Does anyone know if you can do this for your own use. I hate the thought of having the only CD of PS CS getting damaged and needing to reinstall it later. I by no means would ever let anyone use it or sell it but wondering if anyone does this for their own backup?

Seeing as how blank CD's are not very expensive why not make a copy and let us know how it turned out :D

I think making the copy will be easy.
Activating the copy may be another matter. (or, to put it another way, activating the original if you activated the copy. . .)

You can activate CS on two computers.
http://www.adobe.com/activation/main.html
Q: Can I activate Photoshop CS software on more than one computer?
A: The activation process supports installation on two machines. Adobe's Product License Agreement allows a user to install the product on a primary and a secondary computer as long as the product is not being used concurrently on the two machines. While the activation process supports installing and activation Photoshop CS on two machines, the usage of the product on the secondary computer is restricted to the main user who licensed the software. Allowing others to use Adobe software on a secondary computer violates the Product License Agreement.

It is usually legal to make a back up copy of a CD for you own use. (at least I have yet to hear otherwise) there was a law that protected the rights of those who wish to do so. Again the issue would be the actual installation.
If you are unsure how to make a functioning copy,. that is another question.
You will need two things.
1. A CD-R that will allow a bit by bit copy to be made,. a process called ,.. you guessed it RAW copying. :)
2. Software that supports RAW data coppying.
1. Should be easy these days,. a while back in the age of 4X and 8X CD-R drives there were very few that would support RAW recording.. names like Plextor and some Yamaha, now they all seem to.
2. Nero does,. but a simple tool is "Clone-CD" the original RAW burning tool.

I can make the copy with out a problem, just wanted to make sure it was not breaking the law. I normally make a copy as soon as I open it and use the copy and put the original back in the box. But with this being such an expensive program wanted to check. I did do this with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional and I saved the original 4 disks incase I messed up one. That program has outlasted several PC's.

I make copies of all my software... for my own use. I too am afraid of something happening to the disk. I've got three boys around here and never know what's where half the time. I never thought I might be breaking the law.

Read the EULA (End User License Agreement). It is the long, boring, legal stuff that most people never read yet they still click "Yes" saying that they read it. Somewhere in that EULA you should find the restrictions set forth by Adobe and that you have agreed to when you installed the software.

I too make backups of all my software. I do this before I install the program(s) then I install from the backups this way I know the backups are good. I wouldn't be concerned about breaking any laws as there are for personnel use and are not being giving away.
