Ok so here is the dillema, I am covering an FA Cup replay next Tuesday. The ground, as it is the homeground for me has ok lighting, and as I am only covering the home team I would normally sit between the goal and the corner flag. As I said the lights are ok, but not being quite Conference quality it is normally hard to impossible work for a 70-200 ( I find anyway).

I have a 300 that will probably be a little better but isn't ideal for goal mouth action where I would normally sit, so my plan was to use an old 200, 1.8 lens that I have, but I am not sure where to go to get the best shots. Move nearer the corner flag and I will get reasonable goal mouth action (if there is any for the outclassed home team!!) or go to the half way line for a percentage of midfield action shots..................What would you guys do?

Really would appreciate your opinions

if its one sided then why not stay down where you think the action will be and then move at half time ?

are you able to sit on the sides o the pitch
if so then head for about 25/30 yards up the line
and you can get some decent stuff from there
not a usual position and some clubs restrict you to behind the goal
but worth a go
these images although all daylight were shot from that position
about 10 yards past the 18 yard line

Simillar problem but I know my answer.. I am doing Bury v Weymouth FA Cup replay on Tuesday and will take up around 16 yard line and stay for both halves ensuring different players from both sides and will get goalmouth action with 70-200

My 120-300 is now at Sigma in Japan for 6-8 weeks... ya dont know ya miss em till there not there :(

I echo the comments about the 16 yard line, tends to work for me too.

If you were in a situation of poor lighting, this would also give you good coverage of the centre of the pitch which tends to be lit a little better.

Kipax: Sorry to hear about the lens - hopefully it will be feeling better when it gets back. Do you get to claim the airmiles it will have accumulated?

Bugger... 18 yrd.. I was thinking 18 when I typed it :)

The 18yd line had three snappers on it last night so I moved behind the goals and preferred it with a 200. 18yd for 300 I would think on reflection..

Sitting on the side was definately the right thing to do and allowed me to at least get something in what was really poor light. If I can work out how to post more than one image these are some of the shots...
