Drove by this nice spot last Sunday and parked my other hobby there for for a moment..
Not really a tiny object (in a world of car's it actually is) but this lens is so darn sharp that if i can set it up, i shoot my objects with my 60mm.

Dear friend,
60mm at f/2.8 with no IS, I wonder how much it might be capable of taking pictures in low light conditions, while hand-held..

That's because there isn't any. One can dislike the EF-S mount, the focal length or other specifications of this lens but in terms of pure optical quality, it's about as good as lenses get.
Of the lenses I've used so far, it's the only one which I would call "optically flawless", because everything else would be nitpicking.
But, to be fair, most other dedicated macro lenses are good performers as well.

Agreed. And I've used alot of L glass.
Despite owning a 5d2 I've kept my 60mm macro - that's how good it is.

I went out and bought one. Wowsers, what a sharp lens! Am having probs so far with close up shots (can't get a good focus), but for all other shots in good light it is excellent.

By the way, I'm still learning my way around this lens, does anyone know how to prevent the DOF from being so brutal?
Even when shooting something the size of a pea you can only have one part of it in focus. How do I get the whole thing in focus?
Normally of course I'd reduce the aperture to get greater DOF but indoors that just means a very slow shutter speed.
Is there no answer to this when shooting indoors other than getting a more powerful flash?

I have some practicing to do with mine. Not alot of focus depth! It sure is fun. I should have stopped down a little in most of my pics. Really sharp lens though. Here's a critter I got some photos of in Hawaii last week.

Nice capture!! I tried tonight to do one of those shots of the tree with a diy shape (used a star) for a cool idea that quickly went sour!!!
I got stars all right and that was it. Can't figure out what to try next/ As it is 1 in the morning I will have to try again tomorrow.
All the diy examples just show you how to make the cover for the lens and say nothing but shoot wide open. What other settings need I use. Guess it will be fun trying.

I used my 60mm to capture an old friend of mine. :)
The Rollei 35 is a 35mm miniature viewfinder camera built by Rollei. The original Rollei 35, when presented to the public at the photokina in 1966, was the smallest 135 film camera ever. Even at the present day the cameras of the Rollei 35 series remain the smallest ever built mechanically working 35 mm camera. --- credit: Wikipedia

Had a hard time deciding of all things between this and the 100L macro. With more light and little wider aperture I think it would be great. This is my first shot handheld natural light. Nothing special really, but from what i see I do not see any reason to spend $500 more.

Really love the shots in this thread, got me interesting in making this lens my next purchase - would love the 100L macro, but just bought the 10-22 and need to wait before spending that kind of $$ again.
I am wondering if there is room for this lens in a kit along side a 50mm prime? Reason I ask is, the non-macro shots look fantastic with te 60 macro, and I wonder if anybody (who owns the 60 and a 50 prime) takes non-macro shots with the 60 and still sees a use for the 50mm primes?

*wink*
I own them both ... the 60mm doesn't have "that look" of the 50mm. I don't know how to descibe it - maybe my english is not good enough :D I don't like to take portrait shots with the 60. The 50mm 1.4 is often called "dreamy" ... this is what I love. Maybe the 60 is too sharp? :-D
1.4 vs. 2.8 is also an important difference. Especially indoors at bad light. The high ISO capabilities of my 550d are great ... but 1.4 is still great to have :D

Just curious as Im about to drop $450 on this kick ass lens for my 7d, how do the pictures look hand held since there is no IS?? If its absolutely crucial to use a tripod EVERY SINGLE TIME the. Maybe I wont get this lens. I shoot mostly weddings and small children.

Really sharp! One word of warning though...in my personal experience, it performs best in good light hand held..by good light I mean daylight. It doesn't have to be really bright daylight..I got good shots hand-held in smoggy Hong Kong daylight.

Using the APS-C rule-of thumb:
Min hh Shutter Speed = 1/(focal length * 1.6)
This lens can be handheld at 1/100.. but I have handheld it with very good results at 1/60.
This one was handheld at 1/80 with flash (click for larger shot (http://www.flickr.com/photos/44350103@N05/5357755770/sizes/l/in/set-72157625629102989/))

I've just recently got my Canon 60mm macro lens and guess what it's super but the macro shots aren't as crazy as my kit lens reversed shots were (that makes no sense but you know what I mean).
So anyhow, i've jumped for taking refraction shots to tiny dew drops and I think it works ok until I get some extension tubes. What do you guys think?

Thanks, this is cooking oil (a few drops) in a glass bowl with water and a piece of red and green card underneath with a lamp shining onto it, simple really.(bowl about 2 feet above the card).
I will never part with the 60mm its a very good lens but at times the 100mm would come in handy for shots of skittish bugs but only for the extra working distance, the outcome IMO of the final picture is just the same. The 60mm is a true macro lens with an attitude and I love it.
