View Full Version : Do you think I saved this shot?

It was late in the day here, and I was trying to capture some color in the background sky while asking my son to hold still. The exposure was 1/2 second and there is a very slight blur from head movement which, at first, I thought ruined the picture.
But then I decided to work with it. The extreme DOF seemed to give the face a sense of motion, but the origional color picture didn't seem to complement the expression I was seeing. So I decided to bring out the blur to give the sense of of him having just turned his head by tilting the picture, cropping tighter and removing the color. My son was a bit tired of modeling by this time, so his expression of impatience here is real--which I liked.
So do you think I saved this shot, or is the facial blur still a distraction in the "fixed" vesion?

Not that I know anything about anything, I like how you cropped it and sharpened it up... I wish he had a diffrent expression though and maybe the horizon more horizontal :) hehe... but it is a good fix for a difficult situation :)

I do like the edit a lot better. In the first he gets a bit lost in all the scenery, in the edit he's clearly the focus. I would like to see it lightened up a bit.

IMO....you did a fine job with the edit although I'm not sure I like the "tilted" look.

I hope you dont mind... I looked at it in photoshop and I see things you could do with it but since you do not have editing ok I will respect that :)

I think you did a nice job on the edit! A few things i can notice too, but will leave to your imagination due to "Image Editing Off"...
Overall, i would say YES, you saved the shot!

I didn't realize I had image editing turned off. I turned it on so please feel free. Thanks for the advice!

Here is a very quick go at it, maybe lightening up the shot and bluring some of the background a tad...

I like the B&W version I think for what it is you did a good job at saving it. I'm usually not a fan of the tilt but I think it works with it well and it was a good choice to convert it.

I think either way you have a great moody expression. When book editors are looking for images to match chapters this could be a quite valuable image. Kids are so often photographed with grins and smiles that an actual mood is really quite rare in a good photo.
Either way please your self it is a strong image, good job.

I definitely like what you did with this one. Suffice it to say, the black and white, along with the tilt actually gives the picture more character.

The Photo Sharing section can be hit or miss. If you're serious about suggestions, etc. it would be better to post in the Critique Corner.
P.S. I like the conversion.
