I am thinking about purchasing a Canon 400mm 5.6 lens, and using it with a 1x4 converter. I would like the extra reach, as my current long lens is a 300 f4 (420 with converter)

I will be using it with..

Canon EOS 5
1X4 converter (pins taped over to retain AF)
400 asa film
Bean bag
Light conditions = bright

What would be the disadvantages of using this combination?

Would a cable release be of use?

Regards

Mike

I think that would be a good choice but you may want to consider the 100-400 mm L lense, and there is no need to tape over the pins, at least on the 1D and 1Ds. With the IS you can forget the beanbag and tripod.I think this is a more useful lense for wildlife than the 70-200 plus extender.

It will work just fine---I've done it. Just bear in mind that the resulting combination produces a lens that is effectively f/8. There are certainly ways to get around it, but your 300 mm f/4 with a 2X extender is going to give you something similar, albeit optically not as good. If you can get your hands on a 2X TC, it might be worth trying just to see if the relults are aceptable. If they are, you might save a few dollars.

Good luck,

Tom
