply. Digital zoom is off, LCD monitor is on, and I was using macro, not super-macro.
Has anyone heard of this problem being caused by some mechanical-type failure perhaps, or some kind of electro-glitch? This macro + AF-frame combo is something I used very frequently, and it stopped being available apropos of nothing -- no change in any menu options.
Thanks for any suggestions.

It seems that you know your camera well; anyway, it is worth checking all the normal settings that may prevent you from using AF frame manual positioning.
Be sure that you are in P, Tv, Av or M modes. Those are the only four modes that allow AF frame positioning.
Be sure you are working in center-point AF (small AF frame) and are NOT using AiAF auto selection (large AF frame). Use the main Dial next to the shutter button to switch from one to the other. See pg.89 of the user guide.
Be sure you are NOT in manual focus.
I fear that if you can not set the frame after checking the settings above, either the SET button is not working or may be some software issue.
Good Luck
