Very cool! I've been wanting to do a shoot with smoke. I'm interested in what you used to make the smoke and how you lit it. Share?

I just used incense sticks. Tried one to three at a time. I used a second slave 550ex flash that was triggered by my 580ex. It was positioned slightly behind the black background to the side and aimed at the smoke.

There may be other ways to do it but the way I did it was... I expanded the canvas in the direction I planned to flip the image. I then selected the image pressed Ctrl-J to make a new layer I then went to edit>transform> then select either flip horizontal or flip vertical. Then I used the move tool to drag the now flipped image to where i wanted it. Once you get close you can use the arrow keys to nudge the image perfectly into place.
Hope that makes sense. :D

I have been trying to do the same for a while now, using my 580EX and Sigma 500 Super in front of a flat black bg. My problem is the smell.. I love incense, but when I am quadruple lighting Nag Champa Super Hit, the scent is so overpowering that I start getting a headache. Any ideas on something that would create a lot of smoke and yet not smell to strong?
Great shots though, i like the use of mirroring the image.. it really adds a new dimension. The coloring of the smoke in your images has inspired me to slap some colored filters over my flashes to see how the smoke turns out.

Wondering if I'm reading too much into these. They're beautiful pictures..........but........ I see an animal on the top and bottom of the bottom picture. Almost like a monkey? Anyone else see that too? Or do I need meds..... ;)
