Nice shots mate! I was standing next to a guy with a 400 f/2.8L yesterday, I was jealous!

why ISO400?

Ok thats easy. In order to get the Entire A/C sharp you have to use lots of DOF. At infinity wide open you only have about 10 ft total DOF. I want all surfaces razor sharp.
As you may know with the scheimpflug rule you get approx 30% sharp in front of your point of focus and 70% after the POF. ISO 400 allows for a greater range of both shutter speeds and apertures when shooting moving objects too.

So lets say i am shooting a group of A/C and I want all the A/C sharp what f/stop do I use and where should the focus fall? I usually aim for the closest wing root.

In th two (poor) samples above the wing root has a nice shadow just in front, easy for the camera to grab. For the second the canopy was the target, not so easy, but doable. I you could see the 13x19's of both these images they are razor sharp.

Yes 400 creates more noise. Everything in photography is a trade off.

Thanks,

Les

ahh i see - not having shot autofocus with aircraft as my poor lens won't focus fast enough i've never had the problem with that..

Well I used the same technique with MF stuff too. But when you get larger glass you will see it's an issue.

BTW good shots of the Red Arrows, I saw them in Germany back in the 80's at Ramstein AFB.

take care
