is this the best place to find out what people use for home/office printing? I use a Canon Pixma I4000 and am pretty happy with the results, but I just wonder if there is something better out there.

what do others use, and what's the largest print size you can handle?

I use one of the popular Epson Stylus Photo 1280 printers. It's a wide format printer capable of borderless prints up to 13" wide by however long your sheet/roll is.

The best thing you can do is to buy a CIS/CFS system - Continuous Ink/Flow System. Basically a set of ink bottles attached to the print head via flexible silicone tubing. Buying ink cartridges is a scam that basically every manufacturer expoits... Like the old business adage, "Give away the razor and sell the blades." Seemed like the carts ran out after a handful of prints and at $50 a pair I was tired of it!

The print quality is great and I've been pretty happy with it.

Having a variety of paper qualities and sizes makes any printer more versatile. I use mine for business cards, CD inserts and labels and address labels as well.

I've been eyeing the latest crop of PIXMA Pro printers though, in the 9xxx series. Some very nice features.

To be quite honest though, if you want really GOOD prints, you're better off sending your pictures out to say, mpix.com or whcc.com. Desktop inkjets are good for one-off prints or stuff for your own walls... But professionally or for bulk projects they're toys.

I have the Canon i6600 that I use primarily for photos. All in all it is a great printer, refills are reasonable, and the quality of output is outstanding. The one thing it doesn’t do is print banner format as it is limited to either 17 or 18 inches. If anyone knows how to get around this limitation I would love to hear about it.

For home/office printing, I have the HP2100 laser printer. It is fast, networkable so the whole house can print without the need of a host server.
