Maybe I'm brain dead, but I just started a new group for 2004 pics and I can't find a way to have that group shown first on the main index page. I'm using 1.5beta5.

No you are not braindead (yet :)). You can set the exhibition order, but it is not possible to set the group order.
The only way I see is to delete all groups and make them again in the right order. Maybe this is on Pekka's todo list.
