Visiting London - Advice Needed

Wife and I are visiting London next year at the end of May as part of a visit to some friends in Scotland.
It's been seven years since I was last in London and I didn't have to get a hotel last time. Needless to say I'm a bit overwhelmed with where to stay. lol

My question is, what is the best area to stay in as far as quality and price? I remember the subway being quite easy to use, so an out of the way location isn't off limits as long as it is near a subway line and not in a dodgy neighborhood.

Any suggestions would be helpful at this point. :)
