Canon Powershot G5 vs. Leica Digilux 1

I am probably the only one in here who is going back from digital SLR to a small compact digital camera. I was going to get G5 since my friend gave me her to play a little bit, and I liked it. 90% of images taken by G5 were comparable to shots taken by 20D/17-40mm L lens. However, I read some reviews about Leica Digilux 1, and it seems that Leica outperforms G5 even though Digilux 1 has only 4MP. Is there anyone in this forum that had a chance to try Leica Digilux 1?

um. i dont know anything about the leica, but is there some particular reason you are looking at the G5. the G6 is better in every way, or the Pro1

I'm guessing it's just because he used one and liked it. The G6 or Pro1 are definitely better so look at those instead.

I like the Leica point and shoot for the lens. The canon g7 is pretty sweet too, but too big for a point and shoot IMO.

I liked G5 since I tried it. G7 is too expensive. I do not want to spend too much money at the moment. I will go back to SLR in a year (almost done with my PhD in analytical chemistry and have some nice job offers), so I need nice camera that will allow me to use manual modes and that will produce nice images up to 8x10. I am bidding on eBay on a used Leica Digilux 1, and if I do not win it, I will go with Canon G5 or Pro 1.

I won on eBay Leica Digilux 1 for $400. I hope I will like it. After many years using Canon, I am trying another brand.
