I have a question, in the instruction book of the 550ex flash it says you can adjust the output to both the Master and the slave flash, is this true when your slave is a 420ex? Just wondering because on the 420ex flash you can not set flash compensation like on the 550ex. Maybe while used as a slave it can be reduced?

Also cant find the shoe stand for my 420ex, do you know where you can get just the stand?

On the 550EX, do you have Ratio On or Off?

When I purchased my 420EX, the shoe stand was tucked into the narrow pocket on the inside of the black vinyl case. It is easy to overlook.

Yes. You set the raio on the 550EX and it takes care of controlling the 420EX slave.

Just remember to set the 420EX to channel B. I tried for the better part of a half hour to get the A:B ratio to work when I realized the 420EX was still set to group A.
