Guys,
just read on dpreview about the announcement of the new above mentioned lens. :P

What do you guys think of this lens? I like the versatility that this lens provides, are there any drawbacks of getting a lens with such a broad range? Am i better off getting a 17-40L and a 70-200L.

My first lens was a 28-200mm which I then exchanged fro a 28-300mm..
Then I got turned on to the high quality lenses and the 28-300mm now sits on a shelf.
I would love to hear that this lens is in fact of "L" quality across it's zoom range. If it is 3/4 as good as say, the 100-400mm IS,. I will own this lens (and paint it black so I can "blend in" like I did with the 28-300mm :) )
But untill the reveiws are out,. who knows.
It may be a break through,. it may be a Dog.

Yeah, ive been looking to break into th "L"ete range, and i think if it does deliver the quality across the whole range i will have to sell all i own and a promisory note for my first born to get my hands on it. :D.
Bring on the matte black paint :o.

This seems to be a special situations lens. When you absolutely must be able to go from 28 to 300 and back in a hurry. For instance, on the field at the Superbowl. I'm sure you'll be giving up some image quality, but when you have to have this range, this is likely to be the best lens available. Not a good walking around lens however -- it weighs 3.7 lbs (1670g)!

I've also had a need to work out a bit too, build up those biceps.

It's ok, the camera will be 3.7 lbs heavier, but your wallet will be 3.7 lbs lighter, so it evens out. :D

No worries about vignetting with such a broad range?

The specs of this new lens are great: great zoom range, image stabilizer (I love this on my 28-135), ultra-sonic motor for fast and quiet autofocus, and "L" quality.
For general use it is, however, too large and heavy and too conspicuous. If you walk with a lens like that on the street, everybody will look at you. I wonder why Canon makes their large L lenses white - I don't like that at all. I just bought the 17-40L and I love the fact that it's small, light and black! The 28-300L is also very expensive.... $2500 / €2500 !!
If you get a 17-40 f/4L and a 70-200 f/4L you'll miss a little zoom range, but these two together are much cheaper than the 28-300L.
What about the new Canon EF 70 - 300 mm DO IS USM (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04012902canon70300do.asp)? It looks like a great, small, inconspicuous zoom lens - just a bit slow with f/4.5-5.6, and unfortunately it's not an "L". For me, it's much more attractive than the 28-300L.

Jesper, i agree with you there, price will become a consideration when it finally hits the shelves here in Australia. I have only heard good things about the 17-40 f/4L and 70-200 f/4L, so i guess i will have to have a play with the 28-300L when i get the chance and see if its worth paying double the price for 1 lens.

It will be interesting to see this new lens. Though it is quite versatile and a good lens to say, take trekking, as it is not as heavy or cumbersome as the 28-300L.
