We are now almost 8 hours past the time to post the challenge winners...something must have happened to GPete...can't email (profile doesn't allow), hasn't "closed" the competition, hasn't posted challenge rankings. As runner-up last week, shall I complete the judging and post the rankings this evening? I could use some advice!
Regards,
gewb

please go ahead Gewb
thank you
I think the reason everyone has left things so long is because they keep expecting Gpete to 'appear' any minute

I agree with marie
I sent a PM to GPete 7 hours ago, no answer.
We are waiting your post now. Thank you gewb

I re-read the Challenge rules but there was nothing that related to the Host not completing their Challenge, only that the top place photographer had until noon GMT on Wednesday to post a new challenge (see Host Rule number 7: "If the winner can't be contacted and doesn't respond by Wednesday noon GMT, the second-place winner will host the challenge. Etcetera.")
As GPete is "missing in action" and I placed 2nd in the Challenge GPete won, I will judge this challenge - note that I "don't have a dog in this fight" (I did not submit a photo in this challenge).
I have tried to interpret what GPete might have looked for by reading the link provided in the Challenge. So, without further ado, here is what I have selected.
1. teekay - Pre-dawn Mooring
This most closely follows what I thought was the intent of the Challenge. I especially liked the "balance of thirds" as well as the subject. I would have preferred it to be a little under exposed.
2. andrewaaa5 - when 'stich mode' goes 'wrong'
Another pic that follws what I thought was GPete's intent. I really like the natural light in the room and all of the interesting object. But I especially like the humor in showing when something doesn't go as planned!
3. Stephen Martin - Joshua Tree Silhouette
Also follows my interpretation of GPete's challenge. I can closely connect with this photo and what it takes to shoot. If Stephen had compressed the file a little closer to the 100k upload limit the photo would have had better/more detail in the tree. The file is only 30.8k...90k to 99k for a 640pixel image would have been much better! I may write a short tutorial on using The GIMP to do photo/file sizing.
I hope GPete is OK and returns to submit more entries!

Whoa! Thank you - I think! It so happens this week that I placed first in the challenge in the "small compacts" forum so now I'm stuck with judging two at once this time. I'm going to ease my load by setting the same subject in both forums so it will be very interesting to see how photos from the two different groups of camera owners compare.
Incidentally I had some difficulty, as I expect others did, in trying to understand exactly what the judge wanted this week. In the end I thought "ambient light" would rule out any obvious sources of light such as the sun in sunsets, so entered this one that was taken in almost luminous air before dawn near Valdez, Alaska.
The new challenge will be posted within the half hour!

GPete, I'm really honored that you selected my photo...
However, I am going to defer to gewb's ruling on this one, and ask that teekay host the next contest. I agreed that someone needed to step in and judge the contest in the absence of GPete, and I believe it was judged fairly.
Also, I happen to be extremely busy with work for the next month, so I would be most happy to simply participate in the contests, rather than having to host one.
Teekay I really enjoyed your photograph...and the others as well! Looking forward to the next contest!

I hope people don't think I over-eagerly jumped the gun on this by accepting Gewb's list of winners and starting another challenge but I think everyone, including myself, had assumed that Gpete had deserted, for whatever reason, his job of judge and had left it to others to sort out the mess.
I think this points out that anyone who enters and wins should either take on the job of judging seriously or pass on the job to someone else right from the start. After all, people from all over the world are taking the trouble to enter these challenges in good faith and should expect judges also to take time to do their best.
Thank you, Stephen Martin for being so gracious about accepting Gewb's choices.
Gpete, I think in fairness to all, particularly to Gewb who took on your job after you had apparently deserted, you should now edit your posting and remove your own choice of winners. This will avoid any further confusion about this screwed up challenge.

I am so glad to quote Stephen Martin and teekay posts because they outlined my own thoughts precisely. I was stuck figuring out how to say that in English.
Congratulations teekay, andrewaaa5 and Stephen Martin for winning with these interesting and beautiful pictures.

The Winners are:
1 Joshua Tree Silhouette
2 Sunset
3 Vedic Lights
Thankyou Everyone for posting your shots there were great, very nice!
the winners shot won 1st choice because I feel its a prime example of ambient light and suttle enough to make a strong effect with backlighting, 2nd choice has
nice use of shadow + sun's reflec. light, 3rd choice gives a similar feeling with shadow and has a nice perspective + brilliant sky.
Honorable mentions go to "breaking the shadows", "pre-dawn morning" and
"when the day is done"
My Apology's for the late post as i've been out
Thanks again to everyone for participating
Cheers, so long all

GPete won the right to host this challenge because he was the winner of challenge #93 BUT:
In my opinion:
GPete lost the right to announce the winners after being 37 hours late on his duties as host:
There was no closing post on Monday noon GMT, there was no clue of what happened to him until the winners were announced by gewb ( http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2326255&postcount=15), 13 hours after Tuesday noon GMT.
Only after that, GPete posted another set of winners, but Stephen Martin wrote:

The challenge # 95 HOME is already posted by teekay and running fine as usual so let’s return to enjoy the comments erasing (I hope) all the misinformation generated by GPete.
Please be aware that this post has nothing personal against GPete, I hope he will understand after knowing the rules and the timing of these challenges better.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, I was thinking about the title of my pic in this challenge ("When Stich Mode Goes Wrong") and I was just looking through some old photos of some old 'stitch' pictures taken on the G3, and found a few more where I think 'stitch' mode did not work as well as I would have liked it to. I guess a tripod may have helped in both cases and perhaps better 'stitch' software than Canon's proprietary. Attached are 2:
...however they remind me (ever so slightly ;) ) of some of the photo-montage works of David Hockney. If only I have the time [and patience] to create such large and beautiful montages as Hockney. Here are some examples by David Hockney:

("Portrait of the Artist's Mother")
http://www.physics.hku.hk/~tboyce/ap/topics/hockney/pearblossom5.jpg
("Pearblossom Highway")

(I think this one is called "Furstenberg, Paris")
...and below are some of my sketchy stitches, that have gone slightly wrong : )

thank you very much Terry
I was hoping to get to see this wood again over past few weeks as I usually visit it when the huge mass of bluebells arrive in May
its a truly wondeful sight to behold and catches one's breath.
seems to be bluebells for miles under the tall pale green leafy trees and when the sun is shining down through those trees its sheer magic how the light falls
(due to circumstances I was not able to get to see the sight this May)
thanks again
hope all is well
