View Full Version : Red Arrows in Travel & Landscapes?

I took these two shots at the Airshow in Leuchars last September, but as the majority of the photos are sky, and as that is the main detail, I thought that I would post them here. ;) All that I've actually done is a levels adjustment and a little saturation increase.

The PP'ing you did here is just awesome, the colors and detail are stunning, much more impact than the originals.

Wow, John, those look terrific. The first one is a winner and should be printed. However, am I seeing a little extra noise due to the PP'ing, or is that from file size compression?

Thank you Brad, although I didn't do that much PP-ing, so I guess I just got lucky with my levels. ;)
Those look great! Nice timing!
Thanks ags. The timing wasn't really a problem as the planes were doing a display and (generally) making sweeping turns.
Very nice, especially the first one. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Mark. :)
Great PP work there.
Thanks Adam.

Thanks Jim. I've not noticed noise on the originals, but I dare say that the PP has enhanced things given the extremes between before and after.

Amazing PP! Great work, you've turned them from zeros to heroes instantly

You fooled me. When I first viewed these images I got the impression that the pp was minor. Now that you have posted the originals, I see that you have essentially created the images in pp. I don't have a problem with that. I'm impressed. Excellent job. I have tried photographing air shows. They are tough. The action takes place at a distance and it occurs very quickly. You have to anticipate.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Adam and Joe. All the congratulations must really go to Photoshop though as the colours appeared when I chose auto-levels, and I just tweaked that slightly afterwards. ;)

Thank you Miniflash and John. The coloured smoke is a common feature, and not something new, or at least not for the last several years. ;)

Quite a difference in the originals John. I would never have guessed the first two were products of the originals. Excellent work on PP.

Great shots John, the PP worked really well!!!!!! :)

Takes me back to when I was stationed there in the 70's. My outlaws still live there and don't know if you went anywhere near the church but it has the oldest (or one of the oldest) knaves in Scotland.

Beautiful old building.:)

Realy cool shots, well done on getting these. I'ts a long time since I have been to any airshows. At one time I used to get to see these for free as I served in the RAF for 7 years. :)

Thank you Rog. I didn't see the old church - and I'm assuming that you meant on the Leuchars base?

Thanks V. :) You would probably have gotten good access too an the ability to get better shots than wold be possible from the public areas.

Thank you 4mr4do4sho, and I'm glad that my photos have inspired you. These ones were luckily easy to achieve, and in any case, I've also got a lot more to learn about processing too.

John, the church is in the village and just along from the main entrance to Leuchars on the right as you go towards Dundee. It's up on small rise and the road in front runs eventually down to the beach.

Next time you go, go and have a look in.

Cheers

Very nice shots John...I really like the colors in both the shots:D ...But i feel that the yellow spot on the clouds above the planes in the 2nd one makes it look a bit odd...Would removing that in some way help? It is a question & not a comment - do tell me what do u think about it?

Moreover which lens out of ur arsenal, did u use for these shots?

Ta very much Chander! :D

I see what you mean about the yellow in the second shot, and yes, I think that the photo would be improved by removing it. What I liked about both of these when I played with the originals was that an automatic levels gave me these colours. I guess that since I got quite an impact so quickly, I never considered doing a little bit more to it.

The photos were taken at about 75-78mm with my trusty 70-200 lens.

Lovely piece of work, John.
Just goes to show that sometimes less is more when it comes to processing in PS..
Love it and I love that old church Raindancer mention.
It's a fine old building.
I took some shots of it a few years back. :?

I took these with my 70-200 lens where closer in-focus shots of planes are more of a challenge, but with these ones I was photographing a comparatively large area of the sky, so it was quite easy to do. ;)

Your editing on these is amazing. I have a few "meh" shots from a Blue Angels show several years ago, and now I'm feeling inspired to dig them out and play around in Photoshop. If your good shots can get so amazing, maybe my so-so shots can ramp up to decent.

Thank you dahlia, and welcome to the forums. I just got lucky with these ones, and the processing outcome was a nice surprise. Perhaps you'll also get lucky with yours too. :D

Thanks. :) A good photograph these days is now more than ever significantly due due to how the photographer chooses to process it, and how they see it in their mind's eye.

Thanks Dave, the processing made these shots for me, as the originals are certainly not memorable.
