I recently got a Canon s50, and I can't tell a difference in redeye performance in auto mode. The flash appears to do the same thing know matter what setting. This camera has a auto focus beam, and thought something might be interfering so I shut that off. No change. I am used to getting a strobbing flash for redeye. Is this camera different and I just don't know it? Or is it defective?

Thanks :?

I'm not sure on the S50, but the A70 uses the focus beam to blind the subject before taking the photo. It is likely the same on the S50.

you're right it does use its autofocus beam for red eye reduction.
it's a reduction so there's always a little bit red eye effect

That's kind of funny because that is the way I think of it. The blinding beam if you look into it. I just didn't see a difference in intensity between redeye or no redeye function. I guess it would be a digital camera drawback. This is my first digital camera so I am still learning a lot. I like the camera a lot, and it does take nice pictures. I took a full face on close up of my 1 year old nephew and he was all red eye. Definitely a job for the photo editor.

I read that the closer the flash is to the lens the more problems that you get with red eye. The plus is that you can edit that out.
