The pictures - birds and others, are simply wonderful. But nobody mentioned that getting one's hands on this lens is tough. The local camera store does not list this one, but a 400 mm f/4 IS lens, for only $5,999.99.

Maybe that's why this thread was started so late. So where can I get some comparisons -- this (beautiful!) lens vs. a 200 mm and a 1.4 or 2 X tele-converter, or (gasp!) vs. a zoom good to 400 mm? I'm a newbie on this site.

A lot of the sloughs around the interior of Alaska still have ice, although we had about a week of warmer temperatures last week. Then this week the temperature has been dropping to below freezing during the night, and back up to around 60 during the day. Ducks often walk on the ice looking for open water pockets, as you can see on the photos above.

These photos were taken in Fairbanks, at Creamer's Field. There are lots of migratory birds in this field beginning in May, and places to park your car, as well as benches for sitting while photographing birds.

Yes, very much so. It doesn't weigh too much and is very popular as a lens for hand-held use.

Any decent monopod will do. I have a Manfrotto 679B which runs about $40 (or less used). The 400 f/5.6 will work for daylight sports just fine. Too slow for night sports.

It's very addicting. All the eagles in La Crosse are scattered up and down the river and you need a boat to see a nest. But we get a lot of them during the winter when the ice is frozen.

That was straight out about 12-13 ft away. I will show you some shots I did today( later just took them) with my 200mm f/2.8L and all 3 extension tubes 12,20,36 of a Golden Carpenter Bee. That makes a Macro. I was about 2 ft away from the bee. Mf of the 200mm f/2.8L is 4.5ft. You can get about 6ft away from the subject with the 400mm f/5.6L with all the tubes. The Dragonfly was a straight shot in a pond from MF....Rich .....Use a tripod-monopod, unless you can shoot 1/250-+ sec

Nice shots, though I think you should try your best to go or shoot at a time where the sun is behind you i.e. if you know you are going to be facing west to shoot the birds, go in the mornings (:

Oh, what's the bird in the first shot?

Thanks Mitch. How's it going with your new toy? I just got mine back last week for the AF recall. The MkIII, as you know, had some problems, but man it's a nice camera. I love the high ISO performance, especially since I got out early morings.

I still can't get over the Humming bird shots. They were beautiful. Do you go out to the field and get your shots? I finally got some Humming bird shots but at one the wildlife refuges near the bldg.

Take care.

I'm loving my MkIIN. The image quality is great and the AF is out of this world. I'll never sell this one. :)

I shoot my hummers from my desk. I have a feeder hung about 2 feet outside my window and have the screen off and the window raised when I shoot them. I have three females and one male using it and they are all pretty much tamed. They don't care if I click away and I always talk to them to get them use to me.

I change the sugar water out once a week and if it gets low, the male will buzz right in here and look at me, then go out again. He will keep doing that until I get up and change it. He has done that 3 times now, so I can only assume he knows where the food comes from. Is that wierd or what? :)

Yeah, when I had the 100-400 it was nice to maintain AF at f/8, although with that lens I wouldn't exactly call it "autofocus", it was more of an "assisted autofocus." I expect to have much better performance from this combo.

And finally some small birds, almost all of these will have been taken with the addition of a 12mm or 20mm extension tube to reduce the minimum focus distance.

Hi Foxbat, some brilliant images, I have been contemplating getting the 400 5.6 but hesitate due to the apeture. Do you find the minimum apeture of 5.6 very restrictive? I mean how would it perform on an overcast day on a 5D II camera?

I anticipate using this lens for sports action so I would need to keep the shutter reasonably high and I feel that in that scenario the 5.6 may let me down.

I would be interested to hear your views on this

Get a 400 f/2.8...or a f/4. Sports and a 5D Mk II already restrict you. That is why they have crop cameras. I have a 5D . I picked up the 50Dand the 400mm f/5.6L for Sports and Wildlife. Invest in a monopod...

I don't find the maximum aperture to be a problem because I am normally so close to the bird that f/5.6 is as small as I can go anyway and still get the bird all within the DOF.

Your needs are going to be different to mine and you would benefit from the improved speed that f/2.8 or even f/4 offers, not to mention the improved auto-focus accuracy of the former. Which sport are you intending to photograph and under what kind of lighting conditions?

I plan to use my 400 at day games (little league) along with the 300 f4 and 70-200. I don't think you will have any problems in daylight...night time or dawn probably...don't know much about the 5dII other than what I see on these forums. That 400 2.8 will set you back about 6-7 gs. Try the 400 5.6 for a measely $1100.

I plan to use it mostly for motorspprts but I don't need it exclusively for this alone. I agree that the 2.8 would be ideal however at this time it is way over my budget. I will go with the 5.6 if nothing else other than Its reach and versatility. One day I will own the 2.8

The birds weren't too cooperative this evening, very little activity except for this one little marsh wren who was singing his heart out.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/snwyatt/2009-07-24_19-34-05_SwanLake.jpg

There were a couple ducks around too, but nothing exciting happened. This shot is almost unbelievably sharp at 100%, and it's wide open too. I know people have raved about the sharpness of the 400 f/5.6, but I had no idea...

After the lake I went up to the top of a local "mountain" (more of a hill) to shoot the sunset.

This was my first landscape shot at 560mm!! Some of the banding in the shadows is due to JPEG artifacts, but there is definitely some in the original shot too -- I need to find a good way to get rid of it as it's very noticeable at any size larger than for web.

Anyway, I really like the 400L, it is crazy sharp and seems to keep that sharpness with the 1.4XTC, even wide open. AF is super fast and accurate, and with the TC AF is WAY better than my 100-400L could ever manage with a converter.

The lens itself is super light and feels really good in my hand. Most of those shots were with a tripod, but I handheld a few. I found I could get sharp shots consistently down to 1/200 of a second on the tripod, so there's room for improvement on my part, as I've rarely shot a telephoto on a tripod before, usually using a monopod or handholding. Should be fun to practice, I might go out tomorrow morning and look for herons on the tidal flats (wrong phase of the tide but I might get lucky...).

It was a total fluke, I was waiting for the marsh wren to come back to his perch when I heard a loud humming sound, looked around and saw the dragon fly hovering in mid air. He stayed there long enough for me to unmount my lens from the tripod, focus, and get the shot. About 3-4 seconds total in one spot, completely unmoving. I've never seen a dragonfly do that before.

The 400 5.6 is my "winter" lens, the one I can carry with me when I'm driving around CT and MA for work from October-February or March. Once New England starts coming back to life, I switch to the 300 F4L IS (with or without the 1.4x) for it's versatility. During winter, birds are the only thing around to shoot, so I don't need the close focusing of the 300.

The beautiful thing with the 400 5.6 on the 5D II is that I can switch to Shutter Priority in winter light, set the ISO on Auto, and dial in the shutter speed I want (tended to use 1/1250 to guarantee sharpness). The camera will generally pick f/5.6 or 6.3 (which is fine, given how sharp the lens is wide open), then adjust the ISO to maintain the shutter speed for as long as possible, then gradually give up shutter speed when it can't maintain it.

Even though the 50D might put more pixels on the subject, it's not as dramatic as you'd think - less than the effect of adding a 1.4x to the bare lens, and I find the flexibility to crop with the 5D II makes up for any shortfall in "reach", and I get the clean high ISOs that allow me to use the 400 5.6 as described above.

Both taken today with the Canon 1.4X TC and taped pins. Autofocus helped a bit with the Osprey. This was the first time trying with the taped pins. Not too bad.
