Example 2
Portraiture This is cropped and resized only for details. Subject was less than three feet away.

Example 3 Macro The true side to this lens. 100% crop showing the photographer and sky in the eyes of a small Jumping spider. The spider was upside down on a leaf. I could not pass this capture up.

Original resized image...

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m139/gerbalhunter/Insects/JumperontheProwl.jpg

This lens is tack sharp on all three ends of the spectrum. If you are doubting, or skeptical to get this lens, you shouldn't worry, as it is all that, and then some.

I will also admit that no PP'ing was done to any of these captures. The need to edit, was just not needed.

Thats what makes a lens GREAT.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to shoot anything since I bought this lens in April, but now that my vacation started I've been trying it out and I'm mighty impressed.
It's so amazingly sharp, and very versatile!:)

Here are a few snaps from the first few days out with it:

Yamaha outboard

Fuel tank 'clip' (Suzuki)

Factory plate of an old aluminium boat

Old (70+ years) nautical chart

A sauna oven from the inside, I could only hold the camera still for about half a second before the heat became too intense.
The colours were really that saturated!

It'll fit an XSi fine. It's true that any EF-S lens won't fit a full-frame camera, but an XSi isn't full-frame.

60mm f/2.8 macro USM or 85mm f/1.8 USM

I'm planning to get either one of the above for my 40D body, it'll be used mainly for food photography.

From what i've gathered thus far, the cost for both lenses are very similar, 60mm f/2.8 macro cost slightly more and is sharper. While it has less bokeh overall compared to 85mm f/1.8. And of course the plus point of 60mm is the macro.

Can someone care to share some experience?

kozmix

Hey, just get the 60, you won't get those nice closeups with the 85, the minimum focus distance is huge!

Take a look at my redbubble web on my sig, all the food shots were taken with the 60, 580 and a reflector.

You already know the spec, so this lens somehow struggle from Low-light condition, but 60mm is a good short MACRO to hand held.

This thread is exactly why I joined this forum. I plan on upgrading from the 300D to the 50D in the next few weeks. From what I have read so far, without really good lenses, you cannot really exploit the capabilities of the 15MP because they are so tightly packed.

So I was debating on whether to get a EF 50mm f1.4 USM or the EF-S 60mm f/2.8.
From what I can see here, the 60mm performs very well as a short tele, but the macro capabilities are truly amazing.. I'm going with the 60mm.

The question wasn't directed to me, but as I also have both these lenses, I thought I'd weigh in! I love both of them, but if I could only keep one, it would be the 60 macro. There's just nothing I don't like about it; I would say it's close to being the "perfect" lens for a crop camera. Good focal length for general photography, sharp sharp sharp, terrific colour rendition, fast focusing, full macro capability, awesome portrait lens indoors and out, etc. etc. Where it really wins (for me) over the 85 is the minimum focusing distance. With the 60, you can really get up close. I do a lot of animal photography and often like to fill the frame with my subject. The 85 has a much longer MFD, which makes it a bit less versatile in this respect. The focal length of the 85 is also slightly odd (again, for me) on a crop camera, and then there's the question of the famous purple fringing which I find annoying sometimes. Don't get me wrong: I like the 85, it's produced some of my favourite shots of my kid, and there's "something" about human and animal portraits taken with the 85 that's really special. For versatility, however, the 60 macro wins. At least for me!

Don't get me wrong: I like the 85, it's produced some of my favourite shots of my kid, and there's "something" about human and animal portraits taken with the 85 that's really special. For versatility, however, the 60 macro wins. At least for me!
I'd have to agree with CeeGee. If forced to give up one it'd be the 85mm first. I can get great portrait shots from this 60mm lens so I'd still have that covered and have the additional macro capability that this lens specializes in. It's a great lens and so is the 85mm, for that matter. I won't be parting with either anytime soon (unless I go full frame then regrettably the 60 will have to go).

I figured that the 60mm would be better simply because it's a much newer, digitally-optimized optical design and it's supposed to be one of Canon's sharpest lenses, even wide-open. Thanks for the input guys!

I really like this thing. I am thinking about moving to either a 150 or 180mm macro only because I need more distance. If you don't, there is absolutely no reason to upgrade. I just happen to like photographing things that could bite/sting me or just creep me out at that close.

Guys, I hope someone reads this after you've discussed this a few weeks ago.
I am really really fighting with myself forcing a decision to make between the 60mm and 100mm macro.
As far as i understand you guys, the 60mm is more versatile than a 100mm?
The purpose for me is of course macro, but it would be nice if i can do great portraits too! I saw the girl below after a long day at disney's, and that looks really great. I.e, can i make that shot with a 100mm too?

Thanx for helping me out this decision in advance!

Most everyone will tell you that the 100 mm will do portraits just fine. However on a cropped camera it will be a bit long. Also when considering your macro lens there's a basic comment that everyone uses...the 60mm is great for flowers but the 100mm is what you'll need for bugs. You just can shoot from farther back with the 100 and not scare the little buggers away. Food for though in your decision. Either way you go, you can't go wrong.

Well i own a 500d (1.6) and after shooting some bugs with my tammy 18 270, i think that may be it for a while. SO the 60mm i will mostly use inside the house, foir portraits and for stills (objects, water, skin, pets etc).
My guess is that the 60mm will also be a little more light sensitive too, so that helps with handheld shooting and faster shutterspeeds.
In my case i think i'll go for the 60mm, therefore i only have to kill the (fast)bugs first that i really want too shoot:lol:

Do you agree? (i mean, am i making the right decision?) It's not about the money, i just want a lens wich fits my needs.

Last question left for me is (since you own the lens) if i can make use of my 430EXII or even the internal flah?

As expected, the lens (for me) does a great job. I ended up choosing the 60 instead of the 100mm just because i like it to use as a portrait lens and other purposes. For a crop cam like mine the 60mm was the best choice.

All images are right out of the camera (JPG not RAW) and only cropped for youre judgement..

DDWD10

The "slowness" is a function of the large range it has to scan through. For normal distances the AF is very snappy. I love this lens because it has remarkably sharp and consistent image quality across the aperture range. The 50/1.4 can't match that.
