What kind of music do they do? Are they going for a specific "look"? You'd shoot a different background for an industrial metal band to a pop band or country...

Go down to the local book exchange/pre-used thrift shop whatever. Get some 50cent used 60s 70's 80's pop music books. Disregard the fashion and reverse engineer the shots you like; look at the light and the backgrounds used. You'll see cliche stairways, cars, recording studios, alleys, subways and other locations. Its cliche because it works.

...and there is a good flickr group for posed bands shots (not performance shots) or "Press shots".

It should really depend on what type of music they play. Alot of indie/rock bands have done shoots around industrial buildings and sites, but not alot of bands want the indie look.
