Took this at an Arkansas Razorbacks basketball game last night. Looks like the 70-200 2.8 is pretty popular for this type event. BTW, I used a 70-200mm 2.8 to take this one too. :)

The young lady with the camera (second from left) seems a bit left-out though, obviously feeling inferior :-)

Depends what shot you want. Most BBall shots are close up action shots, full body shots, perfect for the 70-200.

That's probably more like it.
And I use primes instead of zooms to shoot at indoor venues. :)

wish it was more like a 50-200 or there abouts.. Excellent lens but that darn 70 on the short end still is too long for most of what i shoot...then the 200 on the long end never seems long enough when i need it either...lol Oh well, if I had the scratch, id dump my f4 for the f2.8 IS any day.. gotta love that IS coupled with the f2.8!!

I'm sorry..Well, maybe not. Unless you are taking money away from your family by purchasing this lens, it will be money well spent. I even get a kick out of those, "why aren't you down on the court with the rest of the pro's" look too. lol
Just so you'll know you made a good decision, I'll post some more shots from the game and the 70-200 in a different post. It will be under the sports section.

naw - nothing money related for the family - it just makes it easier to decide which credit card to use now!
... if I could tap out a few cards I might get to see more homecooked meals!
.... unlike my woodworking tools - the camera actually gets used! :p

WOOHOO! You goin' to the game tomorrow night? Lots of opportunities await you... I just wish you could manage to take a picture of the scoreboard at the end of the game with Arkansas winning. Guess you'll have to save that for PP in photoshop!
Maybe they'll pull it out sooner or later.

Nice lighting. At most of the places I shoot, I'd be at 1/250s or 1/320s using that lens. And that is at ISO 3200.

geez, now I want a 70-200 2.8 in my bag too. btw benandbobbi why are you up in the stands shooting from there? you get such a nice view from down on the court there. I love it. I also love how the guy second from the right is. just sitting w/o a camera enjoying the game from right there on the court. second best seat than to actually be in the game.

...snip... "why aren't you down on the court with the rest of the pro's" look too. lol ...snip...
When I first got my 2.8 I went out to practice at a local battle of the bands type show. One of the security guys gave me the nod to come over to him, when I did he opened the door to the newspaper photog area and let me in. So I went in and one of the shooters asked who I worked for, when I told him what my job was all I got a puzzled look. He looked at my camera and lens again and just laughed and said to enjoy the show and gave me some tips.
Moral of the story, unless your gonna be in the way(physically speaking) of someone earning their living, why not give it a go. Who knows, you just may end up becoming a paid photog out of it.

Hate it when that happens!!! Or when somethings been shipped, and days later it still hasn't left the state it started in. My MkIIn has been stuck in california since wendesday.
Anyway, 70-200 f/2.8, (probably not IS) is definately next on my list.

Well, I hope that's what is happening here. But when I go to their website and check my account info, that status is still listed as "In process".
If that's true I'll be extremely disappointed. My daughter has a gymnastics competition Tuesday evening, which is why I decided to go ahead and buy this lens now. I called Thursday to see if it was too late to have it shipped overnight. They said I missed the cutoff by 5 minutes. Since it always takes two days from NY to me I just ordered it with standard shipping, assuming that would get it to me by Tuesday anyway. If it really doesn't ship until Monday it will be too late. This is the second time they've done this to me.

throw me a 70-200 f2.8 and I can cover most of the indoor sporting events around campus... great range, great image quality, sharp and fast focus - it's a must-have for any sports photographer, IMO. I know I can't live without mine :)
it's also a great photojournalist lens, alongside a wide-angle or normal zoom.

That's interesting to know. That 300 2.8 just seems way too overwhelming...
I use my sigma 120-300 2.8. Although its a zoom, it is commonly paired up with my 70-200 2.8 IS.
If i had a 24-70 i'd play around with combos. Sometimes I use my 16-35 though. I like to vary my focal lengths, positions and everything.
Keep in mind, the pros that cover the big sports, using Canon deal with a 1.3 crop factor. The 300 2.8 IS has a field of view of 390mm. Then usually you see a 24-70 as their other lens on the other body. And then sometimes the 70-200 2.8(which can do cross court but not as tight).
Here's an example why long reach is good.
http://picasaweb.google.com/GregBurmann/WashingtonWizardsLosAngelesLakers/photo#5010906364548006082
I know this was not at 300mm, but this was on my 30D, not my 1DMKII(my 70-200 was on it). 30D(1.6x = 354mm). So nearly the same as what the 300 would be on the 1.3 crop factor. I should have been a little tighter though.
I need to edit more of my ucla bball photos, but just haven't had time.
But if you really got the funds like SI photographers, you will have like 8-10 bodies with you, all in use around the court.
Recently I met SI's John W. McDonough at the UCLA-Wash or UCLA-Wash St. game in late December.

Doggone, greg, those are some dandy shots on your picasaweb site. It almost looks like Jack Nicholas was putting up his middle finger at you for photographing him!
What great oppotunities you've had. I am impressed!

I think he saw me focusing at him from time to time in the game, as i was trying to get a good photo of him. I think he tried to make it tough on me. Or maybe i was imagining things.
I'm still learning, but i've made some of the right moves to get into some of the opportunities i've had. :)
I'll try to update my picasa album soon. I do have more stuff on my sportshooter from my portfolio.
