To my UK friends…

First of all, I think some of the greatest photos I’ve see have been produced in the UK. But, are most of the UK magazines fanboys of Nikon? I get Digital Camera (UK) and Outdoor Photography (UK) every 3 months when it hits the shelves. But What I don’t understand is that they have done about 1000 (sarcastic) reviews on the D80 and the Sony Alpha, but yet still don’t do any on the 400D. In this months issue (Autumn 2006) they did a one page review on the 400D but once again they did a 3 page review of the D80 and a 2 page review of the Sonly Alpha. Now they have reviewed these two camera systems more than once, but they are just making mention of the 400D which came out before the D80.
So I guess what I’m wondering are the Nikon and Sony DSLR’s dominating the UK?

It doesnt matter what dominates in what country/area, the important thing is that your happy on what you have and be proud on what you own, (werent you a nikon user before?) so what if they are the top of the line DSLR's or what whatnot... there is a saying that its in the heart and eye of the photographer what makes any photos fantastic.
have you visited nikonians lately? you should have seen what problems that there having on the D80.

I believe that Canon have the majority of the UK market, im a member of a local camera club 50 members, 75% of the digital slr users use a Canon! Not that im saying this is correct across the UK, Canon have a massive advertisement campaign all over UK, hardly see nikon and sony!

Anyone else know any more?

You can't make a judgement based on 2 publications, Canon are the market leader in the UK. Some of the other magazines have a slight Nikon bias, but nothing as strong as you've described. Mostly they're very fair, it doesn't help them to alienate the owners of any make of camera, they lose readers.

well fair or not fair, I'll still continue to buy them, the articles are well written and easy to understand, and the sections they have on PS is very well written compared to a lot of other magazines.

In the US I notice publication and merchant bias towards Noink as well..

Noink does actively campaign to have more coverage in a number of magazines, and I know there are incentives or "spiffs" for merchants to promote sales of Noink over other brands.

I have no knowledge of Sony doing the same, but as a newcomer it's certainly possible.

My Theory as why Canon does not?
Simple, .. they don't have to. They already win the market share race without having to resort to such tactics.

I have actually just read a comparison review where they put XTi/400d head to head with D80 - which IMO is unfair as they are not equivalent level cameras AT ALL - the XTi is entry level ,

Of course the Nikon came ahead due to its better specifications. what a surprise.

I think one reason mags here tend to discriminate against Canon is because Canon have set such a high bar for themselves, and also because a lot of the reviewers are old school photogs who grew up using nikon manual cameras.
