I'm almost set on trading up from my Nifty Fifty to this lens. Any thoughts?

I am looking at this lens for food photography. I own a 50mm 1.8. I am curious if I'll be able to remove the 1.8 from my bag if I get the 60mm?

Do any of the 60mm owners here, also own the nifty fifty? And what are your thoughts on this?

Today I looked at two lenses.....

EF 50 Macro

EF-S 60 Macro

I asked why the EF-S cost so much more than the EF. The clerk just said .... " ket me put them in your hands ". I did and now own the EF-S 60 .... Oh yeah I bought a 70-200 f/4L as well !!!!!!!!

Yeah, about a year ago I ditched my Nifty for the Sixty. No regrets, the 60mm is simply the sharpest and most reliable lens I've ever owned.

Does most of you who have been taking photos in this thread been using a tripod?
Just wondering cause this lens has no IS.

Imaging that I'm using a macro lens hehe

A couple from when I owned mine along with a 40D,before going down the current 100 L and 7D/5D II route.
I think it's by far the best lens I've ever owned value for money wise.

This is a great lens and a question has been asked here a while ago if this would replace the 50 1.8, I bought the 60mm and shortly after sold the 50 because it just wasn't getting any more use.
Here's a couple shots taken with the 60mm. Damn it's hard to get good shots of these guys, they move so fast.

Just bought the 1Dmk4 and thought of selling my 30D. This lens made me keep it. If I buy the EF100mm macro, I may reconsider that decision, but for now I keep them both.

Wow I just love your work! Are these shots heavily cropped or just how far back were you from your model. I can't seem to get sharp ones like that from my lens. Then again I need to practice. Your well above my league! Any tips you can share about portrait shooting with this lens would be much appreciated. I will have to switch back to Mozilla to see the photo data. I am using Chrome and it sucks as it doesn't allow the user that info.

Thanks!!! I'm trying like the rest of us to get good at this.

Lighting...it's all about the lighting. Something of which I have tons to learn. This lens excells when you give it great lighting. In this case one strobe to the right of me and a 430EX Speedlight to the left. For the full body shot I stepped way back to get the shot. Lights stayed where they were and thus let the lens shine. :D

I keep practicing with just natural light and my 580 EX11 but I guess I have to pull open the wallet again and get a second source of light in the mix.

Brand new member of the 60L club.....ok, well its obviously not an L but I am as happy as if it were one.

Been doing a few shoots for some friends. Shooting their seniors. 3 to be exact. Of course I am no pro by any stretch so I was doing the shoots for experience. Well, they all got together and passed the hat and bought me a visa gift card.

I read for hours and had my lens choices narrowed down to three. The obvious 50 1.4, 85 1.8, and the 60 macro. When I found this thread I read every word for hours and hours and got up this morning and drove to the city (we live in a rural area a couple hours from Dallas) and bought the 60 macro. What a choice it was. Here is my first shot ever with it. Natural light. By the way, the model wasn't in a posing mood and near as happy about making the first shot count. But we pulled it off.

Thanks for everyones contributions to this thread. It made the difference when I was deciding what to buy.

I just got a 24-105L. The colors and IQ is incredible. But I want the 60mm for food and product. I don't want to have 5 lens. I think 4 is my limit. Those with this lens, hold my hand and help me make decision por favor... will I use the 60 2.8 enough?

I'll prolly sell the nifty. So I'll have:

12-24, 24-105, 60 2.8, 85 1.8

Or can I move the 85? Actually I do a lot of indoor sports.....

I sold my nifty fifty and replaced it with the 60mm because I felt like this is like a 2-in-1 lens. Its very similar in focal length to my nifty, and I would normally stop my nifty down to f2.8 anyways. With the 60mm, I don't hesitate to use it at wide open all the time.

And of course, it has the awesome ability to do macro shots. I use it to do food photography a lot too!

If I had your set up, I'll probably move the 85 1.8 and replace it with something longer? But that's just my 0.02

It will only make me want to take MORE and MORE pics.

I will say this. I had the 17-55 2.8 until recently getting the 24-105L. Now, with the 24-105 and the 60 2.8.... WAY more keepers.

The 60mm 2.8 is such an amazing portait lens. I haven't played around with the macro capibilities yet. But can't wait.

Just got my 60mm a couple of hours ago. For some reason I can't seem to get up close objects not to be blurry. I am using a T2i with a tripod. If you look at the first picture it looks OK. When I try to crop to have just the center then it's blurry. What am I doing wrong? Settings for 1st pic was f2.8 1/50 ISO1600, second pic f2.8 1/25 IS01600.

Why do you figure that you need the ISO so high?
Did you use MF or auto?
What setting did you have it on ie: Spot, Center weighted?
All these factor in to the whole setup.

pixel_junkie

The lower part of the photo is in focus. Change your settings to f/8 or f/10 even f/11 and bring down your ISO to 100 and try that, see what happens.

At very close focal distances, the depth of field becomes very shallow. That is why this macro lens can be shutdown all the way to f/32. If you are shooting on a tripod, and the subject is still, and you want wide depth of field; try really clamping down the aperture..

marilyn66
16th of June 2010 (Wed), 18:16
The reason I had a high ISO is because I took the pictures inside my house. The metering mode was Evaluative which is suppose to be an all around mode. Those pictures were taken AF. Again if I crop the flower so just the center shows the center is blurred.

Pixel- here is the picture taken at the settings you recommended.

exactly! I had the same problem with this lens and then started shooting flowers at f11 and f13. That finally gave me some decent depth of field. There were a few instances where I had to stop down even further.

At 2.8 with a true macro shot almost nothing will be in focus. Try all your shots again at f11 or f13.

marilyn66
17th of June 2010 (Thu), 12:02
Thanks nightcat that did help my pictures as long as I took them outside. If I tried taking the pictures on my porch they still came out blurry. Not sure if I am going to keep this lens or send it back.

I decided to try to photograph some other things. These still look like the pictures are blurry. The handle on the cup and right behind the alligator. These were taken in Auto mode.

You can't shoot macro in Auto mode - the camera will make all the wrong choices. As others have said, use an aperture of f11, f16 or more to get as much depth of field as possible, and enable only one focus point.

The "blurriness" you refer to is shallow depth of field. The camera and lens are doing what you're asking them to do. At f2.8 you have virtually no depth of field (DOF), so a lot of the image will be blurry. DOF will increase as you dial down the aperture (i.e. increase the aperture number).

I encourage you to give this lens a chance before getting rid of it. It's an amazing piece of equipment, not only for macro but for general photography too, and it would be a pity to let it go without understanding its true potential. Good luck!

hairy_moth
17th of June 2010 (Thu), 15:19
... and enable only one focus point.

I would take what ceegee said one step further and suggest manual focus when shooting macro. In fact the easiest and best way to do this is to use the back-button focus feature of your camera to get the focus close, and then the full time manual focus feature that works with this lens to get it just right.

It is all explained in this Canon link: Back-Button Auto Focus Explained (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=GetArticleAct&articleID=2286)

Your currently shooting in auto mode; shooting manually and using these kinds of features will certainly take your photography to a higher level. But, if this is all way more effort than you bargained for (e.g., you just want nice pictures without all the hassle) some of the P&S cameras (e.g., G11 (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-G11-Stabilized-articulating/dp/B002LITT56)) will give you really nice macro results in a fully automatic mode specifically setup for macro -- just set the shooting mode to the flower icon and shoot away. In fact, because of the smaller sensor and shorter focal length of the P&S cameras, they are really very well suited for macro work and are very easy to use.

All I can say about this lens is hat, this lens is by far sharper than all of your existing lenses. You can use it as a macro lens, and also for head+shoulder portraits. It delivers excellently sharp images.no regret!

Ok time to give this thread a push...
I got lucky yesterday and found this fella in front of my house... never knew these grasshoppers lay their eggs between concrete tiles...
The whole egg-laying thing took about 1 hour.. (thats not why my watch is next to it ;-), thats just for size reference ;-) )
I tried some different apertures also because i had great help of the sun (it so common and often necessary to use this lens at 2.8 ) i added the details underneath the pics.

It became kind of a series with a video at the end in 1080p wich i also took with the 60mm macro. I personally couldn't find anything with such detail on youtube, so i hope it will be a fine contribution.
