Did you know the guy who invented the stuff just died a week or two ago?

Inventor of instant noodles dies at 96
TOKYO (AP) -- Momofuku Ando, the Japanese inventor of instant noodles - a dish that has sustained American college students for decades - has died. He was 96.
Nissin Food Products Co., the company Ando founded, said on its Web site that he died Friday after suffering a heart attack.
Born in Taiwan, Ando founded his company in 1948 from a humble family operation. Faced with food shortages in post-World War II Japan, Ando thought a quality, convenient noodle product would help feed the masses.
In 1958, his "Chicken Ramen" - the first instant noodle - was introduced after many trials. Following its success, the company added other products, such as the "Cup Noodle" in 1971.
"The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum" opened in 1999 in Ikeda City in western Japan commemorating his inventions.
Ando gave a speech at the company's New Year ceremony and enjoyed Chicken Ramen for lunch with Nissin employees on Thursday before falling ill, Japan's largest daily Yomiuri reported.
He is survived by his wife, Masako.

Technology workers tend to be younger like myself. In fact where I used to come from they say you do your best work at 18... this is very much an industry where age is a liability, not an asset. If I talk like I'm old.. that's because I AM considered old in my line. I know it is wierd.. but tech has a culture of its own. Read the news reports, our celebrated heroes are either the young and the cutting edge, or those who make fantastic millions. I am neither. I think Google's founders launched the company after they got out of college.

That's pretty sad. Nissin cup noodles are some of the very, very best in the industry. I have lived through my dorm days and sampled just about *EVERY* dang instant noodle available on the market... nothing beats their cup noodle, period.
In fact the other day I was wondering about the etymology of 'ramen'. I hear that, translated into Chinese, it is pronounced 'la mian', the first word meaning 'pull', and the second one meaning noodles. Which ties in with what I know about handcrafted 'pulled noodles', you should see it being prepared from the dough.. this is the real gourmet high end version, and it is a sight to behold and a world apart from the instant noodles.. well in all fairness, it is handcrafted. I've eaten that before and hopefully I'll eat a lot more when I get back to civilization.

Ah yes...new meaning to the term padded bra....and from what I hear...teen girls are about the most vicious critters on the face of the planet.
OMG girls are mean!! We pull a guys underwear over his head and have a good laugh,it's done. Girls have to inflict emotional trauma possibly resulting in years of therapy.

Does anyone know how the Chief's visit to Irvine went?
Mooooo.
It was a good day. First stop was the Canon Repair Facility. The fellow behind the counter took one look at a sample image I had printed, and said, "Shutter bounce."
I asked if that was serious, and he said (cleverly) that it all depends on what's causing it. Apparently Shutter Bounce is a symptom with any number of possible causes. Anyway, he said they will replace the shutter if necessary, although it wasn't clear they'd have to. It might just need a spot repair of some sort. Either way, it should be ready within a week, and the best news.....there will be no charge.
This was the first time I walked in and didn't get waited on right away. I actually had to take a number and cool my heels for a while, so I used the time to talk to a nice young fellow who'd brought his 5D in for a sensor-cleaning. He's getting ready to take a trip to Romania to visit a freind. He supports himself by doing wedding photography and some PJ work. Needless to say, I heavily pitched the forum. (I'm actually thinking of making up some business cards to give out when I spot someone with a Canon Camera.)
From there, we had lunch at the Claimjumper Restaurant with a mortgage broker we've been sending a lot of business to lately. She's a nice kid---fairly new in the trenches and a bit overwhelmed by it all, so we gave her a pep talk. I hope it did some good; she's a hard worker and has a bright future if she applies herself and doesn't get discouraged.
By no small coincidence, the Claimjumper is at the mall, so when we finished lunch, Lois led a banzai charge into the stores for a couple hours. Once she was satisfied that she'd done all the damage possible, we drove home. Even though we left at 3:00, rush hour was already beginning, so the trip from Costa Mesa to the desert took almost three hours.
I stopped at the Apple Store and picked up a copy of Parallels for my Mac. I'm going to try running Windows on it, and I've heard a lot of good things about doing it that way.
Now we are home. I won't be on much this evening because we have company coming tomorrow---sister and BIL from Texas.
Now you are all up to speed on my life.

I actually like shopping alone or with friends. I sometimes don't want to get someone else's opinion. It takes too long. When I shop, I usually know what I want and how to get it, but I also like to wander around and see what changes I can make. But internet shopping is a favorite pastime, I confess. Malls take too long.

Yeah? Well... MY camera was shipped in a lead lined box, that was then placed inside a concrete shell, that was then secured to a complete set of gimbals to ensure stability. All this was then placed on a pallet made of titanium, then placed in a armored car where it was guarded by members of SEAL team 6 until it reached my door.

Thanks. I wish you could have seen those kids tonight. Their timing was almost scary. The twins we have on the team are only sophomores, but you'd swear they were seniors from the way they play. One of them slam dunked the ball tonight. They have some other really cool moves, too. They'll run under the basket out of bounds and throw the ball up behind their backs with a little spin on it that puts it right in the hoop. All the kids are catching on to it and most of them did it tonight. The other team never knew what hit them. We put our freshmen and our JV team out on the floor after a while to give them more experience playing varsity level. And they're almost as good. I can see us going to state in a couple of years.

I haven't heard of Parallels before. How is it for Windows compatibility? It's amazingly good. It only works on Intel-based macs, and it's not Windows emulation. It's Windows actually running in what they call a Virtual Machine. It's almost as fast as running Windows natively on a dedicated PC. I really like it a lot better than Boot Camp which I'm running on my MacBook Pro. On that, I have to re-boot to swithc operating systems. With Parallels, it's there on the desktop in its own window. It is really very cool.

My kids used to burst balloons by putting them on the floor then bouncing on them, like a little hippety-hop. Now they don't really care about balloons, or they bat them around until something breaks, or they look for something sharp.

Good to know. It's almost time to get another machine around here (probably when CS3 comes out for real), and this time Mac be in the running. And something like this'll make it easier, as we have some programs that are PC only that we need to run.

No! NOOOO!!! You miss the point entirely. The idea is to run Windows within Mac OS X so you can get all those nifty viruses on your Mac. Why should Windows owners have all the fun?
The real reason for doing it is because we can. I already have four computers in my office as it is. 3 Macs (including the one that can run Windows), and a Wintel machine. I don't think this is doing much for my schyzophrenia.
