I feel sick. I hope that when I need another digital as back-up, the price on that bad boy will be affordable.

Boy, that sure looks good to me, especially the 1.3X crop factor and the 8+ megapixels resolution. Is there any 'official' word on what the street price is going to be? If it comes in anywhere near $3,200, I will own one before the end of the year.

Now, if they'd only make it in silver.

CyberDyneSystems

Still nothing conclusive,.

I've heard everything from under $3,000.00 to $4,000.00 plus ++

It seems to me,. and this is just my own observation,. that if Canon wants to keep the 1Ds at $7K... then this camera will HAVE to be listed at about $4,500.00 or so... :(

But then again,. they may want to blow Nikon out of the Water and drop the 1Ds price at the same time

Too bad the exchange rate is the same as when I was in Japan in 1962.
Back then, one dollar equalled 360 yen.

A bunch of shops are kicking out the old 1D here in Japan. but they are STILL 470000Yen or so. I doubt if the 1D II willl be that cheap though... A brand new 10D costs 198000Yen here and that's what I paid :x

It is a beauty. But until they get rid of the 1.3x crop factor I won't be having wet dreams about it. I'll stick with my 10D for now. Am I the only one bothered by the lack of field of view (even with the 17-35L) relative to my good old 35mm?

I do miss field of view with my 10D. The 16-35 isn't quite so impressive (FOV-wise) with the 1.6 cropping factor. 1.3 is (obviously) better, though a full-frame sensor would be nice.

Like you, I will continuing with my 10D for the foreseeable future. :)

Hence Park are taking deposits rather than orders. :)

I always want shiny new things when they are first announced. In three months time I will have regained what little sense I have.

According to Park, the RRP in the UK will be £3499. If that is the case then the initial "street" price will be nearer £3000. I would be tempted at that price!

I'd be happy to get some more out from wide angle compared to 10D, and happy to have 1.3X so that I still would not have to buy and carry and pay 4000 USD for 300/2.8.

For me it is very important to have 100% viewfinder coverage, and that it has!

Now I'd like to know about its shutter noise in single shot mode....

Looks like a darn good upgrade from ill focusing D30/60/10D's. No scratch that, I am not going to bundle the New Mark II with those bodies. I believe it is a step above in all the right places. That is, if you were struggling to use your D60/10D's for a lot of sports in low lit situations...

I plan on buying one as soon as they let us normal folk at them. Whenever that is. Even at $4500 I have decided it is worth the dependability and speed for sports photography.

Don't go getting all wadded up if you are a fellow d30/60/10d owner, they are all fine cameras, but each is a little different, better or worse than the others. I believe that the 1DMK2 is more suitable for what I need. I am not putting down the 10d's....

Hey! My 10D cost 1/3 the price of the 1D-II!

I agree on the 1.3X,.. for my type of shooting, I think 1.3X will be perfect!

Yes it will be nice to get more out of my 17-40mm at the wide end,. but I will be very happy with retaining a little "crop factor" for my big lenses and wildlife. With 8 MP what I loose in "crop magnification" I can pic up with the extra resolution and do the cropping myself :)

AND,. better yet,. with a 1D AF system,. I can used a 1.4X with the 500m f/4.5 and retain full autofocus! It might even work with a 2X and some tape :) (1D will autofocus at f/8!!!!!)

At 8.5fps mounted behind a 500mm on a gimble mount tripod head... I will feel like a tailgunner blazing at Messerschmidts when snapping those "in flight" shots

My next big question, as cameras get bigger and badder, the lenses we thought were the stuff may not be anymore. Look at the 1DS and the lenses you can get away with on that one vs the 10D. The 1DS is notorious for showing flaws in cheap glass. I wonder what this one will do??? I am concerned about the Sigma 120-300mmF2.8 EX lens I have. You know???

typer77

Guys, I am new to the whole DSLR scene. I have had my 10D but haven't fully understand the camera and be able to control the camera.

Now what is the difference between the 1D-II and 1Ds? besides the resolution? Sorry if this is s dumb question but I would like to see why Canon puts out such cameras in the similar category.....

CyberDyneSystems
29th of January 2004 (Thu), 23:02
Not at all Typer,.

The 1D was introduced in early 2001 (?? I think?)

It was the best camera made for sprts and journalism for quite some time.

It had 4.5 MP sensor and 8FPS burst rate.

The body of the 1D series is superior to anything else Canon makes (or anybody else arguably) incorporating all the high speed AF etc. of the film version EOS 1V

More recently the 1Ds was introduced. It is the MegaPixel king with 11 Mega pixels.

Now 11 Megapixels is not the best choice for speed,. and indeed the 1Ds can shoot at only 3FPS but otherwise it shares a lot in common with the 1D

But it was NEVER intended to replace the 1D ,. it is used for decidedly different applications (but still a truly PRO camera)

Now the 1D Mkii is the direct replacement for the 1D,.. so the 1Ds still has a place and is still being made (the 1D is now discontinued)

...etc... :)

Did anyone else notice that the 1d MkII also supports EF-S lenses. Does this mean a new trend within Canon, that all new cameras will support this mount, and can us DRebel owners expect more EF-S lens?

This price is sooooooo way out of my league. I'll just ignore the MK-II talk until I get a millionaire. But anyway, a street-price of $4000+ will not happen for me this decade at least, so please post price-updates when the steal-prices are getting announced ;)

Oh yeah, here's a good deal. Buy one, insurance it for more than it's worth, trade it for my 10D, and report it stolen, collect cash. Voila, 1D MK-II + 10D as backup for you, and 1D MK-II for me, everybody's happy ;) (maybe except you when your insurance-company nails you ;))

The real quesiton is if Canon will support the EF-S line, or will it be a one lens wonder? If Canon fails to release another EF-S lens at PMA, that will be telling.

Releasing expensive telephotos that no one wants (donning flame suit) when the market is clearly yammering for cheap wide angles is strange. I am really expecting a 12-24 EF-S.

I personally would like to see a 24-70/4L, but I am not holding my breath.

My thinking was on the same line as Jim Larson, I was hoping for more EF-S lenses, so I was thinking if newer models (released since DRebel) supports the EF-S then there should be more EF-S lenses on the way.
