View Full Version : P.O.T.N. Anonymous

Claire

Hi,
My name is Claire and I'm a P.O.T.N. addict.

I realised it after having a very strange dream involving posting on the forum. My subscription list is waaay too long and threads have to be unsubscribed at a regular basis. When someone new has posted in the subscribed thread, I can't stop myself from checking "who it was".

This just goes to show that the forum is dangerously addictive and for all you out there that are having the same problem, I've opened a thread for us all to ventilate our thoughts around this addiction.

I will unveil the 12 Step Programme for P.O.T.N. Anonymous within a short time. For now, feel free to introduce yourselves. If you find it hard to be open about it, just take a deep breath, we're all friends here. Do feel free to tell us when you first realised that you had become an addict and how it has affect you.

Welcome to P.O.T.N. Anonymous. ;)

hi, my name is roeddel and i am a POTN addict. my "problem" started when i would wake up at midnight just to check who replied to my posts. and even if i didnt have any replies, i would hang and wait for another hour and read other posts. thats when it all went downhill. since being a POTN addict, i have also become an L-coholic. PLEASE HELP ME! :D

Hi, I too am a POTN addict. My addiction started when I discovered how to use the tabs "UserCp" and "NewPosts". I now have a window open whether at work or at home and click to get my fix a couple of times an hour. I use to check the headlines first thing in the morning but now it's right to POTN. I have not sunk to the levels of depravity as some and set POTN to my homepage as that would be the equivalent of living is a cardboard box just to feed your habit, but I have moved up the POTN link so that I do not have to scroll through a bunch of links just to get my daily POTN fix and I fear that homepage is next.

I have bird feathers on my brain, square eyes, backache due to sitting on an office chair instead of a nice comfortable chair, I have the shakes...what I mean is, my fingers are twitching and longing for the computer keyboard.
I have eating disorders because my meal is sitting at the table stone cold, coffee and tea is always drunk stone-cold...please I'm desperate I NEED HELP!

Hi, my name is Jim and I'm known as Jazz.

I've been a member for a couple of years and really don't post all that often. I rarely post photos for comment and rarely comment on others photos, there are just too many good pictures and I'm learning way too much just being an active lurker.

Really though, I don't post much, but I'm here so much it must be an addict:(

but what a sweet addiction:lol:

I don't plan on changing my habits any time soon. Except maybe to post pictures more often (need to be less critical of myself)

POTN Rules. An addiction that does not add weight:lol:

If I keep POTN (sounds like Poutine, eh?) up all the time, does that mean I'm mainlining:confused:

Hi, my name is Tom and I am a POTN' holic. It all started about two years ago, I was going thru a low point in my life. I had no inspiration. My pictures were dull. I was lonely, weak and desperate. Going from forum to forum gave no hope. Then I found this bar...err..forum and I started to come back to it more often than not. A little bit more each day. And then, the moment I started having breakfast on my computer desk, I realised I had an addiction... I'm ashamed, please help!

This is easy to fix. Our esteemed Belmondo recommends a recliner with small computer and wireless keyboard for the pain-in-the-rear (sitting induced, of course, not POTN induced). I will recommend you start eating in front of the computer.... :D

Keyboards are just $9 if you mess up... well, at least mine are. ;)

Actually, POTN is the cheap part. It's the other stuff, bodies, lenses, bags, tubes, filters, etc. that sucks money like a 3 1/2 horsepower shop vac sucks sawdust.:lol:

BTW, all of you, look for this sign. How many of you have added "POTN" to your spell checker. If you have, your probably addicted. ;)

Both! ;) We should learn to deal with our addiction the best we can. You know, be honest, admit it, talk about it & help with making things easier.
Like telling each other what type of food should be/shouldn't be eaten by the computer, turn off email notification to not get mail bombardiny your inbox, suggest software for practicing speed typing...

In the addiction world, you would be known as an "enabler". Someone who makes it guilt free and easy to do. No "costs" for our addiction.

In this case, I think the proper term would be "sweet heart":D

I dont feel like I am an addict as of yet. However I do feel that I am going in that direction. I like to watch, I do reply and there has been times I post new. I like watching the most I think. I say to myself "WOW how did they do that" or "is that something I can learn to do". This is why I feel as though i am going in the direction of becoming a P.O.T.N addict.

What I fear the most is this. I will learn from this and its going to change me in ways I never felt possible.

Note: If you try this you are on your own and fully responsible for any consequences, good or bad..

Quite reasonable. I recommend partial or spot meter with this one, since evaluative/CW will take into account the corners.

Full AF (including awesome AF :D), very fast USM, fully operational stabilizer. BTW, the 17-85 even registers its lens data properly in the EXIF. There is sufficient mirror clearance on a 1D to safely operate this combo even at 17mm where the rear element sticks out the most.

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=790&g2_serialNumber=1

Please "bring your own crop" now that the camera will not do it though :D Note that because you MUST crop the image (unless you particularly love vignetting), you essentially are getting a 28-135mm FOV, which is the same as 1.6X crop factor. You get 120% viewfinder coverage (no kidding), and almost-like-rangefinder "out of the lens" image coverage to some extent.

Assuming you were crazy enough, you could create your own Photoshop actions or ImageMagick scripts to batch crop, and 'score' the 1D focusing screen with an X-acto knife (if you stuff up, it's only $30? that's the 1D advantage.. but I'm not brave enough to try) to provide framelines in your viewfinder.

I can almost hear nzgl3-user screaming "NUTS, THESE PEOPLE ARE NUTS!" :D Yes, I am.....it would definitely take nuts (both kinds) to try something like this :D

What would be awesome if someone was to do this conversion to a 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, that way 1D shooters would have 2.8 AND IS, with 8.5fps, 45-point AreaAF and then some.

theflyingkiwi

You need to remove the rear baffle:

http://pix.lightrefineries.org/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=796&g2_serialNumber=1

Which is not that hard.. at least on my lens, the baffle pops in and out with gentle finger pressure. Once removed, the lens becomes effectively an EF mount, although the rear element WILL collide with a full frame mirror - one reason you don't see me using it on my 5D :D
