Wow Repoman... Don't approach the subject of photography so Black/White (Bad Pun Intended)... It, like life, if full of tones of Grey.
If it's something you enjoy for yourself, then yes, it's worth the time and money.
Learning photography is a process, and should be enjoyable one... Enjoy the Journey My man... For god's sake, have fun!;)

As for the images... The second image doesn't do much for me. But I really like the Lighthouse.

i would prefer a landscape shot on the lighthouse - the crop is just too tight. the second one has lens flare and is basically just a 'snapshot'

nice washed out tones on the black and white though, they go good with the lighthouse (normally i prefer more constrast) :p

This shot is much, much better... it tells a story.
As for the filter, if your into doing landscape photography, you should look into a GND filter setup for best results. (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=242746)
Also, any colored filter can be duplicated in Post Processing (PP) using the software that came w/ the camera, or Photoshop (PS). So save your money.
