Taking a trip to Africa next month for the holidays. Money is all tied up in the trip and getting gifts for the loved ones, so forking up the cash for another camera as a back-up is out of the question right now. Anyone know where I can rent a 1D for about 3 weeks in or around the Washington DC area?

That sounds soooo exciting!! Did you google for a camera store near your area? What if you don't find a 1D to rent, would you rent anything else as a backup? I can't wait to see your pictures.

Yeah, I've Googled. But I'm too lazy to sift through all the garbage that came up. Beer does that. I'd prefer to have another 1D (original, mark II or mark II n), but contrary to my controversial thread about non-1D camera bodies, I'm not beyond using other EF mounts.

Tell us more, where are you going? Do you have to have a back up camera? I would have thought you were well sorted as it is.

Will do, Jon. Thanks. I'm also trying to work out a deal to rent equipment from Kev in New Jersey. BTW, now that I'm in your neck of the woods I promise not to TP your house.

I'm wearing thongs to Africa. Ethiopia to be exact.

I was. Until I prematurely sold off some stuff. There was a period from August up to now that I wasn't out shooting near as much as I wanted to. I needed cash to help mitigate moving expenses. I so regret it.

Don't regret it - it's equipment that you can replace when you're ready. Can't help with the rent question, but I admire the fact that you're heading to Africa. Big, wonderful (mostly) continent, with a few trouble spots. I trust that you're not going into a "hot" zone since this is a vacation.
