These are some of my works with a Canon 400D body and Canon 400mm f5.6L USM lens. I have shot all of them handheld. You can see more work on http://www.orkut.co.in/Main#Album.aspx?uid=16441314116928751961&aid=1238319797. Believe me this is an amazing lens and works pretty well even at low light conditions. I have not experienced a difference in sharpness between f5.6 and f8 also.

First L lens. Struggled with distance with moving targets a bit but I'll get the hang of it. Needed to be a bit further back.

You wont regret it. AT 5.6 it obviously likes its light but once its there then you wont believe how fast it can focus & how sharp it is wide open.

I don't think so, it was just the way he was sitting I think.

Me either. I also thought they would be much blacker...maybe it's the summer plumage I guess.

I've never been lucky to capture a decent crow shot of crows as they scare easily but this one posed for me while another rumage on the yard.

Hey Frizzle nice shots. I may take my 400 to the zoo next time to get some nice tight shots like those. Did you use the tripod for any of the shots? I like them alot. This gives me some ideas now.

The 400mm f/5.6L USM is a very nice lens. A pretty good bang for the money, I would say.

Juvenile swan? Maybe an albino woodpecker? :) :) (I don't really know much about birds). It was approximately 35 feet from the road, eating weeds from the only shallow water not frozen. It was not concerned whatsoever with me being so close (I stood about 50' away while taking photos).

This is a little bird that seldom stands still for me to take pictures of:

The last two are of the same hawk. I took them while moose hunting in Alaska (yes, I eat what I kill). The hawk became sort of a friend (maybe a curiosity?). Anyways, it would fly around the place i was standing on (a tall rocky knob), but one time it landed on a small tree at eye level. The sun was on my back while I shot around 14 times with the 40D on AI-Servo and burst mode. It stood there perhaps 35 feet away, staring at me while I talked to it and took pictures. Then it raised its tail, dropped some stinky, and flew away :) It would be very difficult for me to express what I felt as I looked at this beautiful bird. I could sense its wildness, strength, and confidence. It was completely unafraid.

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments. The hawk seemed quite large at close range. I would think that it was from ten to twelve inches tall (head to tail). It was impressive to say the least!

I find the EF 400mm f/5.6 USM (no IS) lens easy to use hand-held. I set my 40D's sharpness one notch past default, and don't use any software sharpening. The lens seems to be very sharp, and I really enjoy using it.

I wish :D

I believe that it was flying around looking for small birds and rodents being displaced as I walked around the place, or just being curious about what I was doing there. Hawks won't nest in this place because it's very close to a trail, the place is too low (easy for humans to reach by foot), and the trees are too small. I could see this and another hawk fighting with the ravens every now and then. Even the ravens would put a distance between them and this hawk.

I've mostly been using my 500mm f/4L IS and my 300mm f/2.8L IS over the past year or so. However, I took a short trip down to Orlando last week, and didn't want to drag the BIG glass, so I pulled out my trusty 400mm f/5.6L. As much as I love the 500 and the 300, you'll have to pry my 400 from my cold, dead hands. Here are a few (all hand-held) for you.

Got this gem recently and shot some test images that don't look so bad. Use it mounted on a 450D. Probably a 50D would have offered more flexibilities and produced better results. Am I right?

In fact EF 400mm f/5.6L USM is the best glass across the board for BIF. All other lenses are heavier thus inappropriate for BIF shots that are mostly handheld. It's autofocus is lightening fast and quiet. Furthermore, it is also wonderful (on tripods if needed) for sitting or swimming birds and animals in good light. No other lens possesses these dual capabilities. Absence of IS in this lens is not an issue at all. People use it for wildlife and birding in good light when shutter speeds have to be above 1/800 at least all the time. From that level onwards IS has no role to play rather it may create trouble for AF.

I'll be back with some captured images shortly. BTW, help needed re how to upload images. Thnx in advance.

Everyone is posting within the forum guide lines & rules.
1024 pixels at the longer side (maximum)
I use these threads a lot to check out possible new lenses as do lots of other people. It's difficult to check the quality of a lens if the users are posting small low res pictures.
Your shots above for instance are very sharp and it would be nice to see a little bit bigger version.
Exif data is available on most shots here (not all though)
Re Exif data - I use exif viewer for firefox. If you don't use firefox, just google exif viewer.

Suspect and worried, Canon might b in the process of replacing this legendary glass. If they do, probably it won't b the same. Perhaps with IS and f/4, it'll b heavier and costlier. It would b wise and convenient on everyone's part if they don't.

This lens has always been hard to get. If stock was an indication of when a lense is replaced this lens should have been replaced at least 10 times the past 5 years I have been here on POTN.

Hi Sanjeedbd
I think you can post up to 8 at a time.
Maximum height or width of 1024 pixels
At least that's the way I interpreted it.

You may embed **) maximum of eight (8) photos per thread. This means: you may embed up to 8 photos when you start a new thread. You may embed additional photos if requested, but only in a reply to other member's post. If photo size exceeds 1024x1024 box, you may not embed it: post a link (URL) to it instead.

Nice shots Randall.

Thanks Frizzle. Good to know that. Here’s one of mine. This variety is vanishing fast. Locally known as Holde Pakhi.

Hi Randall. Ur shots of American Kestrel with a grasshopper in its claws is simply breathtaking. Great job buddy.

Dear 400mm f/5.6L Users,

May I know what distance do u find appropriate from to get a clear shot of your subject with this lens? For me it seems to work well from approximately 25-60 meters in good light. I tried from 100+ meters; it didn't come what we call tack sharp. May I know your views please?

Thanks in advance.

Sanjeed

Thanks Michael. I am having tooooo much fum with my ef400. I think it has only been off my 50d 2 times since I got it. And as a big bonus getting a lot of excersize chasing these birds around LOL. PS I posted new set of the Kestrel in the bird forum, and getting ready to post up the Redtailed Falcon, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon.

ErnieT

I'm selling all these wonderful items, because i'd like to upgrade (if you could call it that) to a 7D and a 500mm F4L, and a 1.4Xtender :) That to me would be the ultimate birding setup! They really are amazing pieces of equipment tho!
