Wow, I'm amazed; those pictures are just astounding! Great detail and focus; your hands are far steadier then mine!

Thanks Alan:D :D... The green JS's I see so rarely that it is an absolute joy when I get the chance to shoot them.... This little guy kept jumping up on the lenses and I had to let him climb on my finger and then place it back down.... The little guy was so small it took looking all over the lenses to find him:D.....Thanks again... Glad you liked the shots....Alex

Hiya Alex,
Excellent series of shots, I'm with RM on those Lacewings eyes #6 is a real beauty those eyes look like metallic tea strainers, cool.
Cheers for now

Thanks Omri.... The spider is about 1mm maybe a tad smaller. It kept jumping on the lenses and I would have to hunt to find it then coax it on to my finger and put it back on the counter.. This is only the third one of these green guys I have seen.... They are so transparent it is tough to get enough contrast to see all of the detail clearly..... This is the closest I have come.....Thanks for looking and commenting..... Take care.....Alex

Hey Mark.... Thanks bro..... I am glad you like these.... The Lacewing was in sad enough shape that it allowed me to get up close and personal. He was still moving around a bit but just barely.... About 5 minutes after shooting it the Piss Ants swarmed and killed it and had themselves a lunch.......The End....;).....Alex

Thanks Adam....The green guys are tougher to spot as they are not only small but also nearly transparent...It is a treat when you do find them though ;)..... Good hunting mate.....Alex

WOW! These are great; what source of light did you use? Flash?

Alex Paul
28th of November 2006 (Tue), 22:46
Thanks Arthur....I use an MT-24EX, The twin flash heads are mounted to a Manfrotto macro flash bracket which is secured to the lens mount spun upside down ;). The bracket has two independent arms.. This allows the arms to be moved to position the heads where they need to be and offers more lighting flexibility than the standard MT flash head mount. I have a diffuser on each head cut from milk jugs and doubled up.. I typically have the flash exposure compensation set to +2/3 fStop range from f20 to f22 ISO 100 or 200 and shutter speed set to 250 to 400 based on background, ambient light, and contrast of the bugs.... Here is a shot of my stacked rev50 set up in the event you are interested as to what it actually looks like...

I am glad you like the shots and I hope it motivates you, (if you aren't already) to go for the really detailed macro shots.....Take care....Alex

Alex, that is one scary (in a good way) setup; it does a great job.
As for motivation to do macro – no problem here, I love it; some free time is what I need.
I’ve done some macros during summer; I’ll post few of them later this week.

Hi Dan.... I use two different configurations.... One is this one with 180L and Nikkor, manual f1.4 50. The other which is more versatile is a 70-200 f4 with the 50. I like the zoom for being able to vary mag on the spot, and it offers different VOF based on what focal length the main lens is set to which of course lets you compose the shot and include more of the bug when you need or want to..... I have tried a variety of set ups... The 180 stack is nice because if you want to quickly change from high mag to 1:1 you just quickly unscrew the 50 and you are still left with a good macro lens to work with......Take care.....Alex

Hey I'm new here and I love Macro Photograpy. I find your pic's to be great. Who cares about all the other stuff. That spider is so good. are you using the 60 mm 2.8 to get that close? or just the normal lens
