OK, back in my point-and-shot non-digital days, when I dropped off my film I had two choices: glossy or matte. Now I'm happily printing out my own pictures from home (with my new i9100), but my choices are a little different. Both Canon and Epson have nice gloss papers. Both Canon and Epson have matte papers that produce nice prints (from their respective printers) but feel like cardboard. Epson does have a semi-gloss paper that looks and feels like those "matte" prints from the old days. Does Canon have an equivalent paper? If not, can I safely venture to another paper manufacturer and still get quality results?

Thanks,
-Deva (desperately wanting "matte" paper from the old days...) :)

I also have the i9100 as well as a couple of other Canon printers, and the best papers I have found that fit into what you are asking for are in Ilford's Galerie range and the top end of the Tetenal products.

My personal favourite is Tetenal Fine Art Glossy.

Wow, thanks for the reference. And you find that these papers have no adverse reactions to the Canon inks? I don't want any pictures fading after 1 year sitting in a frame... :)

Thanks again,
-Deva

Check out the Ilford and Tetenal sites for details including printer settings or profiles. I have used both with my i9100 since I got it last May and these papers give outstanding results.

Here I get Tetenal in better photo shops. For the US, guess you can ask them by e-mail:

With Ilford, Primarily the Gallerie Professional range.

Smooth Fine Art 100% Rag, Acid free textured matte paper is absolutely magical for portraits, particularly children. I don't think it has a particularly high longevity with dye inks though.

Smooth Pearl and Smooth Gloss are both great, Pearl when you want a little less gloss, but not matte.

From Tetenal, their Photo Archival Matte is the only matte I use and like.

Tetenal Premium Fine Art Glossy is my favorite glossy of all.

What I particularly like is about all these papers is that they are thick, considerably thicker than the Canon papers.

I don't make a big thing about profiling and hair-splitting color management with these papers. I just follow the manufacturer's recommendations on the sheet in the package or on their websites. Either the print is "right" or it's not, whatever the monitor shows.
