Are you asking about extension tubes [measured in millimetres] or extenders/converters [measured in 'times' e.g x1.4 or x2]

Photolistic,
If you mean the 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverters then No it will not give you macro capabilities.
If you mean extension tubes (ex. the Kenko set of three 12-20-36mm tubes) then Yes you could achieve macro photos.
Extension tubes move the lens further away from the camera, which makes the subject larger on the sensor and the subject needs to be much closer to the lens. To achieve true 1:1 Life size macro with a 50mm lens you need 50mm of extension.

I was considering the Kenko extension tube set you mentioned and a reviewer said it doesn't work with the EF-50mm or the EF-S 17-85. Is this true? These are the two lenses I was gonna use them on.

I cannot see any reason why an extension tube would not work with any 50mm lens. The issue with EFS might be simply that the EFS lens has some very subtle physical difference that makes the camera side (the side that mates to the extension tube) incompatible with the basic EF mount. A mount mod and the 'grinding away' that some have done, is part of efforts to mount the 17-85 to APS-C format cameras that are not intended to be compatible with EFS (like the 10D). Some vendor extension tube can accept EFS lens, others cannot.

Well as popular as these two lenses are someone here must have tried this combination. Yes?

I understand the Kenko don't mount on the EF-S lenses, they will work fine with the EF lenses.

The Canon tubes will work with either and are better made.

I had accidental release problems with the Kenkos and switched to Canon but other people seem happy with Kenkos.

Lester, are you sure about that ?

It would be great if they did work with EF-S but all the literature I have seen says not.

According to the product description for the Canon EF 25 II extension tube on B&H, it is "fully compatible with Canon Digital EF-S lenses, as well as standard photo EF and TS-E lenses. "

The 50 will work , I use it a lot. Any EF-S lens will not work with the Kenko tubes. I also use my 70-200 quite a bit. These tubes are by far one of the best 'bang for the buck' photograhpy purchases I have made.

Yes they mount both.

I understand the Jessops brand also mount both, but that is hearsay so check the product description.

Yes the Canon tubes do cost a lot more, but when you have a £1000 lens drop into sand a few times you tend to decide its worth it. ;)

My Kenko extension tubes will not accept EF-S lenses, but the new ones may have been changed. I have been considering taking a file to the baffle in the tubes that keeps the EF-S from going in, but haven't given it a try yet.
