I have the G7 very high on my Christmas list.
I am wondering about a small flash for the camera.
I have been looking at the Cullmann 34 AF-C.

What do you guys think about this flash.
What is appealing is the size and that the head swivels up.

Thanks.

I have the G7 and have tried several flashes with it. I orginally bought the Metz 28AF-C for it as it was small and styled simular to the G7 retro look but it didn't expose correctly. Recently I went to my local Wolf camera store and tried 4 other flashes with the G7 and the ONLY ones that worked correctly were the Canon brand. I ended up buying the 220EX and it works fine. I've seen alot of peeps using the 430EX with the G7 but it seems too large for me.

I would suggest that you try any flash your interested in using with the G7 first and make sure its 100% compatible. It seems that some of the E-TTLII off brand flashes have compatiblity issues with the G7.

From the G7 advanced user guide pg. 144:

The camera’s auto exposure function will operate with a Canon Speedlite 220EX, 430EX or 580EX…

I am wondering why neither the 420EX nor the 550EX are listed there.

I have the G6, and i bought the 430 EX for it, and it works very well with it. I'm sure it would work even better on the G7. It is pretty large coming off the top of mine though, but i would rather have it look funny, over not illuminating my subject as well.

The 220EX looks nice and snug...perfect for the G7.

Researching the same exact thing for an hour now and I'm probably going for the 430EX for my G7 (which I'll be getting on Monday).
The zoom did it for me and, compatibility wise, looks like it will work flawlessly with the G7.
Comparing specs with the 580EX, very minor differences between the two.
430EX can now be set into manual flash mode (full power~1/64).
Size is a bit big but I'd rather take better pictures then worry if the flash is too big for the camera.

When I was considering the G7, I called both the Canon USA and Canon Germany. Both of them confirmed to me that the 420EX will work correctly. That's direct from Canon.

I have a 420Ex and it works fine with my G7. Doesn't handle great with that flash on there, but functions correctly.

I didn't want a hot-shoe mounted flash in order to reduce any red-eye problem and any balance problem. Consequently I bought the Canon HF-DC1 unit which is positioned to one side of the G7 using a supplied bracket. It is included in the G7 system chart.
Both are very small and light. No cables are needed as the flash fires as a slave to the on-board flash. Here's part of Canon's own press release: -

"The flash is a supplementary unit that operates wirelessly and increases the effective flash range up to approximately 30 feet. The HF-DC1 flash is supplied with a mounting bracket so it can be attached to the camera, but it can also be hand-held or mounted on a tripod or accessory light stand to adjust the lighting angle for pro-like quality results."

For UK users, here's a link: -

Obviously it isn't as powerful as the big guns but is perfect as a supplementary gun for a light travel camera.

Looks like finding a small flash that will tilt up and supports Ettl-II on the G7 is like looking for the Holy Grail (or the perfect gear bag).
Help Canon!!!!!
What is the difference between an Ettl flash and an Ettl-II flash?
What would I lose if I use an ETTL flash on the G7.

E-TTL versus E-TTL II has nothing to do with the flash. Which version of E-TTL you get depends only on the camera.
