I'm trying to convert my AVI to MPG using TMPGEnc but failed.
It says the file CANNOT be open or unsupported. I tried Ulead MovieFactory
before. It also said it couldn't open the AVI files created by S40.
I would appreciate if anybody can point me the right direction.

Before you can open them you MUST have the appropriate codec loaded on your machine - I use the codec for m-jpeg from Morgan Multimedia and can thoroughly recommend it...

Have a look at:

i do this all the time with the avi's i take with my s30 using the video impression software that came with it.
after downloading the file from your camera, open VI and click the get folder and select the avi. double click on it so it appears at the bottom and click play. it will open in the theater. click on the save icon. when you give it a name to save it as, click the file type drop down menu and choose .mpeg. when you click save you will get a pop up window saying ...processing xx%.... should be all set.

Thanks for posting the actual steps you took to convert .avi files to mpeg. Over the past few monthsI tried various suggestions recommended in this forum (getting additional codecs, etc), but was not successful. I have an S110, and Video Impression was also included with it. I had tried the software when I received the camera, but .avi conversion wasn't an obvious feature (to me), so I uninstalled it. Your step-by-step procedure piqued my interest, so I tried it again, and am now able to easily convert .avi's.

Thanks Again!

What format is the better of the two? Is there much difference ?

the only real difference i see is that .mpegs are smaller in file size than .avis....making them much easier to send via emails or post on web pages. a 30 second clip shot in the higher resolution with my s30 might be 7-8 MB in .avi form. when i convert it to .mpeg it's probably around 2 MB.

Hey, I've had a similar problem -- that is until I figured it out.

I used a program I downloaded off of download.com called AVI Compression Converter, and a second called TMPEGENC.

1. Opened AVI Compression Converter
2. As an input file I used my AVI from my PowerShot S30
3. Changed the video compression to 'DV Video Encoder'
4. Checked don't change audio compression
5. Chose an Output file
6. Clicked Go
++++++++++++++++++
7. Opened TMpegEnc
8. Put my newly encoded *.AVI in the video source
9. Tweaked the settings to my liking.
10 Encoded to MPEG

May seem like a hassle, but you can apply a bunch of different templates to it to maximize filesize, quality etc. I really don't mind doing it. If you find a few settings you like, just save them and open them in TMPEGENC and you don't have to reset it. Thought I'd give my two cents!

brandon,

just curious.

what do you end up after running your .avi file through the AVI Compression Converter software? What is the need for the TMpegEnc software? It seems like the TMpegEnc does the actual conversion from avi to mpeg. Does the AVI Converter just prepare the original avi to be run through TMpegEnc??

Yes, with out the AVI Compression Converter TMPEGENC will not open the *.avi file. I had to go through those hoops in order to get it to work. If you have any more questions feel free to email me. brandon@gobrandon.net

I would like to ask if anyone is having the same troubles I have with chirpping on the final Video CD ? I uncompress using VirtualDub or AVI compression convertor (VirtualDub is much faster) then convert using TMPGEnc. Any thoughts ?

The full size AVI sounds fine, the MPG a little tinny and the Video CD has annoying chirps, made with NERO by the way.

Thx,

MG

I also use VirtualDub to convert the files since it comes with a built-in m-jpeg decompressor. The original audio is mono PCM format. I usually convert the audio stream to 11025Hz from 11024Hz (Audio>Conversion...), and then I compress using mp3 (Audio>Compression...>MPEG Layer-3) using the LAME codec.
I'll then convert the video to DivX4 or something to preserve the quality but change the codec from m-jpeg. Nero should have no problem converting these files (Video:DivX, Audio:MP3) into MPG to use on VCDs or S-VCDs. I've never had any problems doing it this way.

First you have to change the setting to allow the audio to be processed: Audio>Full Processing Mode.

What tool are you using to convert to DivX4 ?

VirtualDub: Video>Compression>DivX (chose a version).
DivX has become a popular codec, and it produces better quality video than Sorenson (QuickTime) or Windows Media for its quality:filesize.

However, if I want full cross-platform viewability, then I'll use TMPGEnc since MPEG(1 or 2) can be viewed on anything.

I'm not certain that this will help you but this is what's i'm doing for certain video files.

First of all, regarding codecs, K-Lite has a mega pak of codecs in a bundled package to download and give you the option to what you'd like to install. This might help as it is a wide range of codecs to play and encode video files.
http://www.codecguide.com/ (K-Lite Mega Pack)

Secondly, I've converted videos in different formats, and always looking for smallest file size and still having good quality & compression and my result was using WMV format. It gives me good quality video to send to people and has a smaller file size than other formats.
