I would like to see how it handles some more3 portraits at f2.8 if possible, I am trying to decide on the Canon vs the Tamron to replace my 50mm f1.8.

Hi, bokeh not a problem, for portraits leave about a minimum of 5 foot between subject and background or backdrop. look at some reviews on this lens and sample shots of portraits, I think you will be surprised how good this lens is.
AF speed and focus lock is spot on, although I mainly use MF for macro but that's just my preference.
At the end of the day this is a fast f/2.8 60mm lens ;)
I'm not really into portrait work so please do some more research :)
From what I have seen this is a true macro that takes awesome head & shoulder portraits and I will never sell the one I have :D

Thank you for your help ;)

Although I don't have many chances to do portraits nowadays, I still like using my 60mm for tight head to head-shoulder shots when I get the chance.

I believe these are the pics shot with my 60mm. The detail in the pictures are simply stunning. I haven't tried the Tamron so i can't comment. Sorry.

Killer - thanks, but the flickr links aren't working for me.

Daniel - thanks, are those first two shots (blue eyes) wide open? I assume they are, the bokeh is quite nice. I noticed the 3rd shot (brown eyes) is at f8. The lens sure takes a nice detailed picture!

Thanks Killerclown and Daniel! I really appreciate your comments!

Yes the first two shots are wide open since we were in the shade and the day was really cloudy.

The last one (with the brown eyes) were at f/8 because I wanted to get more of her face in focus, and I was using strobe lights. It would've been difficult for me to sync the shutter speed at f/2.8 and not have it overexposed with the strobes.

When I do move to FF, I will be replacing this with the 100mm. The amount of detail it can capture never fails to amaze me.

I have never regretted buying this lens, It is one of the 3 I take with me when travelling.
Here is a pic I took with it in Malaysia - the plant is caladium.

What are the other two?

The 17-40mm and the nifty 55-250. I lashed out last year and purchased a 300mm L4 and have not yet got a decent pic from it - am thinking of selling it and saving up for the 2.8L.
The nifty 55-250 is a bloody good lens for the price:)

Thanks! I guiltily admit I've not spent a lot of time shooting with it. I was messing around in my garden trying macro shots, and the last setting was F4, so when I walked over, she looked up, i went "click", and that's how I got it. :o I've got some others at 2.8 and found those equally sharp, just happened to really like this one and figured it was about time I contributed to the sample thread.

When I shoot at 1:1 I find I need a tripod as any movement forward or backward changes the focus point, I'm unfortunately not that steady. I love this lens and as you note I use it more than my others.

Any tips for using this lens for macro? mine arrived in the mail, So far I struggle with focus, even at narrow apertures, I find that just a tiny bit of movement will mess the focus up!

I think I am fixing to buy one of these to compliment my incoming 17-40L....I figure this and a Sigma 30 1.4 will give me a great lineup of lenses....plus I am a sucker for macro shots. I vastly prefer it to shooting people. :)

Nice to see something more than insects and spiders with the 60mm. I toy with getting this lens, as I seem to have a hard time framing what I shoot with the 85mm.

So more general all around pics of the 60mm is my vote.

I never use a tripod for my macro's as i like the freedom i have handheld, makes life so much easier when chasing little critters, i pretty much always use flash and generally shoot at the flash sync and f8+ but im still very new to macro and many people will say im doing it wrong but it works for me and im happy with the results i get doing it this way.

These are Syrphid Hoverflies.

This was taken in my front lawn. These look like really small little bees that nobody runs from. The flower is a small clover flower not more than a quarter of an inch across. This was taken at the minimum focus distance. I did not realize there were two until I saw them in the view finder.

These pictures remind me a little of George in an episode of Sinefeld.

What would be the purpose of someone (with a crop sensor) buying any of the 50mm lenses when this would served two purposes: portrait and macro?

Of all the lenses I've researched, I don't think I've ever seen one get such consistently high reviews. I can't think of any other lens that surpasses this (in terms of five stars on every site).

Well the only point would be to take advantage of the larger apertures e.g. the 50mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4.
I have this lens but I've also considered getting the 50mm 1.4.

Exactly. with my previous 50 f/1.8, I was always a little disappointed with a little softness and blurryness when I shot anything lower than f/2.8. I would only use it for low light, but I found it not good enough for me to use.

with the 60mm Macro, it has the awesome macro capabilities and its sharp from 2.8 and on!

Does this lens extend at all when focusing? From what I can tell it does not, but I just wanted to confirm with someone who's actually used it.. If it does not, would you be able to use onboard flash, or an on-camera 430ex for light without causing barrel shadows at it's minimum working distance?

Does this lens extend at all when focusing? From what I can tell it does not, but I just wanted to confirm with someone who's actually used it.. If it does not, would you be able to use onboard flash, or an on-camera 430ex for light without causing barrel shadows at it's minimum working distance?

Yes you're right, its an internal focus lens so no extension when focusing and yes the on-board does reach down infront just fine although its best to diffuse the light, ive not invested in a dedicated flash yet so only use the on-board flash and i get results im pleased with.

Heres how i diffuse mine

Its actually a lid from a small bucket but i got the idea from someone using a party plate, i do get slightly blown highlights on shiny/slimy insects with this so a party plate might actually work better as they are solid white.

I had loaned my 70-200 to a friend the night I had a little time to play.. I knew what I wanted to do, the 60mm came through pretty well.

on a tripod 1/50 (to get the OOF highlights) f/2.8 ISO:160 2 off camera flashes used, one hard from camera right, the other bounced off of a white ceiling from camera left (you can see a shadow below the right side of the tree).

Based on some articles I have about how to judge the quality of the bokeh by looking at the out-of-focus highlights (shape, consistency..) This little lens does really well!

Hmmm... cunning.

Might give that a try.

Nice sharp lens. But I personally prefer a longer focal length so returned it. But heres a pic from just playing around with the lens.
