I took this picture over the weekend.

The lighting was pretty harsh and I have dimmed it down a fair amount, burnt some parts of the pictures. I would really appreciate any comments / tips on any aspect of the picture as I am still a newbie in photography =)

p/s: is the shadow at the bottom of the bridge very distracting? should I merge a properly exposed bit of the bottom of the bridge with the picture or is it fine?

The subject is quite nice. Good strong leading line - a plus for landscape shots - With an interesting terminus. (Though a little small on this scale, I am sure that an 8 x 12 of this you can see the island (?) buildings just fine.) The main thing you have working against you with this is the time of day. You are right about the shadows being little overpowering. But on the other side, the sky has been whited out. In other words, the dynamic range of the scene is more than your camera can handle.

If this area is just down the street and around the corner, try re-shooting within an hour of dawn or dusk. Should be less overall contrast. Or, if you shot RAW, process the shot twice - once for shadows and again for highlights and then blend them.

Nice shot, the only things that I see that could improve the shot, in addition to radtechs comments, would be to clone out the telephone poles and the nail in the post on the left center of the picture. Alittle picky but also alittle distracting.....
