I work at a Club Med Turkoise in the Turks & Caicos islands. I walk around all day taking shots of beach/pool volleyball, trapeze, photo shoots, sailing, baseball, pool aerobics, general mayhem etc. I need some part time help with my business but it's impossible to find on an island this small (Provo). The relationship I have with Club Med is very good and the business is stable.

I'm offering room and board plus a $100 a week per diem for anyone wanting to come and shoot with me for a couple hours a day. You can be here 2 weeks or a month if you choose. I can't actually say you're working, since a photographer's work permit is about $6000 per year. You get copyright on your shots, taking them with you when you leave if you so choose, but they go into our daily pool of shots. This is a good opportunity for an established shooter to have some time away from XXX and maybe find some inspiration. It's a great opportunity for someone new to photography to expand their knowledge and master metering, posing people, selling yourself etc.

As I mentioned before to another shooter, if things are right this could turn into a long term offer for the right sales motivated shooter.

All you pay is airfare. PM me if you want any details along with your website or portfolio.

PS: you get to use the resort's facilities at any time you choose. Sailing
Hobies, gym, kayaking, snorkeling, trapeze. 3 minute commute...

Although interested, I'm sure I'm not eligible, but I have a few questions anyway. What lenses/focal lengths are required? Multiple bodies a necessity? Other required equipment? Any other costs besides airfare/food?

PetKal

Hey compadre, I would be interested, just have to clear it with my wife.
Also, I require an oceanview room on the first floor with a balcony.

I think I did mention it to you, I used to be very big with Club Med Cancun and Playa Blanca. The old timers used to call me CC.....Crazy Canuck.
We'll be in touch, good luck.

PS.....what lenses do I bring along ?

cosworth
18th of November 2006 (Sat), 17:58
Food isn't a cost. I walk around with my 70-200 all day and whip out the 17-40 a lot. The 85mm 1.8 sees some use too.

I have bodies and lenses, you can use your gear if you want.

Why on earth would you not be eligible Ron? Parole officer bringing you down?

Ronald S. Jr.

I don't know..I'd absolutely love it. Mom says it's fine to leave (family business here). However, I've only the gear in my signature, which I don't know whether it's enough or not. I'd be completely psyched to go. I'd be able to stay a month, too. However long I'm needed. Ha..if I got to go, I'd just start laughing out loud. I've been on one vacation in my life. :p

Sorry compadre, my mom , sorry, my wife says I am not allowed. :o
I think she is jealous....she is concerned I'd be hit on big time....that club is one of the biggest singles joints in our hemosphere, right ?

I would love to go.. however my next relocation isn't for a year.. but, after Africa I may find myself at loose ends for awhile.. hmm.. wonder if your resort would like a pretty good bartender?.. next September/October I could be available for a month or more.. I do have plans to spend the summer after next working in Yellowstone but the winter isn't spoken for yet... What kind of complications come up working in the Bahamas?.. and what's the resort you work for?.. (google is my friend)..

I hope to god I'm at the head of the line for this. If someone shows better work, I suppose that's one thing, but I do have a bit of an advantage having no commitments or attachments here whatsoever. No family that needs me, no bills to pay, no house to have taken care of, etc. I'm liquid, baby.

Are you ready, boy ?
Typically 200-300 single women in their early to late 20's (mostly). Mostly good looking, not adverse to romance.
The food is generally good-to excellent and LIMITLESS.
(The free house wine stinks, Corona is free too..)
The partying goes on all night...all day....day after day till ya drop.

I am afraid that might proove to be too much speed for ya, all too suddenly, eh ?

Ronald S. Jr.

Well, I'm not looking for women, and I don't drink. I'd have a drink if it meant seriously insulting a good paying customer, but otherwise no. Never have, anyway. I'm not one to party, either, but again, I would. Too much speed? Man, I was built for speed. 8)

Seriously Jason I would love to have a chance like this especially when your only asking for a couple of hours a day to improve on a hobby I enjoy. I hope one of the members here take Jason up on this offer and we get to see some great shots.

You know that my compadre will want you to be shooting in waist deep water and surf......let us not even talk about icing sugar fine sand. Now, do remind me......do you belong to Skippy's school of " I need no stinkin protective filters, the hood does it all" ?;)

Ronald S. Jr.
18th of November 2006 (Sat), 21:52
I don't use filters around here...no need. Rest assured, my lenses will have filters on them while in the ocean. I don't mind standing in waist deep water a bit. Hell, I wouldn't mind shooting UNDERwater if I had a housing. I just wanna get this chance!

PetKal

How's your resistance to UV's ? Down there the sky tends to be really clear....I mean as clear as it can seldom get anywhere in NY State or Ontario. Boy, that sun burns, both direct and reflected.....gringos get boiled like lobsters all the time.

Ronald S. Jr.

OK, now i got you mentally prepared for the cocktail your gear will be more-or-less constantly in contact with:

* your own dripping/pouring sweat.
* sunscreen lotion
* powdery sharp sand
* fine salt water mist (normally invisible but always present by the water, even 50-100 ft away, depending on the surf action and the wind.
* direct salt water or chlorinated (the pool) water splashing
* sun (frying the enamel on your black gear, heating up their internals).

Yeah, "we need no stinkin filters, hoods will suffice".......(in the absence of real experience, forum talk is cheap.);)

If I was a better Photographer, I would take you up on the offer. I've got 3 weeks booked off in January, with no place to go. The GF wanted to go to Mexico for 2 or 3 weeks, so I booked it off, but she keeps changing jobs and doesn't have enough holiday time left, after booking a week off at Christmas to go see her parents. Probably just going to cancel the time and save it for summer. Maybe another trip to Paris next August for a couple weeks would be a good thing to do with the time. It's actually hard to use up 5 weeks holidays per year, plus a few weeks time in Lieu on top of it when you have no money ;-)

This is not a one time offer. Once Ron or KevC (whomever gets here first) leaves the door is open for anyone else.

I have a couple 1Ds bodies for you to use etc. I also will show you how to make a sweat/splash guard or your flash from a windsurfing skeg protector.

I'm th eone taking water risks so don't think coming here will kill your camera. The beach, trapeze and baseball are still pretty safe. :P

I am not looking for a seriously skilled photographer. Can you take sellable snashots and can you do basic portraits? Can you actually operate a camera and know what the buttons do? Can you talk to people, chat them up and let them know where they can come buy there shots on the compund (read: not shy)?

You walk around taking pictures of people, tell them to come buy them at the phot booth and you get to burn some calories, get a tan and live in the Turks and Caicos for a month or a couple weeks.

Who knows, like I said... if someone comes here and makes a really big impression - there may be a serious job offer.

how fun... I hope Ron jumps at the chance.. really good oppurtunity for him.. as for me the tropical climate is appealing not to mention wandering the beach taking photos.. and as crazy as this sounds I would like to get a restaurant gig and stay for awhile... How hard is it to find jobs/ accomodation down there??.. and where are you from originally? blah, blah... i'm moving somewhere next fall.. be it the Grand Canyon for the winter, or some new ski resort, or maybe back to San Diego... just time to narrow it down and determine what I would like to do.. But, i'm pretty much done being still and dependable... i'm going to play at being a gypsy for a few years...

Work permits are east to get here, and restaurant jobs are plentiful.

www.enews.tc

But, rent and power bills are crazy. That's if you can actually find a place. Your CDMA phone will not work here. GSM only.

No work permit required, you'd not be "working" oer se. I provide the housing at my house.

Remember, this isn't working FOR Club Med, it's working inside one.

True, most resorts work something out with contractors like us, but that's not the case here unfortunately. But my house is a lot nicer than the accomodation at Club Med.

Here's somethin I'm wondering about. Say we go around and take, for argument's sake, 100 pictures one day. What's the photo center like? How do people find out which picture is of them? Also, do you have any problems with model releases, or is it all just on public property so it doesn't matter?

KevC
20th of November 2006 (Mon), 15:36
I went on a cruise that had photographers shooting people on the cruise. No model releases anything. They could choose their photos from the cruise ship "photocentre" the next day. I'm sure Jason has it all figured out. I also recall him having a print station ON LOCATION set up.

Model releases? Ha. No such thing in this country. There are no laws regarding photography with the exception of pornography being illegal.

Elaborate? Well, you and KevC want to come first. I assume it will be Ron first the KevC, or whomever. This isn't a one time offer guys. You can BOTH come, just at the same time doesn't work.

We print onsite, we sell images on CD, DVD etc. We print up to 8.5x11 and if a customer wants more (never happened yet) we can go buy a i9900 or start or just outsource it to the island printer.

There is no camera store here, but fedex planes arrive daily.

Any more questions? I want everyone who comes to know what kind of fun they could have and what living here for a month entails.

We've got contact sheets up for them. They see teh event number and we show it to them on LCD screens hooked into the system. Then we can burn od print to their liking.

When I do a photo shoot, I shoot in RAW and process the images on my laptop. Most customers buy a CD of images. If they only want prints then mI move the files from the laptop to the photo system with a CF card. I keep the laptop seperate from the photo network.

I do have a wireless router so that if you are off or taking a break and want to surf nearby, you can log in without having to use the pay wifi system here. Bring your laptop if you've got it.

I bittorrent a lot of TV and movies, so we keep up with the outside world. There is a big screen TV about 30 feet from the photo center hooked to satellite.

In other words, you get deserted island feel, but still retain civilized comforts. There are a couple good bars down the street, a surf shop etc. It's not like you'll be staring at volleyballs yelling "Wilson!"

Ronald S. Jr.
20th of November 2006 (Mon), 17:27
So when are we actually talking about? Also, roughly how big is the island, and how long would it take to get to another one? Also also, what's the chances of the dreaded "tropical weather"?

Oh, and if you want an i9900, I'm selling mine.

I don't have a laptop. Is that a problem? How will I PP shots, or will you/someone be doing that? Do I use my CF's, or do I use yours? How about electricity- are the plugs normal, or will I need some type of converter?

Sure would be a lot easier to communicate with and I would think a phone call for final arrangements would be smarter.

My msn is jetjaguar5@hotmail.com

You probably will just shoot jpg, upload to the system, PP npot needed usually. We have lots of CF cards. Plugs are normal...it's easy to integrate here.

I mentioned this one to my wife.

I'll have to go for a month to get rid of the chill from the look I received:rolleyes:

I think I'll push to get laid off and take a few weeks:D

Yeah, right:rolleyes:

Sounds like a fun opportunity for anyone looking to visit a new place on the real cheap. Flights are up there in price, but spending a month with free room and board, and getting beer money for a couple hours on the beach doing something you like.:D

Sigh:)

Ronald S. Jr.
20th of November 2006 (Mon), 17:49
So I'd have to use a standard parameter (or picture style, should I use my 5D) that applies sharpening, contrast, saturation, etc. That's fine.

So again, when are we talking about? Also, if this should turn into a permanent or semi-permanent situation, I'd be looking forward to discussing what that would entail, but that will come when I get there.

Sadly I'm not in a position to be able to do this right at the moment (although maybe some time in the future...??) but for anyone who is thinking of doing this then I can highly recommend T&C. My brother lives there and I've visited a few times and can say from personal experience that it's a seriously fun place with some of the best beaches in the world.

And if you're into scuba then you're made as the diving is fantastic. Kite surfing is also getting pretty big out there (my bro does it a lot!) so if there's a decent wind then there will usually be a number of kiters zipping around....can be fun to photograph too if you've got a decent zoom (although zoom not always necessary as a lot of them will come in close to the shore at the first site of a camera.....they're all just a bunch of show-offs really!!!)

I'm already at the airport. Sorry, everybody.

Jason, perhaps you know me. Perhaps you've seen my work. It's not that good, but definitely snapshot quality.

My wife doesn't mind because I'm not even telling her. My kids don't care either.

Only my three dogs looked at me forlornly, as they know their water bowls will run dry without me.

Damn it, can't let the dogs go thirsty. Maybe next time.

Seriously, that is a great offer. It must be real tough ;) living down there. I'd love to give it a try, but a hundred bucks a week ain't much.

I worked once for three weeks in Bermuda. No picture taking, but raked in almost 20k. And my hotel bill was over 10k and fully paid for. That was a nice gig.

Then I guess with this weather, you're SOL.

Wow, I'd be down later this year(as I can't miss my final 2 quarters of school and my spring break is only 1 week), if you are still offering. So this is how KevC joined you. All makes sense now.

I know I'm probably late, but I could make it towards july? I'd have to know soon, as I know flights are cheaper the sooner you order them. Let me know.

This sounds like a job for someone with a lot more life experience than a 22 year old!
