Has anyone used this lens? would like to see some photos and opinions.

I don't think anyone has ever used this lens. :p

Kidding, I have it and it's one of my favourites. A great focal length, since it's only very slightly tele (equiv of about 90mm), it's superb for so many applications - portraits, landscape, general purpose...oh yeah, and macro.

It's fast at 2.8, has really nice build, and EXTREMELY sharp! Perhaps my sharpest lens. Awesome size and weight too. I think the ONLY problem I have with it is that it's focussing is slightly on the slow side (fast for a macro, but macro lenses tend to be slightly slower for that extra accuracy. Or something). Oh, it has reaosonably bad light fall off at 2.8, but only when taking non-macro.

People who carp about EF-S lenses carp. People who use this lens recognize its optical performance is truly something special in Canon's lens lineup. This is my writeup:http://postit.rutgers.edu/uploads/Macro%5FWork%5FDistance1.pdf.
Here's a typical shot: http://aesop.rutgers.edu/~rabin/Plants_or_Fungi/Lily_Breeding/slides/LilyBreeding_DMerritt_52.htm

I am an old 1970s Olympus OM guy (great macro optics for those remembering the 90mm f/2) who became a Nikon guy in the autofocus 90s and appreciated Nikon's 60mm f/2.8 micro Nikkor for portability, who became a never look back Canon digital guy, and waited to Canon to make a 60mm macro.
They did. Just happens to be EF-S. This lens is so good, alone it made me keep an APS-C sensor body instead of moving to a 5D! It trounces the 60mm micro Nikkor and even the legendary Oly 90 f/2 in performance. It's that good.

I think the guys above said it all. It's an oustanding lens. I only rarely shoot macro with it and use it for general out and about photos.

It has a perfect, solid feel on my XT, and is very very sharp.

That's why I am having such a difficult time deciding whether I want to sell this lens to move to the 100mm macro. Its performance is absolutely mind blowing - and this little EF-S lens scares all the L's in my gear bag.

I like it so much I adapted it to fit the 1D 1.3X crop factor platform, although I did not succeed in moving it to full frame because the mirror is simply too big to clear the rear element.

Interesting observation: It DOES NOT vignette on a 1D. There is enough image area that completely black vignetting is absent, although there is minor light falloff at normal working distances wide open (although some have noted this is a concern at f/2.8 normal tele range on a 1.6X platform too)

Greetings,
This is the sharpest lens I had. I have to let it go very reluctantly as I upgrade to 5D. This is the parting shot. Enjoy...

Here is a flower shot with the 60 EFS macro. XT, F8, ISO 100, 1/40, crop, RAW, sharpened some. I shoot very little macro and there is probably camera shake in this photo as it's hard to steady the hands bending over and crouching. I should have upped the shutter speed. For the serious macro person with tripod and all that, it's capable of stunning results.

This lens is really very good indeed in all respects, including build. Ultra sharp, sharpest I've ever had, and capable of genuine 3D poppin' looking shots. AF is on the slow side and tends to hunt, but it is a Macro and they all seem to be the same. I use MF for Macro anyway.

I posted some fast and loose samples here: Click (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2284744&postcount=9)

My Favourite Lens.

FOV is around 96mm on the crops so it equals out to the 100mm macro on a FF. An effective 100mm FOV makes it a good portraiture lens (mainly what I use it for), the bokeh is smooth and creamy - a problem you may encounter when shooting in bright light is that when you stop down to f/5.6 - f/8.0 it becomes too sharp and people might complain about the texture of their skin - isn't that a great disadvantage ... too sharp

The AF is smooth and silent ... USM ... I haven't many lenses to compare the speed to so I can't really say. In low light I use it with my flash so that it focuses with the assist light.

The lens is very well built; I've dragged mine everywhere and have only have a couple of scratches. I recommend getting the hood with it, it’s very good, and protects the lens well (of course remove for macro) - also flare is very well controlled, even without the hood.

If you want a good macro lens (may be too short for some insects ... its more an object macro lens) that can double up for portraiture, tack sharp, well built, cheap, good bokeh, go for this one.

Here is my gallery - all the pics are with this lens:

Have a look here at some 100% crops with modest sharpening applied in PS (shot in RAW):

There's been a couple of times when I've thought of selling my 60 macro but then I look back on some of the images it produces and I quickly come to my senses. It's an amazing lens and probably one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used.

great lens no doubt, I bought it to pair to my 135L when shooting portraits in confined spaces (on 400d) - well, being great it is still not quite up to the 135L image quality - looking at 100% crops you notice the difference: at 200ISO the former produces more noise in the shadowed areas giving the image a lesser detailed look (more grainy) - this is my cautious verbalization of the lack of "magic" the 135L has and the ef-s60mm hasn't.
but if you consider the price difference it is all nonsense :) and you cant make a true macro with the 135L.

considering macro capabilities this lens is great for everything except fast and nervous insects - you must be too close to them to shoot at 60mm, so if it is the bugs you're after, consider something with a longer working distance (100,150,180 mm).

I second all of the above praise. Small, portable, insanely sharp little lens that takes great macros and portraits. I always carry it in my bag even on a long landscape photography trek.

Working distance is a problem at true 1:1 macro with timid flying insects but I have the Sigma 150 macro for that!

This seems to be an amazing lens, and while I have a macro on my list of future purchases, I will find it hard to decide between this lens and the 100mm - the extra working distance will be useful to me, but I will find a 100mm a bit too long to use as a portrait lens very easily.

A very good lens indeed. I just bought it few weeks ago over 50/1.4. Have been using it mainly for portrait and still learning macro. One thing I don't like is that it freaked me out by showing me all those dusts on my sensor, really lots of them! Always taking portrait wide opened that I never bother checking dust in the sensor, now I am in search of good sensor cleaning kits.

Ability to focus close is something that I like as well as compared to 50/1.4.

Here are some shots I took.

I looked long and hard at the 60 macro when deciding what macro lens to buy (also looked at the Sigma 105 EX Macro). In the end I went for the 100 Macro F/2.8. Fullframe wasn't even a consideration really, I'll buy for today and if I upgrade I'll sell tomorrow. The IQ of the 60 vs. 100 didn't come in to play either as they're both awesome. What sold me on the 100 was the extra working distance and the fact I could use it as a medium-tele prime w/ a fixed 2.8 aperture for portrait stuff. I already had a 50 so the 100 made sense.

That being said if the focal range works for you and you forsee yourself using a crop body for at least a little while then man go for it, awesome small/light/portable/sharp peice of kit! (just consider working distance).

great little lens, cheap too for the glass that you get! incredibly sharp - usm is slow as you would expect from a macro, but for macro work you dont really use it.
It teaches you a great deal about working with dof especially a 1:1 as someone else has pointed out, but hey thats all part of the fun. I havent yet tried extension tubes, but they are on my christmas list :)

It is really well built and feels good on the camera, top quality lens IMO.

Some very nice shots. IMO, i think when people post shots for review or comparrisons regarding a lenses sharpness, they should not be computer corrected in any way. Show what the lenses presents to the camera as we will see it. I think photographers rely far too much on computer correction these days, rather than take some time and capture the image as best you can. I don`t think lens comparrisons are fair when image software is used to make the shot look good. All your showing is what software can do to correct the lens, camera, or photographers short commings. Don`t get me wrong. Perhaps a little tweek in sharpness will do the trick sometimes, but i think we all can agree that many photos are way over "Tweeked" in many ways. Didn`t mean to get on the soap box. I enjoy this forum very much and have gatherd much information on many topics. Ken

I see waht you mean, but at the same time, with sharpening and post editing, it still shows a kind of real-world image, because that is how many photographers operate- it's just part of the task.

Anywya, the images I posted from my first reply are all unsharpened, unedited pics (the last one may have had some colour/contrast adjustment, but I can't remember). I don't use much post editing myself.

Lovely shots illy! How were the indoor ones lit?

Thanks :)

The portrait shots were shot with bounced flash as there was too little light which would have required me to shoot at ISO 1600. However some portraits in my gallery have fill flash - f/2.8 is quite usefull. The concert shots are all ISO 1600 - no flash.

AFing in lowlight is not very hard. As a general rule when I can't see something the 60mm can't focus on it - but if I can see it then the AF is reasonably fast. Ofcourse the flash helps alot of with the focus.

There's some truly fantastic images in this thread. The 60 seems to produce great colors, is sharp-sharp-sharp, and is a pretty versatile little lens. I'm actually considering simplifying my kit, selling my 100 macro and 50 1.8 and getting the 60mm Macro to replace the two of them.

Nearly all macro lenses are very sharp and an EF-S lens should be sharper than an equivalent EF lens because the optical engineers who design it can concentrate on a smaller image circle and not worry about corners that are not needed.

Well, I've always been skeptical about macro lenses. Mostly because people use true macro lenses for MACRO photography...obviously these pictures that people show when using a macro lens, are very close up pictures, and therefore very detailed to begin with. It's easy to mistake detail from being macro (so close up) for sharpness alot of the time.

Looks Stellar just like my Nikkor micro 55mm lens.... I actually prefer macro lens for their sharpness in comparison to using something like a 50mm prime for portraits. The brokeh you can get is incredible.

Actually most Canon, Tamron and Sigma macro lenses have been very good at all distances. The old Nikon 105 mm macro lens was weak at non-macro distances and was hard on the reputation of macro lenses in general.

Very eloquent tributes to the power of the 60.

Lots of folks prefer the 100 macro - but I see a certain magic in the 60 that makes it so hard to sell. I'm a hardcore zoom user, and there are only three primes that have captured my heart - and the 60 is one of them.

The "it doesn't work on full frame" argument is irrelevant. I dare to say this as a 5D owner, because I retain a 30D to shoot the 60 on.

For the exceptionally brave, the 60's EF-S mount can be re-engineered and shot on a 1D (1.3X crop) camera with amazing results and NO vignetting at macro ranges.

how on earth did you get an ef-s lens to work on a 5d? Isnt that supposed to be impossible? Doesnt the mirror get in the way or something? can you do this with all ef-s lenses? I'm intrigued!

Did any one ever compare this lens with EF100mm or EF85 f1.8?

I am curious and if possible any one want to try comparing this against the Tamron 17-50 f2.8?
I would like to see some nice portraits with those lenses.

Just found a NIB 60 EF-S for under $300 shipped from a guy that hadn't even used it. Only have had my 100 EF for about a week and a half, so now it looks like I will get to check them both out. Even outside of macro, expect these to be simply nice portrait primes on my 20D. Can't wait (and Kenko rings for 100 to boot coming in a couple of weeks from HK):-)

I tried the EF-S 60 and EF 100 Macros with my 400d and just couldn't justify the extra cost so I went for the 60.

Very happy - here's a couple of shots with the 60.

The 60mm macro is possibly one of the sharpest lenses I have EVER used! It is fantastic for portrait usage! Here is a shot I took a year ago...

http://home.comcast.net/~ntrhll/Agosto_12_2006_096_s.jpg

Now that is at like 20% resolution. To enhance the understanding of how sharp this lens is, here is a 100% crop of the upper left eye (in focus plane)!

http://home.comcast.net/~ntrhll/Agosto_12_2006_096_c1.jpg

If you look at the reflection, you can see me holding a rebel xt + battery grip. Here is an enhanced 200% crop to help.

http://home.comcast.net/~ntrhll/Agosto_12_2006_096_c2.jpg

Note there is a window on the right and a white wall (I was sitting on a bench, next to my fiance's house when I took it). The 60mm humbles any other lens (including the 135 f/2L, 50 f/1.4, and my old canon 50mm macro) I have used by a good margin!

Shortly after reviewing the photos and reading everyone's review, i placed my online order with B&H. I hope to receive this bad boy on Friday! I love the versatility of this lens more than anything else, which is definitely what sold me.

how on earth did you get an ef-s lens to work on a 5d? Isnt that supposed to be impossible? Doesnt the mirror get in the way or something? can you do this with all ef-s lenses? I'm intrigued!

You can use it on a 5D with a 12mm extension tube. Since it is a 60mm lens it still gives a pretty good range of focus (to bigger than 1:1) but does not focus to infinity of course.

Any way , the 40D is a good camera more realistic and practical than the Nikon D300 , the700 US price differential between these cameras for me is a big deal and I have collected many many Canon lenses already.

The most important thing : the bigger body of my new 40D balances very well with my 17-55IS and 70-300DO .

I also think the 40 D produces less noisy images at ISO1600 and up than my 400D , rebel XTI does.

Both are good cameras , though. Now, I am selling all my Olympus lenses and body since I concluded there is no bright future with the E sytem and the 40D is a much beter camera than the E510IS.

Since I have collected 5 EF-S lenses ; EF-S17-85IS, EF-S17-55IS, EF-S10-22, EF-S18-55, EF-S60 macro, and all of them are good lenses, I do not get interested in going to full frame world, and I think all EF-Slenses are better than their full frame counterparts.

I like the 1.6 crop factor since it makes all my lenses longer than they are on a full frame, and I think the edge to edge sharpness of EF-S lenses are much better than their full frame counterparts.

Comparing the EF17-40L against my 17-55Is and I think the 17-55IS has better edge resolution or corner sharpness.

So I would like to see Canon makes a dedicated EF-Stele zoom of the EF-S17-55IS or the 10-22 quality not like the EF-S55-250 quality.

By the way , the Nikon D40X is a toy camera , not even in the same league as my XTI is in, the camera focuses slow , and the 3 pts Af is primitive like the Af on my XT was.

So I think although on paper , the D300 is more appealing , the 40 D wins in real life use.

If you are a 30D user, I recommend you to upgrade , the 40D is very well designed and very well blanced camera.

Very fast , very low noise and now it's got a Nikon level of LCD that all pervious Canon models missed(the LCD on the D40X is much better than the LCD on the XTI for example).

I feel the dust reduction system of my 40D is more effective than that of my XTI, which is already good(I never cleaned my XTI's sensor while I cleaned my 30D sensor so many times).

The 60 is more useful than the 100 on a 40D or 400D since it is the 96mm macro for these 1.6 bodies, the 100 actually is 160mm macro.

Many say the 100 macro can be used on portrait, street photography and city scapes , but actually it is too long on a crop body, to be a good portrait lens and the 85 is not sharp enough for most of applications IMHO.

So , my point is when using the 60 macro on a crop body (it can only be used on a crop any way) , it is the 96mm macro with super fast AF , just like the 100 on a full frame.

I seldom use it for my macro stuffs or I seldom do macro work but use it as my walk around lens on my second body(XTI) , it is a great travel prime , very fast focusing as long as not using it in the macro range , and the color and contrast are just outstanding.

I usally put this lens on my XTI , my 17-55IS on my 40D and 12-24 on my Nikon , in this way , I do never need changing lenses .

Many still beleive that the 85 and 100f2 are sharp lens wide open (sharp when they were new in 93 for sure), but I never seen any really sharp image from them and I used both for a couple of months and eneded up selling them because they are boring and soft compared to my 60 or 100 macro , I also had the tamorn 90 macro but was mechanically very lousy , very slow AF-ing and extending itself out like a turtle, so sold it .

Purely optically speaking though, probably there is no better lens than the Sigma 70 macro , I also had 150EX before but their AF really suck so sold them.

Also , the Tamorn 90 is definitely sharper than any Canon lens I tried .....

With that said , I now prefer a compact fast AF-ing lens toa bit sharper but slow focusing lenses from third party.

Also, now zooms are so sharp as technology gets better , we no longer need many primes with lousy AF or strange color casts.

But if you are one of those people love to manual focus and love shooting ugly bugs or tiny part of flowers and do not mind carrying a tripod, then get the Sigma 150 or Tamorn 90 , but remember they are not able to AF as fast as this 60 and no real life use other than these insects or tiny flowers .

The bottm line, the 60 is the sharpest Canon multi-purpose lens , but there are many many sharper macro lenses from third party if you are bug shooters(or fanatic macro fans) and do not mind munually focusing them.

They both are capable of similar quality pictures, indeed. The main difference is that the Canon has IF and USM, which essentially means it always stays the same length when focusing, and it focuses a lot faster. The Tamron extends quite a lot when focusing, and focuses much slower for general photography. Focusing speed for static macro subjects is a bit of a moot point, of course, because focusing is generally of the manual variety in that case.

Furthermore, the Canon being 60 mm, it is a lot smaller and more compact, and it is more usable for general purpose shots. 90 mm is a little too long on an APS-C camera in this regard, if you ask me.

Kind regards, Wim

I bought the EF-S 60mm for product photography, attached picture says it all. It's pin sharp in focus with a nice DOF. I regret I didn't take this picture with a higher apperture just to see the difference, but it was just a testpicture. My lenscollection now consists of ths lens, the 17-85mm and the 70-300 f/4-5.6IS and I am completely content with this setup. For my biketrips I use the PowerShot S3 as I am afraid the 30D and the lenses wouldn't take all the shaking from biking - no I have not considered a back-pack as you can see from avitar that I ride a trike. My wife, photo and cycling are the passions of my life and there isn't room for more!:D

Fantastic shots Pasakun!

My favorite lens; I use it for landscape, portraits, "walk-around" and occasionally even macro.....

Yes they are crops from the original.

I only used built-in flash from the 30D, but I did use white box.

Thank you, but the word "Fantastic" really belongs to your photos. :)

Some fantastic shots here...

I am ignorant with macro pictures and I am thinking.. What is the difference in using this lence compared to my 24-70 F2.8L? I'll have F2.8@60mm with it and some great sharpness. So what will the differences be apart from maybe the minimum focal distance and probarbly some sharpness(?)?

That's it. But it's a big difference - the 60 macro will focus down to 1:1 magnification with excellent sharpness. Dunno about the 24-70, but most general purpose lenses won't get closer than 1:4 or so.

After contemplating getting the 100 macro for a while, I finally pulled the trigger on the 60 macro. And I am glad I did it, especially after reading this forum and seeing all wonderful photos in here.
It's on its way from Amazon; should get here in about a week.

Along with it, is coming 85 1.8 (from BuyDig), too..!! I can hardly wait..!! I am looking forward to years of pleasure with both of these lenses.

Goodness. I didn't think I'd be this sold on a lens since the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.

Is it excessive to have this lens, the EF 100mm f/2.8 USM and the MPE-65mm 1-5x USM?

Would this lens and the 100mm benefit from the MT-24EX twin light lighting system?

Is there a tripod collar that fits this as well? (I know that sound unnecessary but the tripod collar benefits recomposition greatly for me, no matter the focal length)

I always seem to have so many questions. ::sighs::

no its cheap and one of the best lenses you'll ever buy here in the uk its £235 and the 100 is £440 and the MP is £700 and is just as good as them

I doubt it. There's really no place on the lens to attach a collar - it's pretty short and most of the length is either the base (with AF switch and distance scale) or focusing ring.

I can't answer from personal experience. I have the 60 macro, that's all.

Have you checked out the Macro section of POTN? The guys there have tried everything...

Hi,

I want to buy this lense in a few days.
Could someone please post an image of the EF-S 60mm macro with mounted ET-67B lens hood ?

There are some other lens hoods for this lens in the shops from Marumi or Jenis. Are they equal to the Canon one ?

Thank you so much,
Bye, Robert

Ive had this lens for sometime but mainly used it as macro only, had used it for a couple of portraits. Anyway yesterday I left my 50 behind by accident so I pulled this lens out. The QE2 was in town and I wanted a shot. Im impressed with how versatile this little lens is

I"m about to buy the Canon EFS 60 2.8 Macro lens, and it appears that I'll be having my work cut out for me, meaning that from what I've seen of these magnificent macro shots here, that Macro is for me!.. .My camera is a Canon Rebel XT (350D),,

There's no mention in these great shots here if the camera is ever "handheld"....
I do understand that the use of a tripod is always best, but were any of these great shots taken "handheld?"....

beautiful shots!....amazing what can be done with the right lens....
I've been thinking of getting that lens since its great for Macro shots and the price
is also a consideration...were those shots handheld or was a tripod used?

I know from what I've read about Macro, that its best to use a tripod for those
very close ups, but I'm not a professional so I'll probably start out shooting Macro
without the tripod, and see what it looks like.

I do suspect I'll probably have to use a tripod in order to get better/steady shots...

I'm enclosing a shot I took with a new lens I just got from B&H in NYC.
I was sitting at the very rear of the theater at about 150 feet away from the stage.
The lens is a Sigma 18-200 3.5 OS. I had to zoom in to 134mm. ISO was 1600, shutter was 1/100, at f5.6.

I'm hoping that I can shoot some decent Macro with that lens....
