@short5. Thank you for your comments and certainly you did not insult me. That, at least to me, is the reason we post here which is to say, to improve. I think I stated very clearly at the end of my post that I hope others would join the discussion. I do wish, however, that when people are critical they would at the same time offer helpful suggestions.
The light is clearly harsh. Accordingly, I also had hoped to open the discussion about using diffusers rather than reflector umbrellas. I just don't know how to do that, that is to get enough fire power through a diffuser when it is upwards of 70 feet to the horse. Looking forward to yours and other suggestions.
Good observation about the flashes being low (but not close to camera). The umbrellas were at the highest extension on 8' light stands. But they probably would be better higher. That's why I mentioned the guy that put them on the ceiling beams. That would be cool. But for those of us that shoot smaller shows every weekend I am not sure how practical (time and cost effective) that would be. The lights were far from camera, at least one was as far as it could get: the edge of the arena. Assuming a 125 foot wide arena I am guessing 60 feet to my left. This is my fill. The other as I stated is about 12 feet to my right. This is the main.
Probably your most poignant observation is the shadows and light fall off. When the horse stands in the middle it is easy to get the light ratios right for minimum shadows. But then the damn thing moves! As the horse moves laterally left to to the plane of the light the lighting ratio increases that way and, of course, the resultant shadow increases. And the converse is, of course, true. I thought about getting my wife and someone else to run parallel to the horse with the light stands but couldn't get that to fly:lol:
I look forward to your suggestions and others help me break into the business. I guess even after my 29 years in the business we are constantly breaking in. Unfortunately, my wife already did show some of these to customers at the show. And we only sold about $500 worth there. But cutters, as opposed to reiners and hunter/jumpers, for some reason tend to order very little at shows and more from my web site. I will report back how my sales are when I get them up on my server. My wife and I have established a somewhat soft rule that we no longer do a show with out a reasonable expectation of $2000 revenue, before expenses, per day per show.
This is important because right now my income comes fairly evenly from photography and judging horse shows. As I approach retirement I want less to come from the judging (too much travel) and more from photography. For that to happen (Continue to break into the business?) my product will have to continue to improve. That will hopefully happen with suggestions such as your and others.
Thanks again for your observations. I also look forward to my shots improving.:DIt sounds like you have a great market if you can take in that much per show. though I don't know what you have in overhead to pull that off. It would seem you could easily budget for a few more strobes as a one time expense. Set up is time consuming and has to be factored in as a cost but the results would seem to me to be worth it to get the lights either in the rafters or on the lighting posts. It is not hard just time. I should mention I commented on the shadows in your images and looking at it again I can see how you had very difficult conditions in those tight quarters with the walls right there and the various stuff they had around to cast shadows.
I would look in the sports and flash threads though. The basketball shooters deal with very similar conditions as far as moving targets and you see some fantastic stuff from remote strobes. The one thing that may be hard to get around is the close proximity of your subjects to the walls. In other sports venues that wall is usually bleachers that allows the light to fall off.

hey mr. matonanjin. do you find that a shutterspeed of 1/200 is sufficient for using flash on fast moving subjects? the reason i ask is because i'm in the market for an ocf or strobe setup and i'm trying to decide whether to go completely away from hotshoe flashes (i.e. alienbees) or to go for a 580ex II setup and be able to use hss when necessary. at this time the flash is mainly for portraiture, however, i can't help but think about that high speed capability that the 580 could give (in broad daylight or with fast moving subjects).
(and sorry, i haven't read the book yet, i'm next in line at the library!)
@rickdog,
Sorry, I'm dense, I'm not sure exactly what you are asking. Are you asking because I had a shutter speed of 1/200th on my cutting shots? I used that purely becuase that is the fastest my camera that I used for those will flash sync. But a single 580 will not provide enough light for indoor lighting like my cutting shots. A lot of guys are going to lights like Alienbees. I gang Sunpaks because they are powerful (GN 200@) and I'm lazy. I don't want to take my studio lights. Your 580 does have close to that GN btw so you could also gang those. You will probably end up with multiple ones for portraiture anyway!
Indoors the shutter speed is usually irrelevant because the ambient is so dark all you need to do is set it to sync speed and the flash duration is so short as to stop any action.
If, on the other hand, you are talking OCF and HSS for portraiture and fill, the 580 would be great for that. I use a Metz 58 AF which is a 3rd party 580 clone. If you go to my website I think it is the 2nd or 3rd image on my opening slide show was done with HSS. It is the one of just the horse's head. It was a really bright day. I underexposed the ambient by 2 stops if I recall. I then used HSS for the fill. I think it was something like 1/1000th and F4, ISO 100. Not the owners of this mare but the owners of her sire used this in an advertising campaign.
I hope that I am answerring your question.
BTW, I am really dense. I don't understand the book reference?
Back to work!

matonanjin - See? I knew your info would be helpful to others. :)
re the white umbrellas - not shooting through but using to bounce. I've got some diffusers coming to place over the lights, so if I'm not getting enough light by bouncing, I'll change to the diffusers. I think I'll go to where the shows are held to see if I can try it out during a practice before the show.
Thinking about it, unless the lights are mounted on the ceiling (in my dreams) I see there's no way around getting the occassional shadow from the turn back. I know that shooting from the sides (I've had requests for side shots), that it's always a game of 'dodge the turn back riders'. I imagine it could be similar with lights on the side of the arena. .. I'll try both when I go shoot a practice.
Hey I like your idea of having someone mirror the horse with the lights. LMBO. Too bad your wife didn't agree. (hey.. we've all played 'the cow' at least once.. that's hard work!)
I know that you know that while we tend to nit-pick our image quality, it's not first and foremost in the rider's mind. .. Yes, it's important .. but they're looking for the action that shows what the horse can do.
I printed and showed the below shot to this trainer. (he's also a judge) I thought it was cool because the horse was turning so hard that the rider's heel was kicking up dirt. .. and you know what he did? He and another trainer started talking about the 'filly'. LOL A long winded way of saying that I don't think they're quite as concerned about the occassional shadow as we are.

Rickdog. .. I had similar concerns about being able to stop the action @ 1/200. .. I was afraid that I'd get ghost images from ambient light. .. but it didn't seem to be a problem. I did, however, attempt to shoot at the stop/pivot points of action. .. but that's not always possible. .. but I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't as much motion blur as I'd anticipated.

thanks Playm, i was beginning to think no one understood what i was talking about! and that's what i was thinking about when i saw matonanjins shots, all at pivot points. i don't shoot cutting at all, but i do run into indoor arenas for dressage and jumping, so i was wondering if i could freeze the action sufficiently at that speed (mainly for jumping). i'm beginning to wonder if it's not only shutter speed, but the speed of the flash burst that works to your advantage as well.
i'm thinking of going for an ab800 kit, which with stand and umbrella is cheaper that one 580ex II alone (cabled however). i'll save up for the vagabond and some transmitters later...

Hey Rikdog,
That what I was trying to say above but I obviously didn't explain it very well.:
"Indoors the shutter speed is usually irrelevant because the ambient is so dark all you need to do is set it to sync speed and the flash duration is so short as to stop any action"
You are absolutely correct. It is the short flash duration that stops the action. The shutter speed is irrelevant. Depending on what power you have a flash on it is going to be something like 1/3000 of a second I think.
Like Playm said, I was worried about some ambient light causing some movement in the cutting pictues above. But this arena was so dark I couldn't have shot available light if I wanted to. At ISO 3200 and 1/250 even F/2 wasn't fast enough. It was still about 3 stops underexposed!

Ah, nothing serious, just some scratched hair and skin. I put a bandage over it because the pasture he was in at the time was really muddy in some places and I didn't want a crust of mud over it for the first couple of days.

Nice photos Pommekitty. The first buckskin (non-color paint) sure is a beautiful stout little guy. .. Very nice! Both he and his dam are pretty headed. I really like the distance between the eyes on the mare. That last shot, diving into the hay, cracked me up. .. Cute shot. (I was going to ask about the leg too .. glad to hear it's minor)
Nice roan, Scott. They do some of the mounted shooting at an arena near here a few times per year.. though I've only gone over there once or twice to watch. It looks like a lot of fun. Of course, a few of my horses would prefer to be in the next county when anyone shoots.. argh .. I had a filly though, who would come dashing up to me when I'd start shooting ground squirrels in the pasture (they leave huge holes like prairie dogs). I could steady the .22 across her back. .. I should have sold her to someone who does mounted shooting. LOL ............. anyway... that's a really good shot of the shooter (is the balloon in the original shot?) Thanks for posting those.

Thank you Playm.
The mare is not his dam though, just my mother's mare. As a matter of fact, she's half his age (he likes them young  ) . She has just turned 5 and he's just turned 10. Time does seem to fly! I've know him for 5 years now.
And I often have to go hay picking in both their manes. They crack me up too when they do that, especially when the head comes out with hay all over the place!
Scott, love the roan too! It's not often that I get too see mounted shooting.

Scott, your covered arena shots look like some of the best lighting I've seen in a covered arena. Was that natural light? (lots of skylights?). Both shots of the mounted shooters are great!

Thanks so much for your comments! I will try adding some fill and see if that helps. It was raining and was getting dark, and I had been shooting some storm clouds. I turned around and saw him watching me and just snapped the picture...my shutter speed was WAY too slow, so it ended up a little blurry, but I still thought it was pretty cute!!!
We have nice lush pastures in the spring, but by August they are all dried up and brown!

Yes, they do play A LOT! On the weekend they each got turned out with one of my neighbour's haflingers after we rode. Her horses are both the same age as mine. My boys chased them around trying to get them to play for quite a while before they finally gave up. They are just goof balls.
On an unrelated horsey note: if you think that your electric fencer isn't giving off enough of a charge and you want to see how it is really working without the benefit of one of those little gadgets, just take off your rubber boots and then grab the wire.......

This is from Cutting Horse Association of Nebraska Futurity (CHAN) that I shot for 4 days September 24-27. I need to look but I think this is the horse that won it.
As always at an indoor horse show the light was unbelievably bad. I kept switching from high ISO available light to flash and back. I am busy putting proofs up for sale on my web site but here is one of the high ISO ones for your comments. This was at ISO 1600 and the fastest shutter speed I could muster with an F/2 lens was 1/500th. And I still had to push process a full stop:( Considering conditions I think maybe it turned out ok but my eyes are blurry from hours of PP!
Canon 1D MkII, 100 F/2, ISO 1600, 1/500th, F/2. Slight curves adjustment and then Imagenomic NoisewarePro for noise. Very slight sharpening in CS3.
http://www.fourwindsphotography.com/proofs/chan 09/_H1F2222-Edit.jpg
Had two nights in my own bed then shot the South Dakota futurity for 5 days! I will post 1 or 2 from there when I get to those.
Thanks for looking.

Ron.. I applaud you for sticking it out for the four day futurity in those conditions! It's not so much the stress (or annoyance?) of trying to find the best settings in those low light/high action conditions (speaking from my own frustrating experience with that! ugh!), but having to recover the images from a four day shoot! It takes me about three days to pp a ONE day cutting in good light! I'll just bet, like you said, you're going cross eyed!! ugh.
I noticed that in addition to the open side, they did have the lights on. .. probably not a whole lot of help, but hey, it beats a poke in the eye.
It was a great capture though. Good position/action on the horse AND the cow in the frame. I really like the sweeping mane on the horse. ... and that 1/500 sec gave it *just enough* blur to show good action.
The three cutting clubs that I'd been shooting went to a covered arena this year. .. so after trying two times, I pretty much quit shooting them. PP was twice the work.. and sales were less than half of the outdoor shots. .. so it wasn't worth it for me OR the customers. (the covered arena they used had 'shade screens' dropped all around.. and no indoor lights). ah well.
**************************

They did have the open doors which gave some good side lighting. And they did have the lights on but it was those stupid gas lamps with the constantly changing WB. This is what slows down my PP as much as anything. We need to get a thread started sometime, maybe in sports, about lighting these. Ambient vs. flash, etc. It has to be relevant to more than just horse shows. Maybe it's been discussed?
BTW, the following weekend the lighting was even worse!
Even at 1/500th do you think there is motion blur in this?

Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you get close pm me and I will give some pointers. PlayM is a good cutting horse shooter and I am sure he would help as well. I am also going to start a blog on equine sports shooting if I ever find time. I'll post when that happens.

If I get brave I'll shoot you an IM! I played a little at a few rodeos this summer but didn't have spectacular results, but then I've learned a ton since then.
Thanks!!!

Aw, Whippeticious, your girl looks so good! Aren't the older ones great? We've got an '85 model of an Arabian that we adore. Here is Felicia with our son and me and my hubby on either side of her. I didn't take the shot, but it is the most recent, and it was taken with a 40D, so it should count, right? :) She is so easygoing, yet still has plenty of spunk, and loves to round up and work our cattle. I'm hoping that she will live long enough to teach my little guy how to ride, as she is very good and gentle with beginners.

I agree.........however, my 86 model doesn't think he's an 86 model, and still thinks when I come out to ride we're gonna be chasing some cans. it breaks my heart, cause he LOVED his job. tough decision to retire him completely, but the "what if" list is just too high now.

DISCLAIMER: This was cross posted is sports.
Here are a few random shots from the South Dakota Cutting Horse Association Futurity.
All were shot with 1DMkII, 100 F/2 and on each side of arena I had two ganged Sunpaks (622&611) through shoot-through umbrella. All in 800-1200 ISO range.

Four winds~GREAT action shots as always, Love the DOF you get, but...that yeller' horse is way too pretty to be a cutter, it should be at my place learning to chase cans. LOL ;)

Thanks, HMDH3. What is sad is the yellow horse had the highest composite going into the finals. The finals were clean slate and they lost a cow in the finals:(
You never did get back to me. Are your cuttings coming up going to be outside or in?

I thought I typed my reply???? weird. maybe it was in my head? we just went live with our second business website so it's been a little all consuming since I'm the only computer savvy one of the bunch!
Well, my friends bro is in TX, we watched him yesterday via live streaming video. There are some local cuttings going on at the big indoor facility in our area coming up in December. the lighting is horrid! but we were going to try taking some pictures in his outdoor pen just working cows. he's got a great looking rustic (bark on wood) working pen that would really add some additional western-ness to the pictures. only thing is dependant on the weather. I'm in Colorado and well, we just never know how the weather is going to be....might make for some really rangy pictures!!!
See, I told you that yellow horse was too pretty to be a cuttin' horse! he was just trying to make a point that he'd rather be a rodeo horse! LOL. (I am a tad bias towards yellow horses since I have one myself....)

Here is Whiskey (left) and Roo.
