View Full Version : What would you do with $7,000?

Lets imagine that you won $7,000 in Vegas <or insert other source of windfall here>

This is found money, unexpected, totally gravy (and groovy). To make this really like fantasy-land, imagine if you had no other use for that money and your significant other actually wants you to spend it on photo equipment

Would you jump and buy the 1D2? (assume its $4,500)... And some lenses, that extra $2,500 can buy some really nice glass...

Would you buy the 1Ds - and nothing else, as that's what its going for right now - $7,000

Would you buy a 1Ds if it was $5,000?

I can guess the answer, and I think the 1Ds in its current state is practically dead. It will have to be $5,000, not more, based on features the D2 offers.

The 1D will do well, I think, at around $2,500 or even $3,000.

The 10D I think will be ok at $1,200 or so.

Anyway, enjoy all that cash

Point taken and in that case I am changing my answer. I will buy the 1D MKII, a remote and another 550EX. Since I'm spending like a drunken sailor I'll add a couple of 4Gig CF cards to my collection.

I had a bunch of smartass answers all ready to go, but then I re-read your question and saw it was limited to what equipment would you buy. So, I'll actually try to give you a serious answer

I would use it to buy a bigger prime lens. I currently have the 400mm f/5.6, and really would love to have the 600mm f/4.0L, or maybe the f/2.8L version of the 300 (with a doubler, that would give me a 600mm f/5.6).

I really haven't caught 1D Mark II fever yet. I couldn't be happier with any camera than I am with my 10D's. As long as they challenge me, I am not likely to be dissatisfied with them. When I reach the point where they are no longer reliable, or if I feel my photography would improve with a newer, better DSLR, then I might go looking. Till then, I’ll spend my $7K on optics.

I'd cover the 12-400 mm range with the best glass I could get. And a new 550EX flash. :)

If there were anything left over, I'd get a couple of CF cards.

Geeh. Looks like I'm the only one to get the 10D + LOTS of nice lenses. :D

Let's see:

10D = $1500 (can ya just throw in that 50 f/1.8 in there for me please? :D)

Sigma 12-24 = $650

17-40L = $700

24-70L = $1200

70-200L IS = $1600

70-200L f/4 = $550

Sub-total = $6200

Throw in assorted goodies like filters, maybe upgrade my 420ex to 550ex, etc. and add tax to the whole thing, and I'm sure we're talking ~$7000 there. :D

Actually, I'm not sure I'd want both 70-200L's -- and not even sure which I'd really want since the 70-200L IS is 2x the weight. I might be better served w/ a longer zoom since I won't want to lug it around too much -- the 70-200L f/4 is much more luggable and would see much more use.

[edit: Forgot that I should throw in some primes besides just the 50 f/1.8. :D So instead of 17-40L and 70-200L IS, I'd go for a few primes and a longer zoom (and still have that 70-200L f/4). ]

LOL! You read my mind on that (and finished typing before I did), except I don't already have a Canon body of course, so must do that along w/ a 10D. :D

I should have thought to include accessories as well as lenses. But you guys get what I meant

Interesting that many folks would pick lenses over a sexy thing like the 1D2 :o That's probably the smart thing to do though ... for $7,000 you can get a LOT of nice lenses or ONE big freakin' thing like this (600 4.0 L IS)

I would sell my 10D, buy the 1D Mark II and some other stuff: good tripod, remote control, 550EX, the new 28-300 L lens. Unfortunately I don't have $7,000 and the 1D Mark II is way out of my budget.

Canon have caused you a real problem with their numbering - your apostrophe is not right but had you left it out, would folks know whether the '0' or the 's' were mistakes?

Two years from now I could just as easily be 6 feet under so, in my case, I would get the 1D MK II NOW while the getting's still good and I'm still getting enough air in my lungs to enjoy life (or at least, enjoy the fact that I'm still alive).

And I'll keep the remaing money for the 10D MK II. THen I'll be happy since I'll have the 1D MK II slung around my neck in front of my, the 10D over my left shoulder and the newer 10D MK II over my right shoulder. (I'm reserving my back for when my wife gets too tired to carry her G3).

Unfortunately, I’m not enough of a grammarian to know the proper was to write the plural of 10D without creating the mistaken impression that I own a 10Ds (whatever that is). The fault lies not with Canon’s choice of model designations, but with my propensity for sleeping through my English classes many years ago.

The fact is, I have two 10Ds (10D's) and I'm not sure how to refer to them collectively. Maybe 1010DD, or 20(2D), or 10D10D. What a puzzlement.

Obviously you also had the propensity to sleep through Math, too. Otherwise, you'd know that the proper way to indicate you have two of that object which is the subject of this post is written as 2 X 10D as in:

"I couldn't be happier with any camera than I am with my 2 X 10D."

Now you've really confused me.
2X is my shirt size.
I can't imagine what shirt sizes have to do with cameras (other than to say, "I lost my shirt buying expensive cameras.")

Back (for a moment) to the original question, I would go for the 1Ds to get my coveted full frame. :D While it is true that the MkII will be old news in a year or so, it is not likely that Canon will market a full-frame digital in the pro-sumer range in the near future. I am hoping the replacement for the 10D will move to the 1.3 crop factor, so if I don't get this fantasy windfall that is my target. :)

Good point. For those that crave a real 35mm, a $5,000 1Ds may seem like a steal. Though the $5,000 price point is pure speculation, but it just seems that with a $4,500 1D II with the lightning fast fps and huge buffer, and same or better features otherwise... Net-net, how much are 3 megapixels and a full frame going to be worth to people, versus the FPS and buffer.

To me, not at all. I'd love to have the speed, and 3megapixels don't do anything for me, and 1.3 versus 1.0 aren't important.

I am at a loss right now, I like the idea of the 1D Mark II. My question now is what is in the pipeline? Does Canon have another camera they aren't telling us about like to trump everyone else? If that is the case, at what cost? I must agree that the revamped 1D Mark II is sometihng to drool over but we are kinda running up against a wall for the average photog. It comes back to justifying an amateur photog spending $4500 on a camera when he spent $2300 setting up the 10D. That would be me. I had to procure some stuff in pounds and that jacked up the price a fair bit. I don't regret it. I would much rather, im most cases if it iwas a necessity to buy stuff in pounds and deal with the $ to £ exchange rate than to have to wait for this lame ass American store to get their heads out called AAFES (Another Airman Frustrated Every Second). This was really wild, the last time I was up there, they have the FlashTrax 40GB drive for about $100 less than B&H and no shipping or tax either. That must be a one-off. I had to beg and plead with them to carry the 512MB CF cards. They told me it would be several months. I went to Jessops and got one fot £130 and that day I had a message waiting that it came in and I got that one as well. So I have 2x 512MB CF cards. Neither one of them are lightning fast by any stretch of the imagination.

I wonder about WA ont he Mark II??? I wonder if the SD cards will have WA in the future??? Chalk that up to major speculation!

Cheers from England,

From an English minor and a good grammarian: When the meaning of a sentence will be confused using standard English grammar, change the wording or break the grammar rules. In this case, just change the wording:

I do not own two 10D cameras; I do own one 10Ds camera, which I like very much.

Actually I own one DRebel, which I like very much.

According to Chuck Westfall ~
There's no explicit support for WA at this time, but 5MB per second "ain't too shabby."

I'm with Tom in sticking with my 10D (in my case, 10D x 1). Certainly I drool over the 1DMKII, and I would like to make my 10D a backup in a year or two once the next new thing has the early adopters scrambling for poll positions.

I have to say though, the 10D challenges me more than I it so my money (gravy or not) is better spent on glass. I love the extra 'reach' the 1.6x factor gives me and Dell's not likely to start selling a mispriced 500mm or 600mm f4L IS so I'd say that's where my money will go.

I'd get the 500mm f4L IS and some nice legs or the 600mm f4L IS all by itself and just sit in a corner giggling incessantly; using it as a macro lens indoors until Spring saves us from the grip of Minnesota's wintery -20 degrees!

But that's just me ;).

Since I have not yet begun to plumb the depths of the 10D's capibilities (I was asleep in math class but wide awake in speeling) I would first drive down to B&H and then go nuts with a couple of "L" IS lens. For those times when I cannot get Gitzo set up fast enough a 100-400 L IS. For "reach out and tough someone" shooting a 500 F4 L IS. Any left over change would go to a 1.5TC and a couple of filters.
Hey I'm easy
