I was looking up canon in "News" online and saw this: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/09/canon_judge.html
Quite interesting, Immagine if we were to all whine, haha kidding.
But I had a few of these problems myself.

Well, there was someone on the EOS digital cameras forum that wanted to sue Canon because he was getting Error 99 while on vacation, and Canon wouldn't give him a replacement

I was doing a little reading, 60 complaints doesn't sound like an opportunity to file a class action suit. It really sounds like Consumer Affairs is deliberately looking for bad news in order to make themselves look like the 'good guys'. Of course to a mad-as-heck consumer it would sound great - they're singing their tune.
I'm not trivializing the problem, and I really do hope that the folks with an honest problem got it sorted out but check out the very insightful post by DavidW in this thread:

Too many people come here, post, ask "I dropped my camera, will Canon repair it under warranty?" it seems almost endemic, I have met many of these in many other situations, where they seem to equate warranty with "covered against EVERYTHING". That is not true by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes manufacturers will do "goodwill repairs", but they shouldn't be expected to.
Not saying I am immune.. one of my all time favorite zooms had its zoom ring jam 3 months after I bought it. This lens had always been babied (being a favorite, DUH!), carried in a Lowepro Rezo140 with padded dividers on both sides. Worked fine until halfway through an evening shoot in very good weather when I felt something sticking. 5 days turnaround and it was back in my hands with a small freebie for me to keep. Impressed? Yes, definitely. However, if I'd really dropped it by accident, I would declare that to them up front and see what they would do. Sounds too idealistic? Maybe, but that's who I am. The proof is simple: till today I have NO idea, even after reading the service report which said "Lens sticks. Disassembled, cleaned, lubricated", why the zoom jammed. If it was a drop - I would know. Heck, they would know. But nothing was ever said.. I never did find out. I can only guess that some component may not have received adequate lubrication the first time around.
