I've just returned from a week of holidays in New York (suffering from jetlag right now...).
Ofcourse I visited the well-known B&H photo store (http://www.bhphoto.com). It's a very nice and very big store, they've just got EVERYTHING there! Helpful and friendly service, not like the many small electronics and photo shops around Times Square, where the sales people are very aggressive and try to sell you all kinds of stuff that you don't want.
I bought the 17-40 f/4L at B&H for $700; it's my second EOS lens (I also have the 28-135 IS USM) and my first "L" lens.
My first impressions:
It's a very nice and small lens, it's very well finished, made of metal (unlike the 28-135 which is made of plastic). The 28-135 is great but is a bit loose, the 17-40 looks much more sturdy. The L lens really gives you a high quality look and feel compared to the non-L.
The lens doesn't change shape when zooming - it doesn't extend, the zoom mechanism is completely internal. The lens has two rings, one for zooming and one for manual focus, but they are in the opposite order compared to the 28-135 (the ring on the front is for focussing, the ring on the camera side for zooming).
Like with all L lenses, the lens hood and a carrying pouch is included.
