It's okay, I don't have any tupperware either  (but I've got several red-ringers)....

I wish I could post more photos but it's a pain with this connection...when I get back home I've got some lovely sunset shots of the lighthouse. And some not so lovely shots of birds in flight...they look like UFO's...blobby things in the sky. I'm hoping to get some elk shots tomorrow too...

cool, NAisBest is here too...:)

Okay, but we'll all have to bring our 100-400's because for the life of me, I can't get ONE of anything in MOTION with that lens...so it'll be a perfect "the one that got away" lens. Although, it's really starting to bug me. (well anything small and fast that is...big things are just fine...). What do you think I'm doing wrong? I tried the exposure comp that Cat mention. I tried the fast shutter speed (I got better results with a chance capture using my 24-105 today)...the aiservo & panning...I've really no idea where I'm going wrong...

The only moving stuff I usually shoot are race cars or football players....both are rather more predictable in their movements than birdies are. They are also considerably larger than birds, so it makes it much easier to lock focus. Perhaps go to the park on a nice sunny day and try to catch a lock on a Frisbee?

The technical part is quite simple, but the hand-eye coordination required is legendary.

Technical: set AI Servo, ISO 400, center point AF, six AF point expansion on, wide open lens, usually Av for me, 3fps drive, and let's go to town and find a bird.

Challenge: you MUST keep the bird within the 5D's spot meter reticle (while primarily meant for spot meter, it incidentally happens to perfectly mark where the six AF points are) long enough for AI Servo to focus. Your window of time is probably measured in milliseconds before the silly birds change direction or go somewhere else, as they are very unpredictable. Half press to start focus, and start tracking the bird.

The problem is, if halfway, the bird flies out of your reticle, the camera will automatically lock onto everything in the BACKGROUND. Good luck in that case, because that's a focus miss and the camera will either need time to recover, or at worst, rack the lens back and forth searching for focus at a severe penalty of time. Then, bear in mind, you need to squeeze the shutter at just the right time. Human reaction times can be up to 100 msec, there are some that are going to miss.

AI Servo is a difficult beast to master. As Wool said it is easier with subjects that move in consistent patterns. Actually it is VERY EASY with subjects which move in consistent patterns, then you can let the multi-kilobuck$$ technology do its job. My metal birds all fly in predictable patterns and AF/AIS does just fine. Wild birds, or even captive birds performing, do not always do this.

Geez, the rash was on my ankle. True story, six months ago, I had a red rash on my left ankle, looked like a had an "L" leg! Naughty, naughty if anyone thought differently!!!! My oh my, no one here ever have a red rash? :)

You are right...Lightstream, I've got all the tools...but I'm SO failing in technique. But I'm going to press on until I get it right!

This is a good idea...I keep practicing on birds and 1 keeper out of the last say 300 shots, (and that was an accident) is not very encouraging...I did photo and airplane (jet I think) the other day....meant to post it for Lightstream (due to his fondness for the metal birds) but I forgot to do it before I left...

Thanks for thinking of me... :)

Technique... it's not easy. I have been playing with the gulls and I find the gulls occasionally like to fly into the wind for fun, almost as if they are fighting the wind. They hover, almost stationary, at times, and those are the easiest shots to get. Play with the gulls too.

I find it helpful to frame very loosely and crop later. Gives you a wider angle of view and more room for error when tracking. Don't play too much with the zoom, set and forget a particular focal length.

Metal birds are dead simple. Some of them fly so slow when coming in for landing you can use one-shot AF or even MF. Some of them are so predictable you can use MF tracking focus all the way (I did).

Did I ever tell you that you're better in the creative department? Some of your shots are genuinely eyecatching. I see photography less as art and more as a means to capture what is actually happening - a portrayal of reality, for those who can (and cannot) handle it. That seems to be the common theme amongst the photographic subjects I usually handle (events, products, landscapes etc.)

That's why I say you have more of the artistic and creative side. My bias towards the technical side shows in my work. Some don't like it. Tough luck for them; I am not asking them to anyway.

Besides the 'purists' are the ones screaming you have to shoot it on ghetto hardware like you are some suffering artist before it really becomes art. While they don't really bother me much, it almost seems my mere existence annoys them on two fronts; that I don't suffer for my art (I have done more than enough of that for my career over the last ten years.. some lessons we paid for in blood), secondly, more interestingly, I DON'T SEE IT AS ART http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif it just occured to me! It isn't. It's more "This is how events happened today, a duck flew past, a gull took a dump in midair" :D

I realized a long time ago that much of this stuff would eventually become formulaic, ie. I stick to a set formula. I am quite happy with that..

Art is in the eye of the beholder. Someone dreamed up the romantic notion that in order to be taken seriously as an artist, you had to suffer some unspeakable horrors and deprivation. Folks that suffer from that archaic delusion are just that...delusional. Suffering doesn't make you artistic...it makes you sour on life.

I think we all know that it is true that the camera doesn't make the picture...but, I defy anyone to take a photograph without one. ;) There is nothing wrong with owning quality gear...provided you have the know how to use it and it doesn't just collect dust on your shelf.

Definitely agreed on the sour part. Times are much better for me now but what I have seen will never go away.

No wish to sacrifice that much for something I do as a hobby though ;) and good point about the gear. All of it gets used in various frequencies depending on what I happen to be tackling at the moment. Stuff that is not used is quickly resold to recycle it into liquidity to buy stuff (sometimes even camera related) that I WILL use.

If not, just do it the way I do - get a shot glass, pour JB into the shot glass, pour shot glass into whatever glass is available containing ice, top with coke, throw straw in and drink it through straw.

I'm all out of coke....

BTW, just curious - what gear do you have? Not trying to justify my gearlist or make myself feel "good" about it (I just told someone yesterday not to worry about his 400D and 18-55 while carrying my 1D/70-200.. it's not an ego trip, it's just heavy), just curious.

I can make a mean sapphire and tonic and pop a beer with the best of them or ease a champagne cork so at least I can help with those. lol

Never had a red ringer but did have a gold ring til I sold some gear to buy the 30D and the tammy 28-75; also have a sigma 70-300 (not the fancy one), a sigma 500 flash (not super), macro ring flash, the kit lens, and a broken 300D (still shoots manual). Almost had extension tubes, but the guy I bought them from backed out after I sent him an instant payment. just waiting for his echeck to clear before I consider purchasing elsewhere. I should be able to talk myself out of it. ;) Equipment isn't a problem-- inspiration is.

oh and no tupperware. ;)

My bias toward the technical side puts money in the bank. People don't buy snapshots; they buy sharp, well-processed images. And that's what pays a good part of my bills these days.

I think we are willing to welcome all bartenders....as long as they bring the right stock with them!;)

I'm not into suffering. Give me a 2OD and L glass over a 30 year old film camera and manual focus lenses any day. I can shoot a sporting event with the former and not the latter.

tammy ofcourse.. it's my new friend.. and yeah, the composition was a little tricky I was on the second floor of the resort looking over.. next time I'll go down stairs....

I think you'd be happy with the 60mm, Claire. It's a good lens. I have the 100mm and love it. As for editing, I probably have well over a thousand images to edit this week and three more portrait shoots scheduled, which will add another 500-600 images. I think I need to hire someone to do all the PP. I'm not getting any sleep. :( And I have to do the website redesign, too.

Apologies accepted. It is always wrong to judge others and I do not do so in your case. I also feel that I have been possessed at times and feel a need to apologise, which I do wholeheartedly. I think I'll set up a couple hundred shots for batch processing in the raw converter and catch forty winks. :)

RAW does take time..

I realized the other day, converting my RAWs from the 1D, 200 frames x 5 seconds per frame on a decently fast new computer (2.8Ghz dual core for those who are interested), that adds up to 1K seconds, divide by 60, that's 16 minutes worth of napping.. that's quite a lot!

You brought up some good points earlier about well processed shots too, I fully agree.. I am not a commercial shooter, but the 'clients' are impressed. I recently did a shoot for free (training for me really), and let a few people have a sampling of the full size JPEGs. The comments coming back are very positive, I heard some of them remark that they've never been able to blow up shots this big and still have them be sharp. Ah.. that is the idea. 6x4" is extremely forgiving of all but my most severely botched shots, as I have found. No challenge there; gotta get 'em up to A4/letter size before I am happy, that is slightly smaller than 8x12".

It would be nice to sleep like normal folks but naps are about all I can manage, as you know. too bad I can't catch them during the week. . . unless you count falling asleep at my desk. not a good idea as students don't like drool spots on their homework. :D

same here. I used to keep a sleeping bag in my office for such times as I couldn't stay awake, or spent the night there working on projects.

Sounds like my arrangement a few years ago after a back injury. I miss that chair! Much better set up than a door for the desk and a dining chair I use now.

Bring back some to share!

Consider using the 135L on the 20D. The 1.6 crop and 5fps would be good for soccer. Have fun, and post a few when you return!
As I said, sports are not my strong point but here are 2 shots of our daughter, Danielle. I took a couple dozen decent shots so she will be happy with them.

No, I have a MacPro for my image processing. (MacBook Pro for travel). I bought the mini just for using in the recliner. Anything else just takes up too much space. I don't think it has enough horsepower to do anything too strenuous. In fact, I don't even have any software installed on it other than Mozilla.

I just use the batch processor on RSE and attend to other things as they process. Then for sports shots, I batch them again in Photoshop after processing, crop, and upload. For portraits, I do everything individually, as I make a great deal more money on those. I'm going to put together a proposal for the parents of senior for posters and framed 16x20 prints. I may offer a few other products, too, since I did fairly well this year on scrapbook pics and posters.

Yeah the Mini is pretty much a toy.. as my first Mac that I ever owned, it really wasn't very nice. Not a great experience for someone who tried to convert.. and didn't suceed..

Like you the only thing I can think of that's useful for it is as a web browser terminal. I'd deploy them at the office for hassle-free web application terminals, but Apple customer service ticked me off and made me wait six weeks for my Mac.. they need to learn that I may "only" appear to be an end user, but I influence and recommend decisions at work.. we went Windows XP.

What they need to do is stuff a TV tuner into it and various video inputs, or make a Firewire breakout box for those inputs, then it would make a very nifty little TV tuner/set-top box or DVD player.

Actually, I haven't found it completely hassle-free, even in my limited use of it. It's very slow connecting to the internet. I'm using a wireless network here at home(802.11g), and the Mini is really balky. My little HP toaster PC is considerably faster---almost instantaneous, so I don't know what the problem is. It has built-in Airport wireless, and it should be completely compatible. All my laptops are faster, including the Powerbook Pro.

Anyway, it looks good...guess you could say 'it's cute,' but aside from the novelty, it's not all that useful

It's nice for a small computer for applications, such as retail, point of sale, or other space-constrained places (office is one of them). Fortunately, I used wireline Ethernet, so no worries during my time other than being slow. Needed more RAM, definitely.. I had the 1.25Ghz/256MB/40GB configuration.
I guess it all comes down to which platform's faults you can live with.. nothing is perfect (not even those who like to claim it is). So far out of the whole lot I like UNIX systems the best, especially in terms of line of business reliability, but they are very mission-specific and are only good at certain things. Running Photoshop.. forgetit. Running open-source equivalent.. even more forgetit (I REALLY don't like it)'

A shot in the dark, but have you tried repositioning the Mini? Also, are there any 2.4Ghz devices (cordless phones) near it? Try turning off Bluetooth and using a wired keyboard as an experiment to see whether it works better. Bluetooth shares the same band as 11g, and while they should be able to safely interoperate with each other, should doesn't always translates to "will" :D

You're welcome, hope it works out for you.

Speaking of photography I came across a good shot in the newspaper. Actually, it wasn't all that "good" - it wasn't technically perfect. It wasn't 'art' either, it was raw in your face imagery of a protester smashing a police vehicle with a metal pole. I covered the same protest but did not witness the violence (was in a different place at that time).

For whatever reason, autofocus missed and locked onto the media folks standing behind the guy, but the shot was so dramatic with flying glass in the air at just the right moment. I can imagine the editor saying "screw the focus, run the image" - and it was a truly riveting shot. The image told the story.. it's what it's about.

I really enjoyed using the ST-E2 and off camera flash for this one. Onboard flash (350D) made the grains look flat, like brown powder, but off-camera flash really brings out the sparkle. Here's a crop:

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1471&g2_serialNumber=2

I was holding the 430EX underneath the camera while angling it to shoot straight into the foil pouch holding the coffee. A snoot* made of paper could have been useful but I liked the effect as-is, so I am leaving it as that.

* light modifier. Imagine wrapping a toilet roll around your flash to prevent the light from straying - that's what it does. I would wrap white paper around it in a roll.

in the middle of winter up here.. starting next month I believe there is a ranch a few miles away that lets you go on a wagon ride to their 'elk feeds' they have been supplying the wild elk with food for years and they always have tons of them on their range.. so, for like five bucks you can go, take a ride in an old fashioned wagon, looking at the view of back country that you're normally not allowed on and see perhaps dozens of elk at the same time.. Me-thinks if we end up with a girls weekend up here we should go..

I went to the store and felt the 60mm and the 100mm. The 100mm isn't as big as I thought it'd be. both felt nice. The Sigma 70mm won't get here until Dec and unfortunately it wasn't as cheap as the website said, they had priced it wrongly. lol So, the 60mm seems the cheapest option, so guess that'll be it. Now I need to either wish it for Xmas or ask my friend in stockholm to drop by the store there and get it for me cheaper...

I am personally wondering if I should go for the 100 macro.... just a thought, but one that has been brewing in my mind for a while. I would like to run a full frame compatible system. And I'm a leeeeeeettle bit tired of the 350D's balky AF.

PG's recommendation of the Tamron 90 macro is interesting, but I also wonder if this will be Bigma #2, ie. bought it, don't like it, sold it and ended up going Canon (when I should have gone all out for the first place). Gripes are the same, no USM/IF/FTM.

I just think the 100 macro is a more versatile lens. The 65 is only for EF-s...and really isn't meant for anything beyond macro work....the 100 is a great macro...compatible with all the cameras...plus it is a decent short tele too. For the small difference in price...the 100 justs seems like a better choice.

Thanks.. as always, I appreciate your insights. The 60 macro is a 96mm FOV equivalent, and so makes a nice telephoto on the EF-S platform, functionally equivalent to the 100mm on FF. Unfortunately, it is EF-S only, as you've said. Hacking the 60 lets me use it on the 1D, but that's not what I had in mind.. I was thinking 5D, really.
