Loving the shots. Does anyone use a CPL on this lens or is it really necessary? I'm looking into buying one and it gets more tempting with every picture I look at!

Dont use it, we dont need any less shutter speed :)

It's already an f/5.6 lens. Add a CPL and you get f/11 effectively. If you have a really bright day and a tripod, it might make sense in very harsh lighting to control the lighting. Also, with perfect conditions, a CPL can bring out some feather detail with bird photography.
For my part, I've never used one with this lens - the tradeoffs are just too steep.

After viewing the archives, the images of this lens seem to "pop" just a little bit more then those taken with the 300mm f/4 IS lens that I am also looking at. I also seem to see improved Bokeh in general. Does anyone have both of these lenses or experience with both who can tell me if this is true or not. This lens is really tempting me, but I am also considering the 300 because of its f/4 aperture and IS as well as closer range for Macro. Lens decisions are so hard...

I think you'll find that each lens has it's fans. The 300mm f4 IS L has a huge reputation and can have a 1.4x TC attached to bump up the focal length. Although this will degrade IQ somewhat and can't be compared to the clarity and sharpness that a native 400mm f5.6L can offer, it's still usefull if it's not a focal length that you intend using much. I used to have a Sigma 100-300mm f4, but it didn't really make enough of a focal jump from my 70-200/2.8 to warrant keeping it. The 400mm f5.6 is a super sharp lens but it's min focus distance is quite poor.
I prefer using it on a full frame to a 1.6 crop but the smalelr sensor is useful if you need more reach.

The 400/5.6 just got 100% better folks. Forget it being a little slow at 5.6, the 50D is going to change all that and add 1 1/2 stops at least with it's better higher ISO coverage. ;)

Well, I am one of the biggest big company skeptics, and I just got my 40D in January, but I like what I see very much. A 15.1Mp sensor and Digic4 processor will allow much tighter crops to keep up image quality, than ever before. This means, the 400/5.6 just became a 500. Also it is supposed to go to ISO 12,800. Even if it does a good job at ISO 800, that just doubles the value of f/5.6 IMO. But enough for now, there are a number of threads in the camera talk forum about it. I just wanted to mention, that as good as the lens is, what's behind it just got a lot better. :)

WOW foxbat! I've gotta ask - for the peregrine shot, is that a full frame, or did you crop it/use extension tubes? I'm trying to get a feel for just how small of a bird you can fill the frame with at 400mm and MFD with this lens.

I cropped it left and right to take it from the original landscape format to more of a portrait format. It's more or less at the lens MFD.

It depends on conditions and the person using it. There is no hard and fast rule for all. You should try it. Personally I get way more keepers with one, but that's me. I prefer a tripod.

Some great shots on the gulls!!...I got my 5D last fall, just before our weather went into the tank and all the critters left, or at least those that could:)! I had one brief afternoon with my 70-200 IS and shot a bunch of gulls, just playing with the new (to me) equipment. I got a few that were usable, but nothing like what you got with the 400! The gulls should be returning soon, and I can start practicing again!:D

Update:
Got it. Took some shots of some backyard birds today under an overcast and rainy sky and the shots are really nice. Can only imagine how it will perform in good light. Personally I think the non-IS lens will help sharpen my skills. I think this one is a keeper. Now I can use the 300 f4 without the extender.

According to Wikipedia it doesn't come that far north but you never know, Wikipedia isn't always totally accurate.
For comparison, here's a photograph of the male of the same species (1D Mark 2, 1/320s, f/5.6, ISO 200):

Are these shots handheld or did you use a tripod? I ask because I just got this lens but havn't gotten a chance to test it because of the rainy whether. I figured I could get some good handheld shots with the lens if I keep the shutter speeds up.
Thanks

I figured I could get some good handheld shots with the lens if I keep the shutter speeds up.They are all loosely tripod mounted. I had the tension on the ballhead lightly tightened so I could move it around easily. With good light and a steady hand you can do very well handheld with this lens though my own personal preference is always for the tripod.

Good light is what I am missing these days but springs ahead. I find myself partial to the monopod. I need to get a better tripod than what I have.

I really want this lens. I was thinking of getting the 100-400, but i think this and a 1.4x would be better, as I already have a 70-200.
I also need to cover the shorter focal lengths...no L down there below 70mm. Grr.
