vet. and don't make fun of me five week old balls of fur all look the same.. She was black and brown and itty bitty.. My brother said the guys outside the grocery store said that she was a border collie mix. .. Vet said she was a beautiful Rottweiler puppy but, by then she was wearing a pink collar, was named Mollie and I was in 'puppy love' literally. So she stayed.

Me, make fun of you? Perish the thought!!

I will say, however, that having owned a Rott, your "Sweetness" meter just kicked down a half a notch! ;)

What? Even with my steel plate AND a tin foil hat?!

They just enhance the signal. That's all.

You have to go to a different frequency of foil to block these signals.

Or switch to lead.

Wow. A rott with a pink collar. That probably caused some deep emotional scarring for the dog...

That's EXACTLY what I'm saying. Trouble is, I KNOW she has a bird book. I'm not sure why she's (apparently) never opened it....

Perhaps she'll consider taking it with her on her next Red Tail outing!

Rotts are no meaner than any other dog...unless someone makes them that way...the only defective dog out there is the pit bull....every one of those should be rounded up, sterilized and then allowed to live out their existence in the confines of a large enclosure full of nothing but other sterile pit bulls.

Agreed 100% on all counts. It's the spiked collars that make the Rotts look mean (that and the ginormous fangs!)

Have you been to the Dog Pound lately? Almost every dog there is a Pit mix of some sort. It just makes me sick. It's the dog of choice for meth-heads.

I nearly got throttled by a pit bull once. The thing jumped up and was going for my throat. It happened so fast, my first reaction was to haul off and clobber the thing mid-jump in the head with my fist. Sounds like I'm a tough guy, but it was all instintive. The dog kinda fell in a dazed heap. The owner, who was too far away for this killing machine started to cuss me out because I hit his dog. I was too shaken to really do anything; in hindsight, I wish I had hit him, too.

And, yeah, those dogs have thick skulls... OW!

I don't think I believe that about pitbulls.. I think the problem with them comes with breeding and their owners.. they breed aggresive dogs with other aggresive dogs on purpose so the gentler calmer pitbulls out their are being bred out.. it's really sad and the folks who choose to own pitbulls are often less than stellar people.

I would have no trouble pulling the trigger on a pit bull...they just have no purpose...anyone that owns one should be required to post a minimum of a 5 million dollar bond...to cover any potential problems the thing is going to cause...if you can't come up with the bond...then the dog and the owner should both be euthanized....bet that would cut down on problems right quick.

The thing I've noticed about rotts is that their basic puppy mentality doesn't pair well with the 150 pound body. Someone needs to instruct those dogs that they passed the line of "lap dog" 135 pounds ago....

My sister is as big a dog person as I am...she was given a pit bull puppy....the dog was never mistreated...got nothing but love and attention...she came home from work one night...the dog greeted her at the door...tail wagging...and then with no warning leapt at her and went for her throat...she managed to knock the dog away and get back out the door...had to have the animal control people come get the dog out of the house...and put it down...plain and simple...there is no safe version of a pit bull....they are bred to kill...

yep. when she dislocated my shoulder I was sitting on a park bench.. she wandered behind me and gave her leash a jerk that was around my wrist if she hadn't been soo big she wouldn't have hurt me.. but, she never knew how big she was and her feelings were hurt when folks didn't treat her like a lap dog..

I prefer labs....but right now...my menagerie consists of a 70 pound female Lab/Rottie mix...rescued from a flood....a 50 pound male Chow/Terrier mix...rescued from a shelter that said he hated men...(I opened the door to his pen...he jumped in my arms and hasn't left my side ever since) and a 12 pound female Chihuahua also rescued from a shelter that was being closed for abusing animals...(she smelled so bad the day I got her...that I had to drive the 20 miles home from the shelter with the windows rolled down in zero degree weather...it took 3 baths to get the stench off her).

Sounds like our English Springer, though she wasn't as big as Desmond. Shammy would just wait until the slightest lap was formed, then attempt to be on it. Her son, Moose, was a very big Springer, and he was the same way, and got this sad dog face if for some reason he wasn't allowed "up".

This is an excellent book:

http://www.northwestnatureshop.com/department/Western_Nature_Books/Birds/475.html

They have lots of great books at Wild Birds. The Sibley's Guide is excellent. It depends if you want photos or drawings. The Willamette Valley book will give you photos. The Sibley's will give you drawings.

The nice thing about photos is that it's easy to see what they actually look like. The trouble is that you're seeing what that one bird looks like. Not all birds of the same species look alike.

The nice thing abou the drawings is that you get a composite drawing of all the characteristics of a typical bird.

I highly recommend one for your trips to WF. You can pick one up for less than $20.

Had a basset hound (Beauregard) that was the same way. when he was a puppy his favorite place was lying on my chest with his head tucked under my chin. full grow, still his favorite spot but his feet streched well down below my knees and sometimes I found it hard to breathe. he got heavier as he slept.
He'd sometimes just stand in a sunny spot in the LR and look at me pitifully til I laid down on the ground so he could snuggle and take his nap.

the only defective dog out there is the pit bull....

I've met two pit bulls who were both the most loving dogs imaginable. Of course, I only met them the one time. I didn't know them all their lives, so I can't say they never turned mean.

The two meanest dogs I ever knew was a german shepherd a neighbor owned when I was young (the damn thing attacked me once), and a pekingese mix that I adopted from the pound -- worst mistake I ever made.

I have a friend who owns two rotts. They're big, scary looking animals. And they behave like retrievers. "OOOOooo I'm soooo happy! I'm so happy! C'mere! C'mere, lemme slobber on you! Let's go PLAY! Get a stick, get a stick.... OOooo boy...."

My brother has a rott now and had one before this one. They were both that way. They're just 125-pound one-month-old puppies who just want to play.

Thanks. He'll be 12 in May.

I've had him since he was 5 weeks old. Got him from an add in the paper in Eugene. It was 102 degrees outside. The owner was a little less than "steller." The puppies (5 weeks old) were running loose! The mother was frantic. He started calling them and they came running from the neighbor's. They ran through the fence (that 4 inch wire kind). One of them got stuck. His little tummy was just too big to get through like his brothers and sisters did. You guessed. He came home with me that day. He was #1 out of 11! He's AKC registered.

Okay, here's my contribution.

I'm actually in the Apple Store in Reno. I just bought another laptop. The 17" MacBook Pro is just too cumbersome to use as a laptop IMHO. It's a great desktop substitute for use in the hotel, but I really wanted something smaller for everyday use (like at Starbuck's, etc). I bought one of the little 13" MacBooks. Now, I have to figure out how to sneak it into the room tonight.

Oh well. One problem at a time. First, I have to get it out to the car without being seen.

I remember a story once of a bunch of teachers that wanted to try the Dvorzak keyboard layout instead of the typical QWERTY. They just removed and replaced the keys in the new arrangement, but were strangely puzzled to find that this didn't work.

I tend to prefer a smaller laptop for travel. Btw, here's a useful suggestion - if you want a desktop replacement, get a Pelican case, install a huge LCD inside it, put full sized keyboard and mouse in it, all cabled to a dock or a USB hub. Then put your tiny laptop inside it. That way you can 'expand' it or just pull the laptop out and go small when you need it.

Macs do have a decent keyboard.. it's nice. It works on Windows systems too - the four-leaf-clover shaped key maps straight to the Windows key.

I know this is absolute blasphemy but has anybody run WinXP on the macbook? I need the compatibility for some of my Windows-specific apps.

BTW, on the MacPro, I'm running Windows, and I'm using Parallels. It is absolutely slick. You can even drag and drop between operating systems. Interesting. See my entire legacy workflow is tied to Windows, it always has been. You already know the story of my disastrous Mac Mini adventure.. the thing basically became tupperware. Actually not even as useful as tupperware. You couldn't store cheese in it and put it in the fridge, so I flogged it on Ebay and bought more glass with the proceeds.

I can't leave Windows behind because so much of my software is Windows-specific, but the small Macbook looks nice. I guess you could say that I am still curious about switching.

Boot Camp essentially restricts you to running ONLY Windows? Or can you dual boot - select whether you want to launch Windows or OSX at startup?

My current Dell D600 is a dual boot configuration, BSD UNIX or Windows at startup.

You cannot dual boot in Boot Camp. It's either/or. Parallels allows you to dual boot. In fact, if I understand it correctly, you can use it to boot a variety of operating systems....basically anything that will run on an Intel processor.

Thanks.. I did a little bit of checking. I should have made it clearer, but anyway, this is what I found:

Once you’ve completed Boot Camp, simply hold down the option key at startup to choose between Mac OS X and Windows. (That’s the “alt” key for you longtime Windows users.) After starting up, your Mac runs Windows completely natively. Simply restart to come back to Mac.

That's what I was after - I can choose between either at startup time. Parallels is nice though, it takes it one step further by allowing you to run Windows AND MacOS simultaneously.. I'm familiar with this kind of system (used to play with VMWare), but I probably don't need to go that far. I'm quite happy to pick which system and reboot as needed.

Very interesting.. Apple is headed in the right direction.. my philosophy is that it doesn't have to be an either-or decision. It used to be Linux/UNIX vs Windows in the circles where I moved, and I was considered the odd one who adopted both platforms.

Hehe I have seen the references. Now I want to see the real deal

Seriously -- NO YOU DON'T!!!

We are home. Well it RAINED!!! The lake was too low to get near enough to the shore to see the eagles, it was cold....but we all had fun visiting and spent 2 hours at Big Bubba's BBQ eating, drinking and making merry. So we had fun despite the weather.

Sounds like a good group. Too bad on the eagles, though.

Looking forward to seeing the shots.

We're back!! And we had a great time. It was absolutely beautiful over there today. Mid-fifties, slight breeze, mostly clear skies. We got some good shots, we'll post in a bit. We're still downloading and doing some PP before that. Something will be up before beddy-by-time.

While Maureen uploads her photos, I have a cute story.

Thre's a convention of big-game hunters here in the hotel. Apart from my attitude about killing for sport, they're a pretty friendly, apparently affluent bunch of folks.

We were eating dinner in the hotel's steak house tonight, and there was a group of these guys with their wives at the table next to us. They were fairly liquored-up, and it was easier hearing them than the conversation at our own table. At one point, I heard a comment about a $10,000 camera. I was curious. Then, one of them asked the waitress to take their picture with the $10,000 camera. She agreed and funbled around with the camera for a while and was have trouble figuring out why the zoom ring wasn't helping her focus the picture. She managed to snap off a shot, but it was clear she was out of her element.

I decided to offer my services. At first, the drunks at the table were concerned that I might just be another drunk, but I convinced them that I had some experience with cameras, and they needn't worry.

It turned out to be a 10D with a 17-40L on it. My shots turned out better than the waitresses, but there was a shadow from the lens (built-in flash).

Anyway, I just thought you'd like to know....those of you who still own a 10D, apparently the value has jumped by a factor of about twenty.

Cool! Where all did you go? Where'd you eat?

Remember, I lived in Newport for a long time, so I'm always interested in where other people go to shoot. DETAILS!

hehe.. I had a guy trying to convince me how expensive my camera was today.. I tried to explain that it's a moderately priced piece of kit but he wouldn't hear it.. and kept telling his daughter to stay out of my way... :o

Oh crap Boss! That was in Reno, right? That's the Safari Club or something like that 3 or 4 of my staff members are there!! I just heard about this yesterday when I beeped one of them on the Nextel and reached them in Reno. I'm sure these weren't my guys (only a 300D in the bunch), but the liquored up part could easily have been them! ;-)

Small world!
