Well I need to return to London after 6 years away and wonder if anyone got any suggestions of places to start looking for a nice combo of easy access to Kings Cross area, good price (maybe up to around £1000 month give or take, more if exceptional but won't be there a huge amount), and for a modern place with good local facilities. I was previously in Highbury, Islington, Oval and Dalston and all but Oval would be OK, but need some fresh places to consider too.

Good luck with the move - London is not really my cup of tea though. Far too many people...good for street snapping though.

[Shudders with barely supressed claustrophobic flashbacks of rush-hour tubes...]

If Kings Cross is work, how far are you willing to commute?

Some nice places off the main line north....

Sure, I know ... I kinda like it and hate it too. I cope with it by not travelling too far if I can avoid it and sticking to regular local routine. I'd like to walk to the office or a short bus ride ideally. Then you avoid a lot of hassle.

Al, I think 15-20 minutes max. I used to work at Kentish Town and the basic facilities are there and prices cheaper, tho can be rough. There are also some newer build places there.

What kind of accomodation are you looking for, Dave? House, bedsit, flat?

We've got a bulletin board at work where people are offering out accomodation in London. not sure what you're after though.

Treble the money and stay in Chiswick, I grew up there it is a terrific part of West London

My son rents a house in Herne Hill, up and coming area in South London that is still reasonably priced.

We should really bump into each other in Brum b4 you go though.

London - eek!

I've stayed in London with its incessant 20x7 noise. I've travelled through London on many occasions on my journey from Wales to the continant and further. Personally I could not imagine living there permanantly. It's just so crowded, noisy and full of undesirables. I took my girlfriend (now my wife) to London for a couple of days before she flew back to the US. She was quite startled because we never actually saw a native Londoner. The hotel staff were all Romanian. The local restaurants were all run by Indians/Pakistanis and the local shops staffed by everybody except native Londoners. We heard more Urdu than English.

Give me the peace and tranquility of the countryside any day.

err... yes... thats it rhys;)

Good luck dave, I'd love to live in London after I finish my degree... My sister moved there this year, just started an advertising job and she's living in the Bermondsey area, rents pretty good i think and she's got pretty good connections to central london where she works. I dont know much else about it really, but I think it's an up and coming area with quite a bit of new development.

Yeah.. Bermondsey's not too bad if you don't mind living with bars on your windows and pikey's with knives. Had a mate living there up until fairly recently...

For connections to Kings Cross you might want to consider Bayswater or Notting Hill. Notting Hill being the better of the two i've mentioned.

Good luck with your search.

Pete, ideally somewhere similar to where I am now:

Secure development with concierge and secure parking, loft style tho' probably one bed rather than the two I have now, unfurnished, modern, clean, local corner shop, Sainsbury's home delivery :D A decent size studio would do actually as I'm not home that much ... kipping and weekends! Washer and dishwasher essential  Two kitties. Garden would be nice but I know the security problems of a garden flat. Quiet. No noisy as*hole neighbours. £1000 give or take. A flat share in the above kinda place I would consider if the right person.

Cheers fergalsharky, agree Shoreditch is a good option these days.

I know Herne Hill Neil. A mate of mine lived there. A bit far for me :D Give me a shout if you're in Brum and happy to buy you a greasy cafe lunch in the Jewellery Quarter ... good shooting spot ;-)

Rhys ... you sound like a country bumpkin who's never travelled further than his own village Post Office

Bermondsey I checked out when I was looking to buy a place several years ago. It is an option if you pick the right development. Good Sunday market too.

Fadferrit Notting Hill is an option but a bit over-pricey in my opinion.

Cheers lads :-)

Ohhh Arrrrrr! <chews on a wheat stalk>
Beyond them hills be Englishmen.
You don't want to go there!

Lol.

I am actually well travelled - Rome, Berlin, Riga, Warsaw, Vilnius, Tallinn, Helsinki, New York, Washington DC, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam etc.

Cities are not my favourite places. I prefer the countryside.

if you're bussing it to Kings Cross be prepared for delays. That area gets snarled up pretty badly - especially with all the regeneration work going on at the moment. But if you don't mind using the tube then Kings Cross is pretty well connected. You could go north up to Highgate area (your budget might get you something up there) - nice neighbourhood and handy for the Northern Line.
